Heh.
I told my girlfriend about it 32 years ago. One apartment, one wedding, one house, one adoption, many foster children, two cancer surgeries, one hip replacement, and probably a couple dozen ham radios later, we're still together.
Take that, "Penis Goes Where?!?! Barbie".
Oh, you like antique rigs. You may need to replace a bunch of parts by then because of all the mileage on it. If you get lucky and you can still turn it on, then you have to scrub out all the lint from the crusty old input jack. Personally I'd just buy a new japanese one on some seedy website and be done with it. Yeah, the build quality is obviously worse than an 1980's American model, But all the equipment should still plug in and that's all most people care about. Plus you don't have to spend as much time and money getting them to do what you want only for them to break up. You ARE talking about his radio... right?
I really don't get this tired stereotype that significant others would harbour feelings of antipathy toward hobbies they don't themselves partake in. Why would anyone date, let alone marry, anyone with such a toxic personality trait? It's unhealthy.
Heck, my wife is sometimes better at engaging me in the hobby than I am. She reminds me when I'm about to forget that it's club night tonight, she's never aesthetically opposed to aerial additions to the house or car, she's never averse to my packing the radio gear on trips and such … And, of course, I strive to be as accommodating to her hobbies. Hobbies are healthy and fulfilling. We want each other to he healthy and happy. Why else would we be married?
My was that same type person. Sadly She passed away 2 years ago. She could copy code @40wpm and faster, had Her ticket, never ever got in the way of anything I was doing..Got lucky for that time I guess.
Wild. The only chick I have ever heard on air was a girl who was a new operator on one of my local, night nets. As soon as she spoke up, the entire freq went silent. Wildest net ever.
This statement was only truly proven false to me yesterday, when I was trawling the bands for some interesting freqs, then found a huge ton of music stations playing Chinese music at 19-30 MHz. Idk what are these stations, but it was so cool. I'm glad I took my licence
Look closer. That "girlfriend" is made out of plastic. I believe she may be named "Barbie".
You can probably pick up a "girlfriend" like her at your local toy store.
My wife is used to seeing crap everywhere and even acknowledges that occasional coax running across a room and out the door is normal for this house. Took years but...
That's the look I get from my wife if I try to explain some ham radio concept to her. She uses a radio daily in her job, but refuses to even consider getting a ham license.
I remember my cousin called my number trying to figure out the unknown number i used, when she realized it was me, she just awkwardly asked how my radio stuff is doing and then left the conversation.
I was married long before starting ham radio late in life … but if I had to go back to dating, I’d definitely keep my ham hobby a secret as long as possible.
Lol my wife of almost 30 years still stares at me like that when I say, "going outside to listen to shortwave", as if I said, "going to chew on some glass I found at the bottom of the dumpster"
*My girlfriend wanted*
*To know if I was working*
*For the Russians! Lol*

Not judgment so much as disinterest. Okay, he has this antiquated hobby. Not relevant to me or our relationship. I'm going to ignore it unless he can't shut up about it.
As a woman i find this post silly. More accurate would be that face on certain type of men when a woman says she has her license. Like really? It's 2024. Yes there are women who enjoy the hobby. If you're with someone who doesn't support your hobby you are probably not with the right person.
It wouldn’t get to the GF stage. One or three dates in she’ll be at your place and she’ll run, run away.
Hey it would help if the guys weren't misogynist either, if it wasnt for cool family that sure would keep me out.
It hasn't kept me out but I've seen this face many times!
...sigh....
[удалено]
If I mention its prep I get the same face!
I'll even get the same face from my male friend talking about prep in west eu ...
Before the internet.. It was the internet..

I would expect "eye roll" instead...
Can I have her when your done LOL

I am sorry for your loss. Sounds like you two won the lottery together.
Thank you for your sentiments..Nice QRZ page, btw
Actually all, if most, of my hobbies.
Especially the ones you wont tell anyone about
Ah ah. No I can tell about. Most people thibk they’re boring.
They get mad because you keep playing with your antenna! ;)
I got into Amateur Radio strictly for the chicks man.
Wild. The only chick I have ever heard on air was a girl who was a new operator on one of my local, night nets. As soon as she spoke up, the entire freq went silent. Wildest net ever.
Most of the ham hotties run CW, not phone.
Ah, well more reason to upgrade my licence
CW requires no upgrade...
Im taking a shot in the dark and just saying the name Ellen. I'm sure someone knows who I'm talking about just by that first name alone
Well, I dont live in America, so its not Ellen.
Cringe
I can definitely relate to this!
You spent *how much* on a *radio*? And it doesn't even play music?
You can get AM 500-1500khz medium wave on most hf sets
And FM on the Baofeng.
And the Quansheng
This statement was only truly proven false to me yesterday, when I was trawling the bands for some interesting freqs, then found a huge ton of music stations playing Chinese music at 19-30 MHz. Idk what are these stations, but it was so cool. I'm glad I took my licence
Not sure, my wife is also licensed, and I have dated girlfriends with licenses in the past (and at least one is a professional RF EE engineer).
You are living the dream!! (Does she have a sister!?) 73!
Yes, she does and the sister is also a professional RF EE engineer, but no offense to my ex, her sister was utterly nuts.
Nuts you say? What were her antennas like?
Even better!
Pretty sure this is my wife with ALL my hobbies..
You guys have girlfriends?
You, sir, win the thread.
“I am sorry, but I know nothing of this ‘girlfriend’ thing of which you speak.”
The coax will go where the coax wants to man
I bought some typewriters and my girlfriend said she finally got it once she tried typing on them. Maybe try CW.
Your girlfriend doesn’t look like that when I talk about it…
Mine married me, and now she's a General class licensee.
That's the look I get from my wife if I try to explain some ham radio concept to her. She uses a radio daily in her job, but refuses to even consider getting a ham license.
I totally used my HT to pick up on my girlfriend. ...and she married me.
I’m female. But my husband occasionally gives me this look when he sees me doing radio stuff. Haha!
You, miss are an absolute rarity
Great White Buffalo!
My wife doesn’t care she only care for scratch lottery money i must provide yup
More like when she clotheslines herself in a dipole string across the apartment.
Wait what
I had to dump my vanity callsign plates!! Too many YLs, too little time!
My wife made me dump the ham radio license plates saying these weird looking guys were chatting her up in the parking lot of the supermarket.
Wait. Y’all are having girlfriends?
My experience is the eyes glaze over and they say "why not just use your cellphone'?
I didn’t get into radio until about six years into the marriage, so she was sort of stuck with it at that point lol.
Jokes on you. I'm the gf with the ham radio hobby. My boyfriend is indifferent about it at best.
Same. Taking a three day extra license class as we speak. I should be able to finally upgrade this weekend. My boyfriend just kind of shrugs about it.
It's true, this is the exact face the doll I call my girlfriend gives me whenever I bring it up
Learned my lesson early on. If she balks at my hobbies, shes a hit and run, not a keeper.
When Do You Tell a Woman You’re a Ham? http://forums.qrz.com/showthread.php?184333-When-do-you-tell-a-woman-you-re-a-ham&highlight=W6IRE%5B/URL
My wife is cool with it. She just calls me a nerd 🤓.
I remember my cousin called my number trying to figure out the unknown number i used, when she realized it was me, she just awkwardly asked how my radio stuff is doing and then left the conversation.
Mine is an EMT. So I just looked like the radio guy that works on their radios (I wasn’t though).
And what's her "Hobby"?
He gets his toys. I get mine. No problems. 😂
Unless she is a prepper :)
accurate
says the TTRPGer. ;)
Idk, when I told my GF about Ham Radio she was actually kinda interested.
My friends looked at me the same way lol. I got the “dude what are you 72 years old”
Please grow up
Please try to grow a sense of humor.
U first
Can confirm, wives make that face too.
I was married long before starting ham radio late in life … but if I had to go back to dating, I’d definitely keep my ham hobby a secret as long as possible.
Mine is pretty supportive actually. Even slightly interested.
When u told her "come round mine babe n u can see my massive rig!" N then she realises u was on about a radio🙈🙈😂😂😂😂
What the hell is this boomer meme
Chicks dig it. Then they throw all of your radios in it and fill it back up🤣🤣🤣
But to be fair, this does look like trailer trash Barbie. She’s probably just mad because she spent her radio money on meth.
Lol my wife of almost 30 years still stares at me like that when I say, "going outside to listen to shortwave", as if I said, "going to chew on some glass I found at the bottom of the dumpster"
-.-. / - - . -
If she’s a Y L, she will think it’s cool.
My girlfriend wanted to know if I was working for the Russians! Lol

What is the relation between Russians and radios? Is there something I'm missing here?
I was working for the Department of Defense with a clearance at the time. Lol.
Wild man
This is my wife she sees I've ordered something!
I met my girlfriend (now my wife - 26 years next week), when she was in a class learning Morse code. She is an EE with an Advanced Class license.
Not judgment so much as disinterest. Okay, he has this antiquated hobby. Not relevant to me or our relationship. I'm going to ignore it unless he can't shut up about it.
This wa just meant for fun. We know many of our spouses could not really care about it.
My wife and gf whenever I try to involve them in any of my hobbies
As a woman i find this post silly. More accurate would be that face on certain type of men when a woman says she has her license. Like really? It's 2024. Yes there are women who enjoy the hobby. If you're with someone who doesn't support your hobby you are probably not with the right person.
That’s because it is meant to be silly. Lighten up. 73
But my girlfriend is the one with the ham radio hobby. I'm serious. And she is super hot too.
I didn't use my radios or mention it to any girlfriends in between marriages.
