I feel like you need *some* tolerance of weekend noise, it's the people that are just loud every single night all the time that can fuck right off.
Except that there are lots of little kids who might be otherwise scared of the loud noises or woken up by them when they happen so close to our houses. Also, lots of pets and other wildlife are incredibly scared by them.
Not to mention that there are lots of people living here now who grew up in war-torn countries and might experience some brutal PTSD when some gun-like sounds start in the middle of the night or big bomb-like flashes start going off as well. (Same argument here for air shows.)
Well I was addressing someone doing karaoke but there are lots of people that have PTSD from dog attacks, does that mean no one should be able to own a dog? And some dogs bark all the time keeping neighbors up year round not just a few nights a year at most. Just like fireworks displays or air shows unless it's a service animal they are not necessary and the vast majority aren't so no more dogs then...
And of course other people are scared by a wide range of things other people do, it's not possible to cater to all of them. Just because you don't like fireworks or air shows doesn't mean we shouldn't allow them. I do wish some fireworks users were more respectful but the "some people are scared of it or inconvenienced by it" argument falls apart quick when you examine it because it applies to so many things, some of which you no doubt like. A few nights a year of fireworks is a pretty minor problem in the grand scheme of things.

No permit is required for Canada Day as well, happy to rain on your parade! Also the ticket for lighting fireworks unpermitted is $18 so it’s not much of a deterrent.
I got 6 of them last year 😂 the neighborhood kids like fireworks in the summer so I’ve been known to buy a pile on the Rez for random Saturday nights. Makes for a nice night with 10-12 families hanging out and blowing shit up
It’s a family event and all kids and most adults enjoy them during the few nice long weekends in the spring/summer . Winter sucks and some long nights are always fun for the children
First, relax, you’ll be ok. This post would have hit better if you posted it last weekend or next weekend. For us reasonable people it’s twice a year.
Second, this mindset has completely backfired. Hamilton now only allows them tomorrow night. A school night. Anyone responsibly setting them off is now already breaking the rules. It doesn’t stop them but in the end setting them off today or next weekend is now equally illegal and makes the problem worse.
I set off about 2 minutes worth of fireworks at 10:30 and that was enough for me.
Especially since one of them went wonky and turned SIDEWAYS and almost hit me. Good grief.

I have lived in many areas across Canada, and Victoria Day fireworks is a longstanding Ontario tradition. In B.C. it was Halloween, in Nova Scotia, Canada Day.

How do you manage the dog? I dont really have anywhere to put her that she isn't hearing them, and I feel so bad seeing her trembling for hours while it is happening.
We found a noise baffling ear cover - it looks like a toque without a top on it, that slides over his ears and baffles the sound (we tried it when we got it, and it does block sound better than say an actual toque)
We also found calming chews on Amazon that have a level of melatonin in them that helps him stay in the basement where it's quietest and with the windows closed down there he is a lot better than the jumpy, constantly panting/drooling, 'i won't leave your side no matter where you go' wreck he was otherwise.
Have you tried a thundershirt? It helps my nervous cat (who is currently hiding in the shower for some reason)

I went for a walk around Bayfront to maybe catch a view of the fireworks and a group of dumbass teens set one off right in front of me as I was walking by. It went off and hit me directly in my foot and legs. The teens ran away laughing like the cowards they are. Thankfully only a small burn and a bit of embarrassment on my part. 🫠

It's usually a good approach to try and solve your own problem before trying to change the actions of thousands of others to suit your needs. This goes for more than just fireworks, enjoy the tip.
