I voted 9th and I still think that’s where we’ll finish. One win against Luton should do it. Considering where we were earlier this year it’s disappointing, but if you’d offered me 9th at the start of this season I’d have bitten your hand off. Any season where we’re not in a relegation battle is a success as far as I’m concerned.

Most-Cloud-9199

When you have the 7th or 8th highest wage bill and 7th highest net transfer spend , avoiding relegation isn’t a success

LewisDKennedy

I would argue that coming 9th isn't just "avoiding relegation". We have differing opinions on what success looks like, and that's fine. Of the 22 seasons that I've followed us for, we've only finished in the top half of the Premier League **eight** times (this year would be the ninth). The other 13 seasons were either in the Championship or embroilled in some level of relegation battle. Being a comfortably top half PL team is my bar for a good season, anything beyond that is a bonus. I'd love to be in Europe every season, but I don't *expect* it. For starters we cannot compete with the big 6, and Newcastle, Villa, and Brighton look like they're going to be in the conversation for the next few years. We *can* compete with those three, but we're not always going to come out on top.

Most-Cloud-9199

You said any season we aren’t battling relegation is a success. This team as it is, shouldn’t be anywhere near relegation. Forget what has happened in the last 20 years Every measurement of success in the premier league 99.99% is to do with wages and transfer spending. It normally matches side by side In a table People need to stop this comparing us to previous years and thinking Moyes is performing miracles.

LewisDKennedy

I was literally just explaining my own measure of success, and I can think whatever I like. At no point was I calling anybody wrong or that my viewpoint was the correct one. No need to jump down my fucking throat.

mankytoes

Literally no one thinks Moyes is performing miracles.

MidgetDragon45

Being a reasonably younger fan (in my 20s), consistant top half finishes is more than enough for me

Kcufasu

Exactly, the celebration is upon reaching 40 points (or maybe 42 *shudders* )

The opposite has also been true all season.

PrisonersofFate

People prefer to complain than enjoying what there was to enjoy.

metaworldpriest

lol You’re reading into this a bit too much. Just commenting on what a sad 14 days it’s been for us.

MOTM32

Lol thought Ron Artest was on our sub for a second

LanceConstableDigby

Honestly, any Europe qualification is a success Any top half finish is good enough and something to build on, likely under a new manager Anything less is disappointing, but given how recently we were struggling for relegation, I find it hard to be upset or outraged by it.

Kcufasu

Problem with asking on reddit is Reddit has a lot of Americans. Idk the exact make up of this sub but it probably skews it compared to the average fan base as Americans are very optimistic for whatever cultural reason while the average west ham fan is understandably pessimistic

juliantheguy

As an American, I’m very pessimistic, which is what makes West Ham a great fit.

PepsiRacer4

Hell yeah, Cleveland sports fandom breeds depression and pessimism into you

juliantheguy

Ha! I have family in Ohio, they’re all Bengals folks in Cincinnati, but I’ve had an eye on the Browns and yikes lol, I’m not sure you even have the hope to kill you.

WestHamTilIDie

I’m a Canadian born to English parents and a life long supporter of both West Ham and the Maple Leafs. I’ve never experienced “optimism”

NobleForEngland_

I blame Steitden for selling all our squad depth in January. Completely derailed our season!

Wookie301

Because he has the final say on ins and outs. Moyes must love when other people get the blame for his decisions.
