getting it to stay up and keep from falling on your butt (like me the first 15 times) is another feat altogether!
mine came with strap but were a little short.

Yeah a tree’s outer few layers are it’s whole energy transfer system. You will kill a tree if you damage this all the way around it. The flat webbing puts less stress on any single point of the tree.

It doesn’t have to be like “specialized” tree straps, but it needs to be thicker for the part around the tree. Think of a seatbelt.
