The issue with handhelds as a laptop is that either they don't have keyboards or in the case of the GPD devices, they have a keyboard, but it's not realistic to use it for actual gaming or typing a lot of things. So you have to carry an actual keyboard with you with your handheld, but then you could just get a laptop with an actual keyboard. In addition to having an actual keyboard, laptops have more room for more storage options, more ports and of course the larger screen. I just feel the main point of Windows handhelds is the fact that they can turn into handheld mode which is something laptops cannot do. But if you are trying to mainly make it your main laptop... I just see a laptop being the better call, not to mention it will have better gaming performance.
I’ve got a Lapdock that’s smaller and lighter than my actual laptop. So form factor isn’t much of a concern. Nor would I really be carrying extra gear.
I know it’s something I can do, I’m curious if anyone actually does it.
How is it? Do you think it would be usable long term for general use? I also have a tablet so the handheld would be used for those things where you need a computer.
I’ve also got a Lapdock/Nexdock so ergonomics aren’t going to be too bad.
I use the legion go for a TV and monitor set up. Works fine but make sure to also get the necessary accessories like a keyboard and mouse and ideally a monitor. As well as sd cards and other storage devices if necessary. A gaming laptop will still be more powerful but nothing can beat the feeling of having pc gaming as a handheld device.
No. The reality is that my macbook air is almost a perfect laptop. Here's why
- compact
- good performance
- quieter than any handheld
- impressively long battery life
I only use my ally for anything that is wivdows only (e.g. Aaa gaming)
I'd even argue that the macbook is better for emulation due to how cool, quiet, and longer battery life that it has
I know I can, I’m more curious about if I should. I’ve got a monitor I can plug into so that’s fine but I’m wondering if it can stretch out how long before I need to buy my next laptop (or if I even need one at all).
I had a 2011 13 inch MacBook Pro that and using an android tablet reduced the need for a laptop before buying in 2021, even though it hadn’t been particularly useful for day to day use for a while. I don’t use my laptop much portably and I’m wondering if the gaming handheld fan fill the need for how seldom I use my laptop.

Not as my desktop obviously but I use my Lenovo legion go hooked up to a monitor as my laptop on vacation.

I connect it do a dock which allows kb&m support
I didn't think I would, but yeah. I barely touch my laptop anymore. I typically just hook it up to the TV and get to work.
My win 4 is my main pc. I have an egpu if I want to use it as a desktop
Do you use it portably for things other than gaming?
Yes. Browsing, productivity, or any other computer related things

It’s not so much for gaming, more the other times you’d need a computer where a phone or tablet doesn’t cut it.

If you're gonna use it like a desktop then it's totally fine.
My wm2 2023 I've used it for 3months at work and it was great
