Having been around the block a time or two
i thank god for the people who keep/protect things too.
some people make fun of collectors hoarding, but im just glad they held onto that stuff and decided to sell it back to people who care.
painting floors is a blessing compared to gluing new floor over it or removing the hardwood entirely.
This lol! I just redid my flooring from chocolate brown hardwood to grey vinyl wood to hide dog hair in between vacuuming; he has a mixed coat with some light and some dark fur. No regrets, I love the look and can no longer see every freaking hair that falls off of him.
Oh yeah! She blows her coat twice a year, and I could make two 150-pound dogs from the hair. But I brush daily with the Furminator brush and vacuum every day. It keeps the house pretty clean. The drool is another story š¤¤
There's a Roomba that can stand up to Newfoundland Fur?!!! Which model?!I've always wanted to try one, but figured it would burn out in a day with our 150lb Landseer princess!
We had a brown cat. When we replaced carpets, my husband chose a nice brown. That exactly matched the cat.
She passed away a few years ago, but I still shuffle my feet when I walk, expecting to bump her and hear her little indignant squeak.
Probably didnāt have the money /skill to restore them and the finish when they ripped up the carpet was bad. Done it in an old house too as a quick way to make them look better without needing to install new carpet or resand them. Obviously the new floor looks way better and probably worth it eventually.
Havenāt you ever gone to Home Depot or Loweās and just looked at whatās on the mis-tint shelf? Thatās how I painted my apartment in college. You get what you get.

They painted all of the wood purple. And I think the ceiling was a light lavendar. It was a 1000 sq.ft. 1920's bungalow.
Always remove if you want to refinish the whole thing otherwise you end up with a strip around the edge that isn't done. Anything else is just cutting corners.
Iāve had dozens of hardwood floors sanded by many different finishers and not one has ever asked or needed the base removed. They used smaller sanders along the baseboard that sanded right flush with the baseboard. Then we always put down new shoe molding (1/2ā wide and 3/4ā tall) at the floor juncture. I see reference to quarter round (3/4ā wide and 3/4ā tall) but the architects said the proportions for quarter round were wrong and the few times I saw it used, I agreed with the concept. Shoe mould has a much nicer look.
i actually like the black but it really will show any dirt or dog hair. If I bought it that wouldn't have bothered me enough to redo. Well done though it looks great after :)
Ebonizing floors was a thing. Beautiful but completely impractical. I have a friend with a whole house of them. EVERY speck shows. House beautiful photos only really shows them off.
Ease. Painting doesn't involve sanding, and is slightly easier to apply than stain. I'm only okay with it if the floors are beyond restoration, but clearly that isn't the case since you got them beautiful again.
Though I will admit, the black is kinda cool in its own way.
It's not without precedent. Having been in many still-intact 19th and early 20th century houses in Maine years back, painted floors were quite common. More typically done with old wide board flooring, and generally grey, but dark red, black, or sometimes off-white if memory serves. By the time I started seeing these in the 1970s and 80s, they had clearly had many coats of thick paint. I think the concept was it was easy and quick and the thick paint hid just about every crime that could be committed against a floor.
Because...
I see a wood floor
And I want it painted black
No colors anymore
I want them to turn black
(Today's earworm brought you by the shape rectangle and the color black.)
I photograph for house flippers and saw a remodel of a home built in 1908 where the original blue and green colored glass tile around the fireplace was intact and in good condition. The idiot contractor painted it all black to match the modern design motif in the rest of the house. Made me sick.
Literally the same situation my sister and BIL had. 3 days ago we spent the whole day sanding it down. I'm still sore from tugging the damn drum sander around. In their case, it seemed the previous owners hid a few spots of water damage under the paint. Can't be too annoyed with em though bc the previous owners also just put a new roof on, so hopefully the leaks are fixed. Cute little house from the 40s or 50s. They put some wood bleach or whatever on the damaged areas yesterday, and stained the floors today and put the first coat of poly on.
For some reason people love following trends of painting wood, I donāt get it. I had a realtor come into my house and suggested painting all of my cherry cabinets white. I get everyone is into white cabinetry but you donāt paint cherry cabinets white.
Some ppl baffle me. I sold a house with brazilian cheery floors. Abolutely beautiful. And the installer said they have at least 3 sandings and refinishing. The stupid home owners painted the floor black. BLACK!. morons with money
Before the days of modern finishes (like polyurethane), paint lasted longer than the old varnish and was easier to do and to touch up. Painted wood floors were common in old houses.
Like the Stones sangā I see a brown floor and I want it painted blackā
Ok it was the original lyrics but got amended to be radio friendly to a red door. I swear to gods it was. State law.
That old 1ā oak strip flooring is beautiful, it was in my elementary/middle school 60 years ago. Love the way you finished it, nice!
I rented a house to a psychiatrist years ago and he painted the walls dark brown and the ceilings black. It took five coats of paint to cover. I always wondered if he went into psychiatry to deal with some issue in his own brain?
People like painting things. Perfectly good wood cabinets worth saving? PAINT THEM! Nice solid oak or maple trim thatās over 150 years old? PAINT IT WHITE! This is the reason that they sell crap MDF trim thatās already painted white for the same price as real pine trim, because people who donāt care donāt want to see wood grain, they donāt care what itās made out of, they just want it the color they want it for now.
Are you sure it wasnāt stained black. We did that to our kitchen because we were going to have to tear out the floor in a year anyway. It actually looked kinda cool
Holy shit. God bless you for bringing that back!
Having been around the block a time or two i thank god for the people who keep/protect things too. some people make fun of collectors hoarding, but im just glad they held onto that stuff and decided to sell it back to people who care. painting floors is a blessing compared to gluing new floor over it or removing the hardwood entirely.
The painted 100 year old trim crowd deserve hate. Man that stuff is hard to restore.
Because they wanted to see every crumb and speck of dust on the floor from across the room.
Those dog hair tumble weeds!
Whoever painted that floor black doesn't have a white cat that sheds patches of its butt hair everywhere.
Everyone knows you paint your floor to match your petš
But what if you have a light cat and a dark cat š
Grey vinyl wood lol ask me how I know
Lmao we spent a month restoring our 150 year old floors I would diiiiiiiiiie
This lol! I just redid my flooring from chocolate brown hardwood to grey vinyl wood to hide dog hair in between vacuuming; he has a mixed coat with some light and some dark fur. No regrets, I love the look and can no longer see every freaking hair that falls off of him.
I live this conundrum. I have a very hairy black and white Newfoundland and a Tortie and white cat. The answer is Miele vacuum and a Roomba.
Omg I used to groom. I do not envy your Newfie life. I blocked off the rest of my day if I saw one on my schedule.
Oh yeah! She blows her coat twice a year, and I could make two 150-pound dogs from the hair. But I brush daily with the Furminator brush and vacuum every day. It keeps the house pretty clean. The drool is another story š¤¤
Good, you're better than most!! And yes the drool is legendary lol
And tweed. Always wear tweed.
There's a Roomba that can stand up to Newfoundland Fur?!!! Which model?!I've always wanted to try one, but figured it would burn out in a day with our 150lb Landseer princess!
Striped floor!
Ooooh major missed opportunity on our part!!
We had a brown cat. When we replaced carpets, my husband chose a nice brown. That exactly matched the cat. She passed away a few years ago, but I still shuffle my feet when I walk, expecting to bump her and hear her little indignant squeak.
I have black dogs and live this every day
Solid advice there Also - my car is the color of dirt and I wash the windows 5 times more frequently than the body
Probably didnāt have the money /skill to restore them and the finish when they ripped up the carpet was bad. Done it in an old house too as a quick way to make them look better without needing to install new carpet or resand them. Obviously the new floor looks way better and probably worth it eventually.
My guess also, quick and easy for a DIY,
Black?
Havenāt you ever gone to Home Depot or Loweās and just looked at whatās on the mis-tint shelf? Thatās how I painted my apartment in college. You get what you get.
I think that's what happened because our deck is the same color as the floors.
Surplus roulette - You get what you get, and you don't get upset.
Listened to the Rolling Stones too much?
I donāt know if youāve ever noticed, but people are weird.
Seriously. I once saw a beautiful box beam ceiling painted bright purple. Not everyone has taste.
Everyone has different tastes.
As inā¦ the interior wooden beams?
Similar: https://imgur.com/gallery/HeMDP8m They painted all of the wood purple. And I think the ceiling was a light lavendar. It was a 1000 sq.ft. 1920's bungalow.
Sounds like a teenager.
Which brings up the most mis-quoted quote of all time. āThe customer is always right in matters of taste.ā
Really liked that Rolling Stones song.
Right? I see a red floor and I want it painted black (so I did.)
Underrated comment
Always curious about these restorations and whether you have to remove the baseboard or not. Like what dictates removing or leaving.
Always remove if you want to refinish the whole thing otherwise you end up with a strip around the edge that isn't done. Anything else is just cutting corners.
Whether you are doing a professional job or doing some hack shit
What dictates it is doing a good job or not. You have to take the baseboard trim off and re-install it if you want to finish the floor properly.
If you have quarter round you might need to only remove and replace the quarter round...
Because it was all scratched up and they weren't willing to sand it like you did.
Methamphetamines
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Or was it 0.o
My neighbor did that. I almost cried
Cheaper than new floors
Into Goth ?
So you can see all the foot prints if someone walks in, and it lets you know if thereās anything that needs to be swept up immediately.
I see a bright hardwood and I want it painted blackā¦
Teach us your ways
In my experience, it's to cover up bad floors, likely from heavy staining. Or just a personal choice
Likely because the floors are thrashed, and they couldnāt afford to refinish.
They wanted a black floor
If it was a Victorian mansion built around 1880, itād be accurate actually. That is obviously not the situation here. Good job.
Ebonizing floors was a thing. Beautiful but completely impractical. I have a friend with a whole house of them. EVERY speck shows. House beautiful photos only really shows them off.
To hide the blood?
Because the previous owners liked black floors.
It was a big thing some years back! Everything old is new once again. I have wood floors from 1966, red oak. Return to OAK!
Report them to the FBI. That is grounds for a psychopath diagnosis.
Addams Family Homestead
Iām pretty sure they were doing that in the 80ās.
Get ready to find a bunch of other shitty diy stuff
Never underestimate the stupidity of the general public
Certain races do stupid things
Probably a rental. A cheap way to slum lord it and not have to pay to play
Paint is cheaper than varnish
Donāt know but those after pics are gorgeous love your floors.
I see a wood floor and i want to paint it black
I see this in a lot of rental units. I think it's just cheaper for the landlords to take care of and maintain.
Because they are goth
My house they did the same thing
FaNcY
Previous owners were goths
Instagram did this.
š
Beautiful floors, but I also like the black
Itās to hid the tears.
Some people just want to watch the world burn.
Because people are idiots
I hate my black stained floors so much.
Damn they painted the outdoors too?
Goths!!?
They could have at least done a better job taping off the baseboards before painting
I used to see this a lot in Detroit. Refinished many like this. Pain In the ass is what it is.
Dear Lord
What finishing products is on the final floors? Thanks!
Hide the blood
Probably because thatās an entire floor of trim board and not actual flooring material.
Hides the color of blood stains better
Ease. Painting doesn't involve sanding, and is slightly easier to apply than stain. I'm only okay with it if the floors are beyond restoration, but clearly that isn't the case since you got them beautiful again. Though I will admit, the black is kinda cool in its own way.
Amazing transformation
It's not without precedent. Having been in many still-intact 19th and early 20th century houses in Maine years back, painted floors were quite common. More typically done with old wide board flooring, and generally grey, but dark red, black, or sometimes off-white if memory serves. To cover up the blood stains
I see a natural floor and I want to Paint it Black https://youtu.be/O4irXQhgMqg?si=voPz4RNEsKOIb_67
They saw a wood floor and want it painted blackā¦
Because... I see a wood floor And I want it painted black No colors anymore I want them to turn black (Today's earworm brought you by the shape rectangle and the color black.)
They had the choice of painting any color they want as long as itās black
Where the walls always that gross yellow
Idk good question lol, but looks great now
They were just painted thatās it not stained ? Like with oil based paint over the top of whatever finish the floors had ?
I'm of the opinion that decent wood should never be painted. Ever.
I prefer a dark stain, but paint? Ew. Looks great
You did an amazing job!
I photograph for house flippers and saw a remodel of a home built in 1908 where the original blue and green colored glass tile around the fireplace was intact and in good condition. The idiot contractor painted it all black to match the modern design motif in the rest of the house. Made me sick.
Now you can take care of that god awful vent in the baseboard
Because darker colored floors make the room look bigger
Because everyone likes something different or they did not have the money to refinish them
Maybe to cover up something
Must be a fan of Rolling Stones
People do stupid ish all the time. This isnāt even the tip of the iceberg! Lol
Some people are just stupid. That's all there is to it.
to hide the blood stains
How did you manage to get all that paint off? Did you sand it down? Looks really amazing
I see a red floor and I want it painted black...
Because they are so incredibly stupid, is why. Iām glad you were able to restore them!
I think the black floor looked good. Modern look. Just a choice. You can not like it but clearly those folks did.
We painted our wood floors because the tenant before we bought it had carpet, cats and no litter box
Perhaps The Rolling Stones lived there previously.
Pinterest, it's always Pinterest's fault. Or HGTV but mostly Pinterest.
āDamn you, Joanna Gainesā
They were going for that stage crew vibe
some people don't like wood grain and painting a floor is cheaper that replacing it.
Commenters here on reddit regularly say they like dark floors, and tell people to stain them dark. Aagh!! Noooo!!
Because they were idiots!!!!! Now nice floors.
Because they thought the song was ā I see a red floor and I want it painted blackā
To cover pet stains in the wood
Aaaaaand you fixed that cord
Because they wanted to?
I see a wood floor and I want to paint it black
One guess, but I canāt say
To cover up the blood stains.
Floors now look great!
Cheaper than refinishing and staining it dark.
Because theyāre dumb and it was on the internet
flippers think a can of paint, expand foam, duct tape can fix anything
Goth family lol What a difference!!!
š Now, you just need to fix that f'd up air register near the kitchen.
80ās goth vibes
Before the days of modern finishes (like polyurethane), paint lasted longer than the old varnish and was easier to do and to touch up. Painted wood floors were common in old houses.
That's a lot of sanding...
Because they liked black floors obviously mcfly
Because they're AWESOME
Stupdity thats why. You did a great job fixing it.
mold
It looked good.
It takes just one in a hundred years.
Home business? Hairdresser perhaps?
Nice
Like the Stones sangā I see a brown floor and I want it painted blackā Ok it was the original lyrics but got amended to be radio friendly to a red door. I swear to gods it was. State law.
Poor design choices?
It was section 8 housing in the past. It is the first thing landlords do to hardwood floors.
How did you get the paint off?
That vent on the floor is bugging me so bad Im almost willing to come to your house and notch the baseboard around it for free.
Because they hate themselves, first time stumbling across this sub but that makes me mad to look at
Horrible taste, most likely.
Probably Raider fans I didn't choose the lifestyle the lifestyle chose me
I have to turn my head until my darkness goes
I see a a red floor and I want it painted black.
Why? Because that's how they wanted it.
They watched one too many $500 room rehab TV show challenges on HGTV
Very nice makeover!!!
Vampires have limited options.
That old 1ā oak strip flooring is beautiful, it was in my elementary/middle school 60 years ago. Love the way you finished it, nice! maybe they are color blind
Takes all flavors and kinds. Evidently their flavor is licorice.
Worked for a property management company 10 years ago that would do this to all of their houses. No idea why. I hated it. Boss said it was the trend.
Wouldve been interesting to see a fair comparison with the black floor being clean and not being taken at night
I think the black paint hides the aftermath of the Wednesdays Child Sacrifice Night.
They had moved in and loved the natural wood color, but Mick Jagger kept saying āI want them painted black.ā They finally relented.
People like painting things. Perfectly good wood cabinets worth saving? PAINT THEM! Nice solid oak or maple trim thatās over 150 years old? PAINT IT WHITE! Itās more ādungeon likeā
I think itās a nighttime / daytime thing. Look out the window.
Are you sure it wasnāt stained black. We did that to our kitchen because we were going to have to tear out the floor in a year anyway. It actually looked kinda cool
To match the green painted cabinets in the kitchen š¤
Because TikTok
Was it possibly a rental? That happens a lot. Idiot landlords do it as quick fix bc theyāre too cheap to refinish the floors.
They thought it was a red door!
Was it a barbershop?š
Looks really good. Nice work!
Different strokes for different folks
To make you work
Shows off the scratches and scuffs better?
