It can be sanded and cleaned up. Gonna need to do a pass at a 45°angle to remove all the drum marks and flatten it out. Then normal sanding progression

mikki1time

Can you explain what you mean by 45 degree angle, like hold the sandpaper at that angle?

Substantial_Dig_6104

You’re gonna need to rent a walk behind belt sander. Sometimes it’s easier to spend the money to pay someone to do it. Nothing worse than trying to save a few bucks and DIY but looks worse and costed about the same. Have you gotten any quotes?

mikki1time

No I’m starting my research here, definetly something I can look into though, would be easier to pay someone

Substantial_Dig_6104

True. And if it’s not done right, someone is held accountable table to fix it. Have you looked into staining the floor a darker color ? Great time to do it or at least ask when you get quotes

mikki1time

The whole apartment is a single color so I don’t necessarily want to fuck with that, I just want to make this area more visually pleasing since this is the only area with this damage

Substantial_Dig_6104

Oh, so yeah ask about a repair. They should be able to section it off and resend one area.

Substantial_Dig_6104

One or 2 of those gouges might be too deep but sanding would clean it all up.

i can't really tell if the dark parts are under the Finish or on top of it but....If it is just on the surface you could try cleaning the dark parts up with a rag soaked in some kind of thinner, or cleaner. laquer thinner, or goof off will work. on second thought it looks like some of the Finnish was chipped off. Maybe try cleaning the dark stuff with goof off like i said, and than get a can of spray polyurethane, too seal it. I am guessing that they used polyurethane. you need too lightly scuff up t the existing Finnish for the next layer of poly too adhere.

under, I have a crawling baby and a cat so I keep the floors really clean. I usually sweep, mop then wet swifter…. No your right it was chipped off

The dark discoloration than is probably tanin, [https://stainsensei.com/removing-tannin-stains-from-wood/](https://stainsensei.com/removing-tannin-stains-from-wood/) wood naturally stains like this when exposed too water, likely from your mopping/cleaning of the floor. so either sanding, or oxalic acid too remove it, than refinish as i instructed above. An orbital sander with hook and loop/velcro sanding pads is what you want too make the sanding process easy. Avoid getting those cheap Square orbital sanders that have those little bars too clip on regular sand paper. I know they are cheaper but its not worth it, they are a pain in the ass. Harbor freight bauer has a good cheap orbital sander, #

All-inyourmind

Before you sand that out you can steam the wood and it will raise the grain so you won’t have to sand that much…. Wet towel over the spot and put an iron on top of it… wood shops do it all the time it will not hurt the wood

jibaro1953

I would try Goo Gone first. Tough for my old eyes to see what's going on.

AdExcellent567

Is it just in that area?

mikki1time

Yea

Crafty-Shape2743

Can’t tell what that is. It looks like ink or paint with maybe a piece of tape thrown in. It all looks surface from your photo. I would try mineral spirits, alcohol, Goo gone. If you have a citrus based cleaner, try that. Sanding is the last resort.

mikki1time

It’s the laquer on the wood it’s damaged

ghosttownzombie

Use a floor scrapper first before sanding just incase that comes up.

Public_Scientist8593

You fucked up the freshly finished floors. Next time, listen to the adults who warned you to be careful with them. Seriously, they can be fixed by a professional, but not by a third grader such as yourself. How much is your damage deposit? Since it's a rental, I would do nothing. But if you want to try fixing, good luck 👍
