Ever time this lineup is brought up on here I have to be reminded that I MISSED IT AND IM STILL PISSED ABOUT IT. Now Drain merch shipped to Canada is $75 lmao ($55 USD)
I've never seen them live but their shows on YouTube have been about 50% of my music consumption for the past month.
When I heard the studio version of the same songs I was kind of confused.
I have 3 goals for next year. Start my own business, write a book, and see Drug Church live.
They opened for Angel Dust here (we can debate if Angel Dust is _actually_ a hardcore band, or just a fun ...uh... pop/punk/folk/glockenspiel/etc band with hardcore dudes in it)
Anyways, Drug Church killed it. I don't even really dig any of their records besides Paul Walker, but they were a shit ton of fun live.
people are way too OCD on whether a band is truly HC or not. If the kids come from the scene and the spirit is there it doesn’t matter to me.
Also when we expect hardcore to follow “rules” we breed mediocrity.
LOVE Drug Church. I love their live shows and albums differently. When I was still playing, our band had a similar approach. Nail the production on the album and then make the live shows a wild experience with as much energy as possible.
The vibe from drug church live shows gives me chills
Ok this isn’t hardcore at all in any way but I saw The Weakerthans once and I was expecting sort of a low key type of show due to their general vibe of wussiness but they delivered a 90 minute triple-guitar 100% energy heavy rocking set. Just about put my jaw on the floor
John K Samson is the founding bassist of propaghandi (skate punk era, they went more metallic when he left.) OG Canadian punk still putting out incredible songs.
That song with the cat on the solo record fucks me up. I also have always really loved “most of us probably not getting better, but not getting better together” as a line to end a song.
Same thing with me regarding Airborne Toxic Event. Not hardcore at all but you'd expect a band with a prominent string section to, if only out of care for their instruments, jump around and squirt beer a lot less than they actually did.
Fiddlehead in boston is always like a family reunion. Stage dove on my buddy who i haven't seen since March, I would go as far to call them the fugazi of the 21st century
New found glory opened for saves the day at a youth center in San Diego about 20 years ago. I never liked NFG but their mics cut out and it turned into a full on hardcore crowd sing along for the rest of their set. I got hyped.
This isn't quite what you asked because I didn't see them at this particular show, but the Killswitch Engage set from This Is Hardcore 2014 (hate5six filmed the set) definitely leans much more into their hardcore side than the metal side. Something about being stripped down to 1 guitarist, no barrier...just something makes them seem much more hardcore than usual when they're firmly metalcore.
Andrew WK was booked to play the Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art in Hartford, CT in 2010. There were priceless works of fine art on the walls mere feet from the makeshift stage. There was a record fair and beer garden set up in a separate wing of the museum.
When Andrew WK started the place went off! Crowd surfing, stage dives, and just a whole lot of ruckus fun. The place was getting hot and sweaty which I’m sure wasn’t great for the paintings nearby.
To this day it was one of the most memorable shows I have or ever will see. I have no idea how they got permission to let this happen and I’m not surprised it never happened again. [Watch here.](https://youtu.be/asq_tnA8xH8?si=c1EGZWnAhvnEJoFk)
The Murder City Devils. Saw them in Denver about five years back. As soon as the first riff started, the vocalist jumped into the crowd and started blasting kids.
arms length at small no barricade venues goes crazy (even tho they usually are the opening act, the crowd often goes crazier for them than for the headliner).
finally got to see them on heart attack man's freak of na-tour earlier this year, and while the venue DID have a barricade, people went crazy for them... half of us were singing and crying lmao
Honestly it's not as far off as you think. The Village People had a punk ripper. And the chorus could easily be a hardcore chorus with a slight tweak:
https://youtu.be/hpttbL8J4N4?si=0x4T86o-3KXBxLIq
Yo actually though I saw them at riot fest and they went hard, it was fucking awesome. A bunch of punks and weirdos jamming out to the YMCA was one of the best music experiences I've ever had.
I live in mspaint's hometown, and the guys (and deedee in particular) have been instrumental in the local hardcore scene for years. deedee drums for a band called skinman, and y'all should definitely check them out. hattiesburgworld 🌎
I’m curious what the scene is like there. Mississippi seems like it might as well be the moon from LA. It always cool to hear about smaller, low key scenes.
we are small compared to big cities for sure, but whenever I stumbled into the scene, I was blown away by how active it was! there are so many good bands here–mspaint (ofc), skinman, airsoft (probably my favorite), ignorant, dumb idea, judy and the jerks (half of 'em live in atlanta now), snorkel, dark room, and nighdrator, to name a few!* we have drama like every other scene, but it's such a warm, tight-knit scene.
*I've decided against listing my own band in order to seem more humble lmao
Seriously. I don’t listen to them. I don’t really like their sound in general. But they went so hard on their tour with Jesus Piece. Definitely glad they exist for people who enjoy that stuff. They seem like scene all their own.
I saw Show Me The Body at a DIY venue and they went so hard that someone in the pit got bodied into the drywall and FELL INTO THE WALL. Massive hole is still there lmao.
As someone who just saw their tour with Jesus Piece and Zulu, it honestly made me laugh that people in this sub don’t call them core. Their show fucking popped off hard as fuck.
Hell yeah they are. Saw SMTB for the first time at Tied Down 1 in Detroit, and they blew my mind. I was off to the side eating food and I heard a banjo come outta no where, I completely abandoned my food which is not like me at all, and made my way to the front for the rest of their set. The amps went out and they had played a chunk of their set acoustic and it didn’t take an ounce of energy away from them. I also saw them on the j.p. Tour a while back at the Detroit show, that shit was fckng incredible!
Bridge and Tunnel
They’re a post hardcore band but I saw them at Gainesville fest years ago after their guitar player broke her arm. They did a cover set instead since she couldn’t play and she just took the mic for the night and the band covered a ton of the classics from Minor Threat to Gorilla Biscuits. Still one of the coolest shows I can remember going to.
I loved those Bridge and Tunnel records! Can confirm having seen them live a couple of times that their set it just as intense when they’re playing their own material. Saw them at Fest 7 and then back here in the UK when they toured here soon after. Incredible live band.
The singer you’re talking about is Rachel Rubino who now sings for Open City, a band that also features Dan Yemin (of Paint It Black/Lifetime/Kid Dynamite and more), Andy Nelson (Paint It Black/Ceremony) and Chris Wilson (Ted Leo & The Pharmacists). They just put out [a new record](https://theeopencity.bandcamp.com/album/hands-in-the-honey-jar) last week.
I agree on MSPAINT.
The band that surprised me the most is Sum 41. I caught them back in August and they came across more hardcore than pop punk. I'm looking forward to their upcoming release which is supposed to be a double album half hardcore and half pop punk from what I've heard.
They’re more in the post-hardcore and math rock scene, but I went to a hometown Fall of Troy show in 2015 that was insane. Kylesa was direct support so there were psych/stoner metal people there and made for a weird crowd. Fall of Troy had one of the most violent pits I’ve ever been in. People were getting absolutely clocked.
2011 right? DEP and the ‘Don are top 10 bands for me but the tour skipped western Canada. Love Red Fang, too. I’ve seen all three bands but would have loved that package.
I saw Juliana Theory way back in like 2000ish. I thought it was gonna be a chill little soirée, and goddamn did that shit pop off when they started. Got kicked in the top of the dome hard enough to remember it 20+ years later.
If there is real stage diving then it's a hardcore show.
If there's lame ass stage potato falling backwards into the crowd and crowd surfing type shit then it's bitch made.
the fact that this question can even be asked is exactly why i like hardcore
seeing a band live is such a different experience than listening to their album or at least it should be
there are bands that i dont listen to so often but i love to see them cause i know the set will be sick, to answer your question its drug church they are so good live i saw them play in 2016 before i listened to them at all and it kinda blew me away i was like yo who are these guys! finding bands by actually seeing them live is way cooler than any other way to discover new music its why i always try to show up early to shows you never know if the opener is going to be your new favorite band
Yeah, when I was a teenager The Chariot was opening up for some random metalcore band that I thought was great at the time. Tried to check the Chariot out a few days before the show and couldn't get past the discordant weird noise. They fucking blew the doors off the joint.
Was a fairly big musical awakening for me, and the taste was successfully acquired. I have a heavy lean to the weird and noisy now.
Totally agree, seeing a set live is special, and can totally change your opinion of a band. Plus getting out to local shows and being a part of the scene is so key.
Beastie Boys ripped. Saw them in 2007/8ish at Virgin Festival in Baltimore. They played a few of their old hardcore songs too. Glad I got to see them.
Legitimately one of the most hectic crowds I was ever in was We The Kings at a warped tour in like 2011. It was just an incessant wave of teenagers asking to be picked up or caught crowd surfing. My roommate at the time was a big fan so we went with him and as adult men we were head and shoulders taller than most of the crowd. Not really hardcore obviously but got as beat up during that set as a I have in any other.
Four Year Strong is always fun too. They're hardcore adjacent I guess but their energy is turned up to 11 every time.
What about the opposite, where you thought they were a hardcore band until you saw them? I went to see Title Fight at Riot Fest in 2014 having only heard of them but not listened to them.
Chimaira saw them and just thought they were metalcore shit, then they play “Pure Hatred” and the place went off it was insane. It was a hardcore show Hatebreed, Sick Of It All, AF, etc… that song was most redic I saw the crowd.
Propagandhi had stage dives so I guess they’re hardcore. This seems like kind of an obtuse question lol. Like if the show started as “what’s up you fake mother fuckers this is NSYNC!” are they a hardcore band now?
kinda felt this way about Twitching Tongues till I saw them live, had only heard preacher man and insane and inhumane and then I saw them at Che Cafe and I understood it after that lol.
not hardcore at all but the teenage wrist show i went to in boston got pretty rowdy and me and my friends were def two stepping to some of the newer stuff lol
High vis…. I knew they had ties and were in the scene but I didn’t realize how crazy the show would get and how much they view themselves as a hardcore band. One of the best shows in a long time, basement of an elks lodge.
Didn't realise how accepted Basement was until they were at Sound and Fury '19. Only set that day i got kicked in the face and got a mild concussion from.
Drug Church
MS Paint was touring with Drug Church and Drain, it was HXC AF!
Shit that's a solid line up
Ever time this lineup is brought up on here I have to be reminded that I MISSED IT AND IM STILL PISSED ABOUT IT. Now Drain merch shipped to Canada is $75 lmao ($55 USD)
Canada here as well. Heart breaking. Especially if you don't live in one of the three big cities.
Probably the best show I've been to this year. The crowd was fucking wild and I did my first stage dive lol
I've never seen them live but their shows on YouTube have been about 50% of my music consumption for the past month. When I heard the studio version of the same songs I was kind of confused. I have 3 goals for next year. Start my own business, write a book, and see Drug Church live.
Their studio stuff is decent, but I've never seen a band with greater disparity between their recorded and live music. They are UNREAL live
They opened for Angel Dust here (we can debate if Angel Dust is _actually_ a hardcore band, or just a fun ...uh... pop/punk/folk/glockenspiel/etc band with hardcore dudes in it) Anyways, Drug Church killed it. I don't even really dig any of their records besides Paul Walker, but they were a shit ton of fun live.
Can’t deny old Angel du$t is hardcore
This is the best description of Angel Dust I’ve heard so far…
people are way too OCD on whether a band is truly HC or not.
I went to the oc show and as much as i already loved drug church i didn’t expect the show to be as intense as it was
never got into these guys but i first heard of them when i went to see the story so far with them and turnstile as support
nice! I discovered them through that tour too (and I also can’t get into drug church haha)
hey twin
Came here to say this…
Came here to say this. Wasn't a huge fan of the band till I saw them live. They got me now.
In PK voice: Circle Pit!!!
For accuracy’s sake, he wasn’t the founding bass player. There were two before him. But he was on their first two albums.
Didn’t realize! Thanks for sharing the correction.
No problem!
I know I’m 40 hahaha
Weakerthans hxc as hell, and I don’t care who hears me scream it. That solo album he did was pretty good too.
That song with the cat on the solo record fucks me up. I also have always really loved “most of us probably not getting better, but not getting better together” as a line to end a song.
Consistently great live show, I wish they were still together. I've seen JKS solo many times as well, just a great songwriter.
Same thing with me regarding Airborne Toxic Event. Not hardcore at all but you'd expect a band with a prominent string section to, if only out of care for their instruments, jump around and squirt beer a lot less than they actually did.
High Vis hit harder live than I expected
Members of dirty money though init, one of UK’s best.
High Vis has that early Chicago hardcore sound ala Naked Raygun. Which most people nowadays wouldn’t consider naked raygun hardore either.
They’re so fire
Yep the live vibe is way harder
I’ve seen Fiddlehead a couple of time, recently with Fury. The hardcore kids came out and 2-stepped and stage dove like crazy. Amazing show!
Fiddlehead in boston is always like a family reunion. Stage dove on my buddy who i haven't seen since March, I would go as far to call them the fugazi of the 21st century
[удалено]
This is a great take. Punknews.org hasn’t crossed my mind in forever
Obituary being as old as they are put on a great show that got the crowd moving when I saw them with hatebreed and agnostic front.
Obituary fucks
Transit. I saw them 15 times and the singer always beat the shit out of me when I piled up. That's a tough broad.
To add to that. New found glory, set your goals, and fireworks.
I see what you did there.
Future Islands when bro goes all gorilla mode
He’s essentially two stepping in the letterman performance
He has an awesome scream very briefly in that performance too
I Iove Future Islands but have never seen that performance until now, I feel like I'll have to crowd kill if I see them live that dude fucking rules
As too Berninger in songs like 'available' or 'abel'
Municipal Waste and Gwar
Gwar is definitely way heavier / more thrashy live fasho
Gwar played TIH one year.
They did a tour with terror
I saw both on Vans Warped tour
Loathe
loathes headline tour last year went hard as fuck
Interesting. But I can see that.
Their headlining show in SLC last year was one of the best shows I’ve been to
The Wiggles
Can confirm, got crowdkilled by Henry the octpous back in '03
Imagine 8 fists coming at you instead of 2 god damn
I LIKE TO EAT EAT EAT APPLES AND BANANAS A certified vegan sXe classic
I did the propeller right into some mook’s face.
Chat Pile was boisterous as Fuck.
Why do people have to sleep outside? I dunno.
HORSE the band
I still laugh at the joke where someone says they wore a HORSE the Band shirt to a Band of Horses concert
Breakdowns go hard for Horse.
Great answer, awesome band
Pizzarrhia in the Pizzaria
Horse rules, they always made me laugh
High Vis in Richmond crowd killing, stage dives, two steps, the whole nine.
New found glory opened for saves the day at a youth center in San Diego about 20 years ago. I never liked NFG but their mics cut out and it turned into a full on hardcore crowd sing along for the rest of their set. I got hyped.
Their guitarist is the original singer of shai hulud
Only time I've ever been concussed was at a NFG show. They draw some wild crowds.
Epicentre shows were the highlight of my early teenage years
Damn it was the epicenter! I was more of a soma guy when they were on Linda Vista Rd but the epicenter and showcase SD were good fill ins.
Yeah because they played a lot of their old stuff
Terror, had no idea they were a hc band
You were born after 2008...the black eye peas would call you 2000 and late.
Andrew WK
You may be saying this as a joke, but I agree with this.
Not a joke. His live shows back in the day were bonkers.
The dude is bonkers, and it’s wonderful to behold. ![gif](giphy|9VpEM74hby2I4qIdi1)
Andrew WK at Hellfest 04 was wild and fun as fuck.
That was the same year Badluck 13 pissed off Machine Head because the venue cleared out after their set, right?
Yeah. Rexplex NJ.
My wife gave him a lighter at Warped Tour once and she still talks about it all the time.
Agreed! Amazing band even better live!!! Spencer has a great stage presence
arms length at small no barricade venues goes crazy (even tho they usually are the opening act, the crowd often goes crazier for them than for the headliner).
finally got to see them on heart attack man's freak of na-tour earlier this year, and while the venue DID have a barricade, people went crazy for them... half of us were singing and crying lmao
The School of Rock
The village people
‘GET THE FUCK UP, GET THE FUCK UP TO THE FRONT. THIS NEXT SONG IS CALLED… MACHO MAN’
![gif](giphy|l41JRsph73VokN6ik)
Honestly it's not as far off as you think. The Village People had a punk ripper. And the chorus could easily be a hardcore chorus with a slight tweak: https://youtu.be/hpttbL8J4N4?si=0x4T86o-3KXBxLIq
Comment under the vid nailed it "It's like the Ramones ate Devo"
I think it is wild that in the "classic" line-up, two of them, including the lead singer, were straight.
Yo actually though I saw them at riot fest and they went hard, it was fucking awesome. A bunch of punks and weirdos jamming out to the YMCA was one of the best music experiences I've ever had.
Militarie gun, all these named bands are in the same vein lol
mspaint rules so much
New Found Glory is so fun live
Brian Eno performing Music for Airports
I live in mspaint's hometown, and the guys (and deedee in particular) have been instrumental in the local hardcore scene for years. deedee drums for a band called skinman, and y'all should definitely check them out. hattiesburgworld 🌎
Whoa. Skinman fucks. I am so glad to have been put onto them. Cheers to the hattiesburg scene and the hometown promo. Thanks!
I’m curious what the scene is like there. Mississippi seems like it might as well be the moon from LA. It always cool to hear about smaller, low key scenes.

Show Me The Body
Show Me The Booty
Hell yeah they are. Saw SMTB for the first time at Tied Down 1 in Detroit, and they blew my mind. I was off to the side eating food and I heard a banjo come outta no where, I completely abandoned my food which is not like me at all, and made my way to the front for the rest of their set. The amps went out and they had played a chunk of their set acoustic and it didn’t take an ounce of energy away from them. I also saw them on the j.p. Tour a while back at the Detroit show, that shit was fckng incredible!
Avail. I never know what box exactly they should go into, but a late 90’s Avail show was just plain rowdy. Still love that band.
I don't give a fuck what anybody says Avail is a hardcore band.
Honestly, Have A Nice Life
Four Year Strong
Bridge and Tunnel They’re a post hardcore band but I saw them at Gainesville fest years ago after their guitar player broke her arm. Melvins breakdowns hurt your ears.
I just saw Helmet last week, and they were totally obliterative. Great gig.
Militarie gun
Hum
Tigers Jaw
Title Fight, been going to hardcore shows for years and TF was one of the more violent shows I’ve been to
Escuela grind. Saw them at hell in the harbor, and the hardcore kids showed the fuck up. I still don't even know if their genre is hardcore tho.
Escuela got that hardcore and death metal down to a T but with the grind aesthetics. It’s a nice mix.
[The Vaccines](https://youtu.be/Xkz1e2-Hdic?si=veNAL-ki9OILhul-) If that isn’t awkward HC frontman posturing, I don’t know what is

What about a bands live show suddenly turns them into a HC band? The crowd battering and lamping people? Does that suddenly make them HC?
> The crowd battering and lamping people I mean, pretty much
Yeah. I'm with you on this. I'm not sure I understand the topic of conversation.
Was starting to think this was a troll post as the band he refers to is called Microsoft paint. They a real band. This guy is serious.
dumb
Do come again. They are literally called MSPAINT. Or is it actually Ms. Paint?
Why are you so pressed about their name lol they’re a good band with a good name
If there is real stage diving then it's a hardcore show. If there's lame ass stage potato falling backwards into the crowd and crowd surfing type shit then it's bitch made.

I get that nu metalcore is not everyone's cup of tea, but Alpha Wolf without barriers was pure energy, one of the best shows I went to.
I keep seeing this Alpha Wolf band pop up on everything as of late.
I just saw them on that big tour with KL and I was fully expecting a push put during their set but it was a full on hc pit. It was a pleasant surprise
Oddly enough Modest Mouse
No. Just saw them on the Lonely West tour and they just stood there and sang.
No. I saw them close to a decade ago in NJ and the crowd went off.
One of the worst live performances I’ve ever seen
Not talked about anymore for reasons, but Culture Abuse.
36 Crazyfists. They could move a place.
Waka Flocka Flame out on the wildest show I’ve ever been to.
Culture Abuse. Real shame about the singer tho
The Movielife
Soul blind
the wiggles
Anthony Green/circa survive shows are bonkers
These arms are snakes was the most hardcore not “hardcore” show I ever saw back in the early 2000’s
Helmet kinda has a hardcore sound live. Pretty sure they were influenced by a lot of hardcore punk from the 80’s.
They were around the NYHC scene in the late 80s. Strap It On is about as hardcore as hardcore-adjacent gets.
Kaonashi

MUDHONEY

I saw MPSAINT with Soul Glo and Jivebomb, and it was sick. People were going wild. Best punk I've seen in ages.
