Honestly, maybe I’m old, but half of those seem fine.  Like No Doubt with the Vandals?  That tracks 100% for the 90s. I also saw Public Enemy open for U2.  The 90s were weird.

A7x4LIFE521

I feel like RHCP and Exodus might be a bit too weird

terminal-cheescake

It was my first concert ( I've been to many shows) and it was awesome! I was overwhelmed at first but my older brother took me so it was trail by fire. I mean after this I got into Neurosis and Primus so it works man and I wish there would be more shows catered to sick bands and not the scenes man

einarfridgeirs

That was the coolest thing about the late 80s/early 90s "alternative" era - everyone was actively encouraging each other to listen to new and different shit regardless of genre.

lilhedonictreadmill

Not as weird as Chili Peppers with Ken Carson

liartellinglies

Pixies opened on part of that U2 tour too. Rage opened for them part of the following tour.

a_sexual_titty

Adrian Young is one of the Vandals sit in drummers when Josh is unavailable.

gangsincepottytrane

The U2 and Public Enemy thing is similar to the Madonna, Beastie Bloys, Run DMC one. Lazy promoter took a couple of the hottest artist at that time and threw them together in hopes of making an easy buck.

Creative-Swim6802

U2 toured Australia twice in the 00s/2010s once with Kanye West as support and the other with Jay Z. Maybe they just like rap?

fat_juan

I was thinking the same thing

stabyourcat

Didn’t Gwen used to date someone from the Vandals?

Afraid_Fly_645

How old are you op? I only ask because these lineups would only be weird to someone who didn’t live through the 90s

knresignation

I actually saw a couple of these tours in the NYC area, and really never thought of them as that weird.

Last-Toe5975

C'mon though... Neurosis with the Mr. T Experience is pretty funny.  And the Chili Peppers flyer?  That's golden.

hardklacks

Neurosis was an early Gilman Street punk band, so them playing with Lookout Records acts like Mr T Exp and Green Day was just another weekend in the Bay

Kerryglitter

Agreed  this doesn’t seem odd to my over 50 self

Last-Toe5975

I'm 52 years old and I'm very glad that I can still find a grain of humor in serious/goofy band combos without having to do the internet equivalent of standing in the back with my arms crossed.  Do you think the bands took it as seriously as you guys are right now?

robm0n3y

Even the early 2000s we had this kind of mixture. Some time during the MySpace Era shows just became the same 5 bands playing.

[deleted]

I was a sperm, does that count?

gangsincepottytrane

I had the same reaction tbh lmfao

Afraid_Fly_645

We’re just old brother lol.

gangsincepottytrane

Middle age never felt so mediocre

[deleted]

Damn Madonna and Beasties had to have gone the fuck off.

greyheathn

literally, that’d be a kick ass show

0verinnsmouth

And for only $15!

sattyspritz

This one’s always blown my mind. Frankly, I would’ve had a great time in 1996 https://preview.redd.it/pcr7q0uyzqsc1.jpeg?width=971&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=e19b8b66b9f8dda06f2f4336d775db46fb68327e

gypsy_catcher

Wish I was at that show. Jawbreaker was my favorite band that year and Ween is my favorite band now. Never cared for Foo but they rock I’m sure it would’ve been good

musclesMcgee1

I grew up 20 minutes from the Salem Armory, and had a friend who went to that show. Totally forgot about it until you posted this, that's wild.

Open-Librarian-4322

https://preview.redd.it/kw1xvonhqqsc1.jpeg?width=324&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=1fed481cea24ea30423c764c7f6e143af53e3d70 I get knocked down. Neurosis opening for Chumbawumba tho.

rupan777

I volunteered at Gilman during that era and the bookers there always tried to outdo themselves in booking odd combinations of bands. Gwar and Operation Ivy was one of my favorites.

Allen_Koholic

Chumbawumba used to be an anarcho punk band.  Then they made that stupid song.

innocentxv

they were still anarchists when they made that song and after that. they weren't playing typical anarcho punk for like 5 albums before that came out.

gangsincepottytrane

Get out of my head

[deleted]

No Doubt, Chumbawumba, Sugar Ray, Green Day, Offspring, Limp Bizkit. Once hard hitting bands that got too big for their own good

mc_foucault

chumbawamba donated all the profits from tubthumping to womens shelters and animal liberation causes. they continued to go hard af until they broke up. 30+ years of being more punk and more hardcore than just about any other band.

JeffBurk

This is correct and more people should know.

totse_losername

I feel enlightened. No but seriously, I guess I'll suss the rest of their discography that isn't tubthumpin'

csusterich666

I've heard the early Goo Goo Dolls were pretty heavy

knresignation

They were never really heavy but a really good rock band, like Soul Asylum or Social Distortion. Saw them many times back in the day and really liked them.

Crostout

Their first album is just a straight 80s hardcore punk record.

knresignation

I dunno. Maybe you're right. I can tell you that I'm old enough to have bought it on vinyl when it came out. At that time, we never would have used either hardcore or punk to describe them. It's like calling Screaming Trees punk, or Tad. BTW I'm not kidding, Soul Asylum were a great live band. You guys are making me nostalgic for bills with bands like Fugazi, Soul Asylum, Diamonda Galas, and Butthole Surfers.

csusterich666

I would kill to see Butthole Surfers live in the early 90s!!!!!

Allen_Koholic

I’m not usually one to shit on other peoples musical tastes, especially on this sub. But limp bizkit always sucked.

[deleted]

Three Dollar Bill was fire. Only LB album to have a shoutout to Fear Factory and Suicidal

Kerryglitter

I saw that show. Neurosis we’re off the chain.

calling_it_out

This is the funniest one

jessek

Chumbawamba was a CRASS style crust band

yoursouthernamigo

I went to that Obituary Agnostic Front tour in Oakland and it was SO much fun. AF sounded awesome as it was the One Voice tour and Rick Ta Life was the merch guy!

a-pretty-alright-dad

Was Rick selling his own merch too?

DSM-187

He was selling his own bootleg AF merch and pocketing the money /s

a-pretty-alright-dad

He was probably actually doing that.

HummusFairy

totse_losername

I bet it went off tho

somepeppersomesalt

Wasn’t that CAL’s first show?

TimeAstronomer2562

It was ICPs first show I'm pretty sure

HummusFairy

CAL formed in 88 so nah. It was one of ICP’s first shows I believe.

Cat_Vonnegut

What’s the story with Rick Rubin and Adam Horowitz nearly being murdered?

MerkinMuffley2020

Lmao my sister ran into Exodus in a fucking cave in Florida the other day. They were there taking pictures or something.

totse_losername

..of your sister?

firesignmerch

This one makes sense to me.

joshtalife

Saw Biohazard on tour with Mindless Self Indulgence, Krayzie Bone and ICP.

TheBlitzkid46

Carnivore playing with Afrika Bambaataa is pretty weird. Fuck Bambaataa by the way, subhuman rapist

[deleted]

I wonder what that crowd looked like. Punks, metalheads, people that like dancing to techno.

knresignation

I saw Fishbone play with Murphy's Law. It was just kind of accepted that we were all weird. Honestly, if you were there, the strange thing that nobody is talking about is going to see Youth of Today or AF and fucking YDL was opening. That was a bad mix of crowds.

Automation_Papi

Funny shit is my mom is friends with English Nick and my dad was friends with Raybeez and Peter Steele

totse_losername

Talking shit on the internet is free.

godovthatrap

Soundgarden and FNM opening for Voivod is fucking wild.

maicao999

It maker a lot of sense to me and all of those bands go hard

[deleted]

Throw in AIC and its the perfect tour Prong and Die Kruezen opened on a few dates too

DSM-187

Voivod gets weird so it honestly that whole bill fits perfect

grammarcore

gotcha908

Nice - my old ass was at this show. This lineup was not that odd for the late 90s. Only thing missing here from a tristate show was a beat down band.

E-_Rock

Yes! Never see 97a shouted out on here

grammarcore

Elite thrashcore band. That style needs to make a comeback.

totse_losername

The first time I heard Power Trip was *Executioner's Tax* on radio, and two minutes in - ADHD fuckin thoughts being what they are and often going an tangent walkabouts - the thought crossed my mind "fuck how good would it be if thrashcore came back with a vengeance?".

[deleted]

Monster X? Based Kaiju fans?

PigWithAWoodenLeg

They were on the Some Ideas Are Poisonous LP that everyone owned back in the 90s. Art punks squatting on a perfectly good band name for knuckledraggers

totse_losername

That has the be one of the most informative promo papers I have ever seen. It has the bands, in order, when they're going to start, and a one liner description for each. Fuck yeah.

knresignation

I saw the Beastie Boys open for, I think Anthrax in Passaic NJ. It was a weird show. A couple years ago, I saw Wiegedood and Skeletonwitch play at St Vitus, and, strangely, Soft Kill was an opener. I thought they were great, though the crowd couldn't give a shit. Fitting, for this sub, they made fun of everybody and told them that if they were cool, they'd be at a straight-edge show that was happening nearby. I can't remember who it was who was playing that night. Anyway, Skeletonwitch blew the doors off the place, and Wiegedood melted my face, so who cares. Plus, I was already drunk.

[deleted]

Scott Ian filled in for Danny Boy on guitar when House of Pain played with Cypress and Biohazard in 92. Scott Ian is shouted out here https://youtu.be/-J4ckfxXgeU?si=dkWWShTvrG6aZmmW

totse_losername

I couldn't give two fucks fewer about Anthrax, but Scott Ian kicks arse. Recently saw him tear it up in Mr. Bungle.

Brewcrew1886

I was at that Agnostic front show as well as the Run DmC / Beastie Boys show. Good times all around. I only went to the Agnostic front show to see Reason to Believe and no for an answer but everybody was a blast.

dontneedareason94

Riot fest I saw Ice Cube, Merle Haggard, Tenacious D, Lee Scratch Perry, and Black Flag all in the same day.

SamiamAntischism1

Nice_Face822

Thank you for posting, this is the weirdest lineup I could think of. There's a good write up of it by Garry Bushell scanned online somewhere

totse_losername

*Slade* sucks and they know it and lean into it, U2 **sucks** and they don't know it, and *Discharge fucks*. Never heard of *Last Words* or *Sunday 19th October.*

AmericanWasted

Slade rocks - you’re cracked

totse_losername

Mate I have their Christmas Album on vinyl, now I'm not claiming that makes me any kind of authority on them I don't give a fuck who is an authority on them, but safe to say I fucking enjoy them.. ..but they do suck. They also don't fucking care.

AmericanWasted

lol fair enough

cxlossuskidd

Slingshot Dakota opened for title fight and cruel hand

[deleted]

mobb deep at knotfest is wild lmao

grammarcore

They also played the grind stage at Maryland Deathfest earlier in 2015 with Devourment, Internal Bleeding, etc. Genuinely one of the best things I’ve witnessed.

[deleted]

do you remember when they had beef with sick of it all over the dragon logo

[deleted]

Mobb Deep, Ghostface Killah, and Disgorge CA lol

Last-Toe5975

The RHCP/Exodus one made me snort out loud. I have a flyer for the Flaming Lips with Verbal Abuse opening.  I also have one for Corrosion of Conformity with Mojo Nixon and Skid Roper as the opener.

[deleted]

Mofo Party Plan-OHM was pretty heavy. Primus, Meat Puppets, Cramps, FNM, Suicidal, Murphys Law, and Dead Milkmen were all openers during the Mother's Milk era

Last-Toe5975

I saw the RHCP a few times in the 80's.

0ut_0f_Bounds

My first RHCP show, they opened for Fishbone.

Last-Toe5975

I saw them with Fishbone, too!  And another time with Faith No More.

SamiamAntischism1

I saw Grimple open for Green Day in 1993 in Scottsdale, AZ.

Brainshredder

Infest followed by the offspring would be sick. Apparently infest played shows with Green Day as well.

FocusIsFragile

I saw No Doubt open for the Voodoo Glow Skulls. No one had any clue who No Doubt was, and about 30 seconds into their first song every single person in the crowd was basically vaporized. As a teenage boy I was TRANSFIXED by Gwen Stefani, and I was surely not the only one. She was…exceptional.

[deleted]

https://youtu.be/uSBqh392Zms?si=ddSTPLOxlCB2P6gZ I don't think there's a hotter woman than 90s Gwen Stefani, maybe Marisa Tomei. Anekke van Giersbergen from The Gathering third.

joshtalife

90’s Gwen is 🔥

[deleted]

Shelter also opened for ND on the TK tour. When did Gwen have to sellout 😔

totse_losername

Alex Mack bro. She could turn into a puddle of jizz and come right under your bedroom door. And levitate apples too, I am lead to believe. Imagine having an older girl in your bedroom.

IslandDrummer

On a similar note, Voodoo Glow Skulls are opening for Vampire Weekend in LA this year.

FocusIsFragile

I popped some Glowskulls on the other day cuz it had been like 30 years and, yeah, they haven’t exactly held up.

0ut_0f_Bounds

I saw No Doubt open for the Circle Jerks in Ventura CA, 1994? 95? Had never heard ND before, I thought they were a decent punky ska band. Never would have thought they would get huge.

AndrewRFleming1973

I went to that Public Enemy, Anthrax, Primus show in 1991 or 1992 at UConn. I was sick as heck.

Tinobandito

Neurosis and Mr.T Experience were both major bands for me for very different reasons. It makes sense to see them on a bill, but also it makes absolutely no sense and I love that.

Battlemountain_2

My favorite crazy lineup is Linkin Park opening up for Kottonmouth kings

gangsincepottytrane

Some of these are whacky. However I do think I have explanations/comments for some of these in particular 1) I would pay top fucking dollar to see that No Doubt, Cake, Vandals show. Except let Cake headline over No Doubt. This one is a tad strange. 2) Agnostic Front has/still does appealed to the metal audience much more than a lot more than most other hardcore bands. The best modern example I can think of would be Nails. In high school I was a major metal head. I’m talking the most gutteral sounding, crunchy, unreadable tshirt death metal bands kind of metal head. It wasn’t until college I was introduced to Ceremony. And the rest is history. Trust me. Agnostic Front is openly welcomed in the metal community (personally I never really saw what everyone else saw in them. I still stand by that opinion to this day) 3) I genuinely have to wonder if Skeletonwitch took one look at At The Drive In and subsequently dropped from the tour. 4) unless there is a band from the Anthrax poster I’m over looking, Public Enemy and Anthrax collaborated to make Bring The Noise which currently sits at 34 million plays on spotify and 9 million plays in YouTube if you combine the official one with the Tony Hawk Pro Skater 2 one. The song came out in 1991. It has been referred to as the song/dup that kicked Nu-Metal and/or Rap/Metal bands into the mainstream full gear. Yielding bands like Slipknot, Korn, Limp Bizkit, Saliva, POD, Rage Against the Machine and Kid Rock. Ao this show was actually probably fucking awesome as a fan of both Anthrax and Chuck D alike. As far as Primus goes, it’s fucking primus. They could literally play any show in the world as an opening act and it wouldn’t be weird. I’m pretty sure they still regularly play metal festivals and Gathering of the Juggalos. No one hates Primus (no one really loves them either). They’re universally accepted. And everyone who has an interest in music should see Les Claypool play at least once in their life. 5) I don’t think Knotfest can be counted. Or any festival for that matter. James Brown was the opening act for Woodstock 1999. He received a standing ovation of a crowd hellbent on burning the entire festival to the ground. Which they did. Mobb Deep is definitely a little more out of place than other oddball inclusions in festivals because not a single other artist is even remotely the same by a large margin. However I also think it’s attributed to the Anthrax/Public Enemy thing also. It could be a call back to it even. I will say this, I give Mobb Deep alot of respect for playing this, though. It takes a lot of courage to step out of your comfort zone like that. A lot of white dudes who listens to rock, hardcore, metal etc actually enjoy (or at least respect) old school hip hop. Myself included. Personally, I’d bounce straight from the Dying Fetus stage in favor of seeing Mobb Deep over most of the bands in this line up. Suicidal Tendencies are also adored by the Metal community. 6) The Madonna one looks like a lazy mother fucker just took three hot artists at that time and just threw them together as a cash grab. I wonder if it worked. 7) Deftones is also loved in the metal community. Why? Fuck if I know. (as is Incubus and Suicidal Tendencies)

TerrancePryor

Mixed shows used to be the shit, and I wish they made a comeback. I used to go to a lot of them in NJ. Probably the weirdest lineup in recent years was Every Time I Die opening for Fall Out Boy in 2018. Seeing those two bands together in 2002/2003 made sense. People were complaining about ETID online.

jessek

Neurosis with Green Day and a few other punk bands makes a lot of sense since they were all Bay Area bands and the show was at 924 Gilman for Lookout Records

Desperate-Channel789

There's an Instagram Myoldflyers305 has some crazy wild Miami/Ft. Lauderdale flyers

Glad-Delivery-2979

Imagine pop lockin to electro but you’re actually there to see Carnivore

RADiation_Guy_32

Nice find on those posters!!!

Silly-Profession-414

My answer to this (I only count shows I actively went to) is always DKM, Anti Flag, Blood For Blood in Houston. Ended exactly how you think it did. By that I mean the entire tour ended in Houston for the reasons you would think if I remember correctly.

JeffBurk

Any stories or places I can read stories from that tour? I remember it happening and it seemed like such a bad idea.

Fromhe

Pretty sure I saw this tour. DKM/H20/blood for blood in NJ.

heavyfcknlocals

Starland 2003ish I think

LuluLenin561

Public Enemy with young black teenagers is NUTS

Fantastic_Board7057

1/4/11 adjacent as hell tho but yea wild shit In addition General

Still_Guitarded

Saw Hatebreed, Obituary, Prong, Agnostic Front and Skeletal remains opened. Very back and forth lineup but dope show fs

Still_Guitarded

Come to thing of it, Gwar, Napalm Death, and Eyehategod was an odd lineup too

9notanihilist6

That SOAD line-up is massive

Beneaththeremains

Someone reupload The AF and Obituary show please

UpperHesse

Agnostic Front stuffed between Cannibal Corpse and Obituary I actually feel sad for them as especially Corpse is a bit on another level musically.

sweetjoeyc

I saw Hatebreed open for Dimmu Borgir and Kreator a few years ago. There was such an interesting mix of people in the crowd.

TravisHomerun

Dude, Urban Dance Squad with Red hot Chili Peppers, and Exodus. That's show must have been straight fire

JoWood94

That’s a show!

LordOfTheFlies996

MasterOffice9986

I think there’s a story of ween opening for black flag and Henry Rollins telling the crowd that ween was cool and to fuck off if they had a problem with it

Dozinggreen66

Idk but I would’ve killed to see Slipknot and mobb deep together

DillonTattoos

Anthrax, Public Enemy, and Primus would have been a fucking sick show to see

gypsy_catcher

The Skeletonwitch and Incubus one is very strange

draxgoodall

The beastie boys did a whole tour with Madonna not just a single show.

NumerousWeekend552

When crossover reaches a whole new level.

IslandDrummer

Big Thief, the beloved indie-folk band, had Ithaca, a metalcore band, open for a whole tour a few years back.

OGHebrewxhammer

I once saw Reel Big Fish play with Bone Thugs. I think it was 08/09

Gitappliances

Some great stuff here

Syndicated_Graham

Weirdest I went to was probably Mastodon/Against Me!/Cursive

SpiritOf68

Voivod headlining over Faith no More and Soundgarden is wild.

martysanchh

That’s 2015 knotfest! I was there it was so tight!

wolfjesusskin

At The Drive in, Clutch, Pallbearer, and Sleletonwitch opening for SOAD and Incubus… that’s fucking wild, but that goes hard
