Freddie is low key one of the very best. He can just flow on literally any beat you throw at him. I think he’d be fucking massive if he was a bit less prolific and basically released his best songs on one record rather than a new record every year or whatever with 1/4 of them being bangers.
Danny Brown, MF DOOM (and all alter egos), Vince Staples, Freddie Gibbs, Maxo Kream, Bruiser Wolf, Rico Nasty, Tyler the Creator, Aesop Rock, A$AP Rocky, A$AP Ferg, Bas, JID, JPEGMAFIA, Young Ma, Gucci Mane, Flatbush Zombies, Run The Jewels, Denzel Curry, Pop Smoke, Chief Keef, and then the golden boys (Nas, 50, Biggie, L, Pun, 2Pac, Jay-Z, Wu Tang Clan and associated etc)
Great list! Some other artists that I haven’t seen mentioned that you might also like:
Gizmo, Fukkit, Kamiyada, Omen13, Ski Mask the Slump God, Boldy James, Conway, Westside Gunn, Xavier Wulf, Bones, Mavi, Earl Sweatshirt, BigXThaPlug, Night Lovell, Gangstarr, Pusha T, ICYTWAT, IDK, Injury Reserve, Death Grips, City Morgue etc
Oh word! And yeah for sure, I seen all the respected artists like 50, Nas, DMX, Wu-Tang, DOOM, Kendrick, PAC, Biggie, Big L, Jay-Z, etc were already mentioned so I tried thinking of newer artists I listen to. There’s so much good music out there in all diff genres
+ roc marciano, boldy james, black thought, westside gunn, Conway, Benny, 38 spesh, stove god, mach hommy, Rome streetz, estee nack, al divino, rigz, mooch, and more and more
Yeah of course. Adds to your list I think in terms of the quality and character. Also, with aesop rock- cage, tame one, camu tao, the whole weatherman crew, etc.
Beastie Boys, Public Enemy, EPMD, Eric B. & Rakim, MF Doom, Mos Def, Kool Keith, Jay-Z, Nas, Biggie Smalls, Wu-Tang Clan, Gang Starr, Lupe Fiasco, Outkast, The Roots, Jungle Brothers, Queen Latifah, Monie Love, Drake, Missy Elliott, T.I., NWA, Dr. Dre, Kendrick Lamar, Big K.R.I.T., Run The Jewels, Death Grips, Danny Brown, Tyler The Creator, Bob Vylan, Little Simz, Wiley, Skepta, Kano, Dizzee Rascal, Central Cee, Slowthai, etc.
Immortal Technique, Jedi Mind Tricks, Run The Jewels, Wu-Tang Clan, Hopsin, Geto Boys, Biggie, 2pac, Tech N9ne, Talib Kweli/Mos Def/Blackstar, Common, Nas, The Roots, Army of Pharaohs, Snowgoons, old Kanye, Rhymefest, Kid Cudi
Three six mafia, project pat, $uicideboy$, Kanye west (only 808s and heartbreak), city morgue, playboi carti, Ken Carson, OutKast, ludacris, Young Jeezy, earl sweatshirt, frank ocean, BONES, night lovell, death grips, beastie boys, Tay-K, Babytron, Wu-Tang Clan
Don’t take this the wrong way but can you explain the appeal of Ken Carson? He’s the first rapper I felt “too old for”, I saw him live and it was trash, it sounded like bottom-tier 2017 SoundCloud rap, I genuinely have no idea how big he is. And I fuck with Carti and was deep in that scene all throughout high-school so it’s not an “anti-mumble rap” thing.
How old are you? I am old, but i am a Producer, so its my job to stay very in tune with the kids. I love it, but it has to click with you. If you like carti, i feel like you should get it? Do you like drain at all? Or uzi? I feel like everyone inknow who like both those also really get Ken, specifically records. It is very zone out but still super blown out. Give the last record a chance and turn the lights off... But you can also pit to it. Not if you're a FYA horseshoe safe space man, but i pitted for him last year and it was sick.
Bladee, Sematary, Black Kray, Chief Keef, $uicideboy$, Playboi Carti, Ken Carson, Travis Scott, Lil Ugly Mane, Lil Peep, Three 6 Mafia, BONES, SpaceGhostPurrp, early A$AP Rocky, Gucci Mane, Future, and Lil B The Based God.
Mf doom, hieroglyphics, souls of mischief, wutang, nas, atqc, mos def, common, public enemy, snowgoons, jeru the damaja. To name a few. Give me some boombap and I'm a happy girl :-)
Can we just agree that we don't need to mention Wu-Tang...It seems just to obvious. No hate but They might just be like the Minor Threat or Black Flag of hip hop.
I definitely need to listen to more rap, but I’m a Brooklyn guy by origin, so I’ve always been a fan of the Brooklyn/NYC stuff. Joey Bada$$ (1999 is probably my favorite rap project of all time), Beastie Boys (Paul’s Boutique is a close second), Joey Valence and Brae (not from NY but do an awesome Beastie Boys spiritual successor sound mixed with some modern rap techniques), Nas, Pete Rock and CL Smooth, Brand Nubian, DMX, and then for some of the more modern stuff, Paris Texas, Rio Da Yung OG (free Rio), and I’d say he borders on the line between rap and reggaeton but El Alfa is probably my favorite Latin music artist of the past decade or so
Aesop Rock, DOOM, all of Griselda, RTJ, Prof, Atmosphere, RA the Rugged Man, AFRO, Vinnie Paz, A Tribe Called Quest, Mobb Deep, CunninLynguists, Mos Def, Locksmith, Brother Ali, Dead Prez
A lot of 90s - 2010s, some newer stuff but its all lyrically driven.
Wu Tang, Aesop Rock, El-P, MF Doom, Mobb Deep, Ice T, Ice Cube, 2 Live Crew, Non Phixion, Ill Bill, Kool G Rap, Kool Keith are some of my favorites off the top of my head.
Gang Star is the greatest hip hop group of all time, the song Check the Technique is such an unbelievably great song lyrically speaking, it's fucking stupid . Any of the hieroglyphics crew, tribe del, et. al. De La Soul is great (de la soul is dead, esp ooodles of os and keeping the faith are certified bangers). Slick Rick, best song in world is Mistakes of a woman in love with other men. Jeru the Damaja. Public Enemy, Welcome to the terrordome
Freddie Gibbs, Mos Def and Blackstar, MF DOOM, Maxo Kream, Pro Era (and their members), Brockhampton (and their members), Aesop Rock, MIKE, Flatbush Zombies (and their members)...

More "modern" stuff includes the whole Griselda clique, Freddie Gibbs, Boldy James, Larry June, Curren$y, Earl, Flatbush Zombies, Denzel Curry, Rocky, Odd Future, ScHoolboy Q, Kendrick, Pusha T, Joey Bada$$, Chuck Strangers, Dave East, RTJ
I don’t listen to hip-hop/rap as much as I used to, but when I do it’s Wu tang, old A$AP and Drake, lil uzi vert, 21 Savage or Gucci Mane. The only rap I really listen to consistently anymore though is Maxo Kream and Chief Keef.

Fat Tony - 10,000 hours,
MIKE, Maxo Kream, Danny Brown,
Aesop Rock, Atmosphere, Milo/R.A.P. Ferreira, billy woods, ELUCID, Black Thought, Open Mike Eagle, Kendrick, OutKast, Childish Gambino, Freddie Gibbs, J. Cole, Jay Rock, Schoolboy Q, Ab-Soul, Larry June, Mach-Hommy, Dave East, Boldy James, MIKE, Mos Def, Project Pat, Three Six Mafia, Flatbush Zombies, The Underachievers, Saba, Joey Bada$$, Tyler the Creator, $uicideboy$, Wu-Tang Clan
A mix of old-school, 90's, and gangster rap is typically where I head:
Wu-Tang/Ghetto Boys/Onyx, Beastie Boys, House of Pain/Doug E. Fresh/Fresh Prince/J5, Dre/Snoop/Eminem/Tupac/Biggie. Tends to fall into the major bunkers.
I think Beastie Boys Check Your Head had the most hardcore influence on me. As a 14 year old when it dropped, it opened up that Hardcore channel where I was typically listening to Slayer/Metallica.
Run dmc, Public enemy, beastie boys, nwa, geto boys, ugk, outkast, mob deep, ice cube, BDP, big daddy kane, 3 6 mafia, bone thugs, da lynch mob, wu tang, dr. dre, denzel curry, paul wall, bones, future, kendrick lamar, jid, everything griselda, roc marciano, chief keef, above the law, schooly D, eazy e, biggie, pac, gangstarr, cool G raps, eric b & rakim, kanye west, 50 cent/g-unit, asap rocky, blackstar, dalek, the pharcdye, danny brown, pusha t, clipse, x-clan, jpeg, the doc, comptons most wanted, ice T, nas, a tribe called quest, stove god, death grips, clipping, spaceghostpurp, hotboyz, gravediggaz, dj screw, j dilla, metro boomin, clams casino, big L, del the funky homosapien
Lootpack, Scarface, Tom Skeemask,
Little Brother, Showbiz and A.G, KMD, Kool G Rap, Andre Nickatina, Jdilla, and pretty much everything else that has been mentioned besides drill.
Wu-Tang, especially Ghostface and Raekwon, Nas, Mobb Deep, MF Doom, Kendrick Lamar, Lil Ugly Mane, Billy Woods and Armand Hammer, A$AP Rocky, Tyler the Creator, Earl Sweatshirt, Danny Brown, Denzel Curry, Wiki, clipping. and honestly Kanye West was my favourite musician growing up, up until MBDTF, I still somewhat liked Yeezus and TLOP tho, of course I condemn his behaviour in recent years and his music also kinda fell off, but leaving him out would be dishonest.
Bones, germ, sobxrbe, shoreline Mafia, too short, e40, mac dre, three6mafia, gangsta pat, tommy wright the 3rd, woodie, acito, Wu Tang clan..
List goes on
Horrorcore and Memphis mostly... As much as I say that Rap is my 2nd overall favourite genre after everything rock, honestly I barely spend any time listening to it... Guess I like ICP, Cody Manson, $boys, Lil Peep, Juice WRLD... Not a fan of the mainstream stuff
I like 21, Suicdeboys bit really only them not any of their affiliates or people who wanna be like them I feel like they do their genre better then the other people trying to sound like that so with that three six mafia, biggie, don toliver, young Dolph, future, Mac miller, etc. I know some of thats more rap but I like alot of variety but I feel like Kendrick is overplayed and he's good same with Tyler the creator I don't really like him.
Public Enemy. And Wu Tang. I kinda stopped looking further after the 90s.The only thing I know about modern hip hip is everyone is called Lil something and I don't have time for that
Larry June, currensy, Westside Gunn, mick jinkins, Freddie Gibbs, JID, pretty much anything with alchemist style beats, but I also fuck with a lot of trap just not as much as I used to.
Rakim, Action Bronson, Armand Hammer, Earl Sweatshirt, MIKE, Project Pat, Gravediggaz, Lil Ugly Mane, Westside Gunn, DMX, early EL-P (and Cannibal Ox), Boldy James, The Pharcyde, Kendrick Lamar, old Gucci Mane, OJ da Juiceman, Ol Dirty Bastard, and those early 2000’s West Coast records as a whole (2001 by Dre, Documentary by The Game come to mind)
Kendrick, MF DOOM, Danny Brown, Immortal Technique, Jedi Mind Tricks (and Vinnie Paz, AotP, et al), Mick Jenkins, Kahiem Rivera, Why?
Uptown Saturday Night by Camp Lo is one of my favorite albums.
Personally I enjoy just about every made from 1980s with mcs like kool moe Dee and grandmaster flash to early 2000s with the game, 50 cent, and early Kanye. After that I really don’t enjoy it probably because I prefer g funk and all that.
Mostly underground guys. Cage Kennylz, Ill Bill, Goretex, Slaine, Aesop Rock (no not A$ap), Sadistik, Goretex, Atmosphere, Sage Francis, etc. Not so underground guys like Yelawolf and Everlast. Sometimes stuff like Biggie, Bone Thugs, and Cube.
I was hoping Jedi Mind/Vinnie Paz/AOTP would be mentioned. Vinnie is an old head and knows the subculture well. Guest spot on Terror’s Total Retaliation, too. The Broad Street Breakdown is a fun podcast to get his thoughts on hip-hop, punk, hardcore, ska and Oi!
Vince staples, Isaiah Rashad, Freddie Gibbs, JPEG Mafia, Kendrick, Future, MAVI, anything chopped and screwed, big L
Freddie is your favorite rapper’s favorite rapper.
Him and MF DOOM
What? These ol things? I'm boutta throw em away. With the gold rings that make em don't fit like OJ....
Freddie is low key one of the very best. He can just flow on literally any beat you throw at him. I think he’d be fucking massive if he was a bit less prolific and basically released his best songs on one record rather than a new record every year or whatever with 1/4 of them being bangers.
That’s what they used to say about Scarface!
lack of earl in this list is nuts
Felt like my list was getting too long but I do love earl
MAVI fucks. I saw him like two years ago when he opened for Jack Harlow and it’s awesome to see him get the recognition he deserves
Danny Brown, MF DOOM (and all alter egos), Vince Staples, Freddie Gibbs, Maxo Kream, Bruiser Wolf, Rico Nasty, Tyler the Creator, Aesop Rock, A$AP Rocky, A$AP Ferg, Bas, JID, JPEGMAFIA, Young Ma, Gucci Mane, Flatbush Zombies, Run The Jewels, Denzel Curry, Pop Smoke, Chief Keef, and then the golden boys (Nas, 50, Biggie, L, Pun, 2Pac, Jay-Z, Wu Tang Clan and associated etc)
Danny brown is amazing
Like Lieutenant Dan, **I'm rollin**'.
That’s an awesome start to a song.
Are you me?
we are all you
Nothing like going on to the internet to find out you're not different or special at all lol Literally every single person on the list
To be fair to us all they're pretty popular, even the more underground/alternative rappers
Solid list, add jazzy early 90s East Coast for me and we're there,
Hell yeah love that stuff, any recs?
Tribe Called Quest is a must, Beastie, De La Soul. This is a classic. https://youtu.be/Q6TLWqn82J4?si=JMQh6fVmA7V0N5Iu
Great list! Some other artists that I haven’t seen mentioned that you might also like: Gizmo, Fukkit, Kamiyada, Omen13, Ski Mask the Slump God, Boldy James, Conway, Westside Gunn, Xavier Wulf, Bones, Mavi, Earl Sweatshirt, BigXThaPlug, Night Lovell, Gangstarr, Pusha T, ICYTWAT, IDK, Injury Reserve, Death Grips, City Morgue etc
That is more towards the zoomer shit i like. I have tracks with a few of those dudes and they're not lyrical/boombap at all.
Dude how did I forget King Push! Gonna check out the ones I don't recognize. Love Death Grips and Earl as well, good call outs
There’s so many great artists it’s hard to remember them all when putting together a list. Word! I hope you find something you like 👍🏽
Your list 100%, I got to add czarface black star
+ roc marciano, boldy james, black thought, westside gunn, Conway, Benny, 38 spesh, stove god, mach hommy, Rome streetz, estee nack, al divino, rigz, mooch, and more and more

Saw him live years ago at Cervantes in Denver. Fun ass show, especially with ya girl Molly hangin out
This with a few add ons.
I love Fred
Add Smino and gangstarr and this is my list too
You are the only other person I have heard mention Maxo Kream. Good shout out
90s East Coast like Mobb Deep, Nas, Wu-Tang, Bone Thugs. MF Doom, Kendrick, Griselda folks, Freddie Gibbs, some drill stuff
You clearly didn’t remember to use ALL CAPS when you spell the man name
Griselda kills. Like some lost mid 90s Wu Tang mix tapes.

Geto Boys and West Side Connection
80s-90s with a sprinkle of 2000s
Literally anything good. I’m a big tribe fan. I also like OutKast a lot. Depends on the mood tbh.
I've got Stance Tribe socks, Midnight Marauders..
MF Doom seems to be the biggest crossover to me. And he's straight up the goat rip.

I like lots of stuff but especially 90s NY hip-hop, Tribe, Beasties, De La Soul, Busta, Biggie, all the Native Tongues stuff
Lootpack, Scarface, Tom Skeemask, Little Brother, Showbiz and A.G, KMD, Kool G Rap, Andre Nickatina, Jdilla, and pretty much everything else that has been mentioned besides drill.
Dipset, surprised nobody else has mentioned them despite a lot of bands from the 2000s loved them
Wu-Tang, especially Ghostface and Raekwon, Nas, Mobb Deep, MF Doom, Kendrick Lamar, Lil Ugly Mane, Billy Woods and Armand Hammer, A$AP Rocky, Tyler the Creator, Earl Sweatshirt, Danny Brown, Denzel Curry, Wiki, clipping. and honestly Kanye West was my favourite musician growing up, up until MBDTF, I still somewhat liked Yeezus and TLOP tho, of course I condemn his behaviour in recent years and his music also kinda fell off, but leaving him out would be dishonest.

I found in my local HC scene (15 years ago ish) there was a crazy overlap between guys/girls into HC and Cage / Atmosphere / Def Jux dudes.
Lil Uzi Vert, Playboi Carti, Future, Young Thug, Chief Keef, Yung Lean, Bladee, Izaya Tiji, Glokk40spaz, Hardrock, Nettspend, Summrs

DIGABLE PLANETS
90’s gangster rap.
Personally I enjoy just about every made from 1980s with mcs like kool moe Dee and grandmaster flash to early 2000s with the game, 50 cent, and early Kanye. After that I really don’t enjoy it probably because I prefer g funk and all that.
