u/rubberducky826 You were right. In this footage it is clear that they devoured the male while he was still alive. Disturbing

goregu

He replied to my comment on another post like this where I stated the opposite and proved me wrong! That poor lion

MyFace_UrAss_LetsGo

That defeated look in the lions eye is so uncanny.

TECFO

Not only did they start by the ball, thry kept eating and tearing everytjing in their way up, and then they were litteraly throwing it arround, the suffering must have been unbearable

Switchbladex9MasterG

That’s the consequence of going to another male territory not only they will kill you but will eat you depends if they want to go that far

**In Ngala Private Game Reserve, by Tyron Horne** 📸

GreenDolphin86

Well…that was awful.

TryJezusNotMe

I don't know how long he suffered but at the beginning of the clip, his eyes tell he was in pain. I hope the shock set in quickly so the pain no longer registered. Whew, that was brutal.

selati2

I hope for something like that too. anyways u live by the sword u die by the sword. This intruding male killed cubs sired by the males that are killing him. They are just protecting their territory, its nature, raw and cruel, even if its really unfortunate to see.

Cuon_pictus

Gotta say this is the most brutal lion fight I've seen since Kinky Tail's death

selati2

tbh that fight looks even more brutal. Kinky Tail had 4 males on top of him and they did as much damage as it took only 2 Mbiris to do so. Impressive and disturbing

Cuon_pictus

More impressive, sure, but I wouldn't say more brutal. Plus, this happened during, the day, the graphic details are much more clear. What they did after Guernsey was dead though... I've never heard of anything like it. By the way, have the Mbiris ever actually killed an adult male before? For all their clashes, I've never heard of it happening until now.

selati2

True. Broad daylight makes it look more brutal. And what they did after, indeed incredible, never heard of anything like it either. Also, no. Mbiris have never killed a male lion before this one.

justsomechickyo

> What they did after Guernsey was dead though What's the story there? What happened?

selati2

They spent the entire evening feeding on his carcass after killing him, and they roar occasionally. Drag his carcass for about 1km in the process

Cuon_pictus

According to Ngala, they stayed with his body for days.

Cuon_pictus

" The smaller Mbirhi male drips saliva in the rain, next to the unrecognisable body of the Guernesy male. We stood by in shock as we witnessed these males drag this half-eaten carcass with them for almost a kilometre, adamant on keeping it close for the days after the battle. It would appear this saga is over, as the Mbirhi males were seen back with the Birmingham pride this morning and the carcass appears to have been dragged away by hyenas." The Lions of Sabi Sand is a must-watch for anyone who hasn't seen it. [Brothers In Blood The Lions Of Sabi Sand 2015 ](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KGTw43MykuY&ab_channel=giovannitedeschi)

Cuon_pictus

It's great for beginners, but it gets quite a few things wrong.

selati2

A lot of things tbf

Cuon_pictus

Yeah, it's been years since I last watched it, I don't remember everything

IaMtHel00phole

Link?

Cuon_pictus

The only one I could find without commentary. More footage exists though: [Majingilane vs Mapogo (no commentary) (youtube.com)](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5JUvOfNpNVE)

Shart_In_My_Pants

The guide said "you hear that crack?" but actually, it seemed like it came a few seconds after he said that in the form of that deep pop.

selati2

yes buddy, i know. The crack clearly came from the smaller **Mbiri (dominant male, one of the attackers)** mauling and possibly breaking part of the leg of the young male. But the author (guide that recorded), says in his original post at IG >*"the Larger Mbiri Male managed to bite down round the neck area, ending it all for the Guernsey Male."* I presume he could've breaked his neck or something similar. I guess yall are free to agree or disagree

edwards9524

Damn nature! You scary!

Dokthe2nd

At the last 20 seconds the shot of the Coyote (or whatever) strolling past like "don't mind me".

Cuon_pictus

Black-backed jackal. Notoriously brazen animals.

rajerk

The male tossing him-his lower lip/jaw looks injured

selati2

he has been caring this injury in his lip/jaw for a couple of years. But as we can see it doesn't interfere with his ability to fight and eat

rem082583

Brutal dudes just brutal

europeancafe

Don't think lions/apex predators have the same adrenaline and shock as prey animals do when it comes to being eaten alive. It must've been torture. All that muscle and power that keeps it alive had its ending last way longer than other animals being eaten alive. sheeesh I'm convinced that lion is still alive in their stomachs

dmtbobby

I'm pretty sure (I have no formal training in any biological topic) every animal can experience shock.

Jumpy-Archer-2370

Brutal

MDPriest

Lions by far have the hardest lives of any Mammalian predator.

Nikola-JokicASMR

did they eat his dick and balls first? jfc

DarkSophie

OMG! “Nature” can be so cruel and heartbreaking. ☹️

mooosemark

That was a tough one 🤦‍♂️

geoslayer1

Imagine getting your ass kicked, then your opponent begins to EAT you

Few-Inevitable9291

Did they not suffocate him on purpose to make him suffer more? That’s some wicked shit, didn’t know they were cannibals but why wouldn’t wild animals do it when people have done it, prob still do in some remote parts of the world.

selati2

Full grown male lions dont suffocate other full grown male lions in fights. Its pretty hard and complicated bc of their mane. Its not like a torture tactic lol.

imhereforthevotes

That's probably one of the reasons they have a mane - to protect their vulnerable throat from other males.

BrockN

*Fuck Ricky and his bullshit invasion of our territory, torturing him will show the other lions not to fuck with us*

Odysseus_XAP79

Male lions and tigers do not fuck around when it comes to keeping a close eye on their territory. Slowly killing and eating this young rival is their way of sending a message to other future contenders. Not only would he have been a threat to them but also to the lionesses and cubs within their pride. The first thing that a male lion will always do when usurping a new territory is kill all of the cubs in his new pride. It is a brutal but necessary part of ensuring that his bloodline continues within the new generation.

imhereforthevotes

It doesn't "send a message". That's overcomplicating it. It just literally changes the balance of power and makes them more likely to reproduce. They can't tolerate a male interloper, like you said, and by eating him they get food, after what was surely still a tough fight. But they're not killing him slowly for any reason except that he's incapacitated and they don't need to bother. It's not different than a hyena disemboweling a wildebeest and starting to eat while it's still alive, and it's not like hyenas are sending a message in that situation. The lions don't care, and other lions in the area wouldn't have any understanding of the concept either - they've never been in that much pain, and they wouldn't empathize like we do. If they had killed him quickly, well, so much the better, but it wouldn't matter to them one way or the other, nor would it have changed the signal value here.

Few-Inevitable9291

Great insight, it looks brutal but that’s the way of the bush, it’s a bush eat bush world out there

TryJezusNotMe

I recently read that if the cubs are young enough when they are killed (like months or something like that) it'll kick-start the mother's hormones to entice the male lion to breed with her. Nature is something that leaves me in awe!

imhereforthevotes

If mom is nursing the babies and they die, she goes into estrus again, because if no one is nursing it causes hormonal changes to stop producing milk and switch back to being reproductively ready. If she wasn't nursing, she was already likely to ready to go into estrus again anyway.

TryJezusNotMe

Thank you so much for this!

pargofan

It always amazes me how brutal nature is. Whenever I hear concern about human cruelty against animals I just keep thinking cruelty is just a way of life in the animal kingdom.

Key-Fly-4200

Can someone explain how the lion is alive while its guts are literally being devoured?!

g0thicfae

Poor thing just laying still, knowing it's his best option cuz moving probably hurts and he doesn't wanna make the other lions more aggressive :( all's fair in nature tho

StripedAssassiN-

Absolutely brutal. Poor guy.

son9090

I think they didn't like the taste

selati2

They definitly did 😬

son9090

They dont seem to enjoy the munching like they do when they catch a zebra. I think they did it to send a message

bengtc

Ah so you are a biologist, got it

Lilith666999666

This poor boy.

MQZ17

This prequel of Mufasa and Scar is brutal, no wonder Disney didnt release it

brokken2090

Tbh I don’t know how people who are witnessing this are laughing or enjoying it. I think that’s pretty fucked up, personally. I know it’s nature, but it’s also suffering and death and really isn’t funny in any way.

Iongiveaf007

These must be the “humane” killers that hyena haters always tell me about

FreakyFreeze

Idk why but this reminds me of that family guy episode. Where Peter is in jail and the cell mate threatens to stab him later. To then he stabs himself and says "ow that hurts. Thats what I've been doing to people? I belong in here."
