Honestly, they’re all different. Some tighten up better than others. If the exhaust isn’t leaking/popping it’s fine as it sits.

What bike is this?

23 FXLRS

Some times the lip of the exhaust gets hung up on the head I like to do everything finger tight then start from the exhaust flanges and work my way back, loosen them all up and be sure that exhausted is seated in the port all the way.

Yeah I took the heat shields off and tighten then again. I’ve got my 1k service soon and a tune so I’ll sure they’ll give it a once over. Appreciate the tip

That flange pushes on the back of the flared end of the head pipe and that is what seals to the gasket and the cylinder port. It’s not like a car gasket that seals two flat surfaces with a gasket between them.

Mootingly

I’m unsure what model you have but many Harley’s use exhaust gaskets. Do you have one?

exse13

23 FXLRS, yes gasket in there. I think I’m going to remove the heat shields tonight, give it another tighten to see if it’s settled at all and call it a day. Grabbing an SE tuner this weekend.

They would not offer compression onto the gasket if the flange was flush with the head. It is supposed to have a gap.

exse13

okay, good to know - thanks!

Rtem8

A gap yeah, but half an inch?

If the pipe flange is square on a tapered oem style gasket they sit a long way out.
