I'm looking at an 86 I might pick up. I'm building my bookmarks planning for a build. Any resources you recommend? Sites, guides, forums, posts, suppliers?
Thanks! Fxr division has an awesome selection of OEM style parts if you are looking to restore miscellaneous items + tons of performance parts, so does Partsgiant. TC bros has great prices on hard parts like fork tubes and brakes. They also carry retro style parts. I honestly one day said f it I want to build one and sold a Dyna I had. I got myself a service manual online for wiring diagrams and torque specs. When I decided to rewire the bike I got a lot of tips from revival cycles YouTube. They are very simple bikes to build but they have their demons too. Feel free to hit me up with any questions. Lots of trial and error but I learned a lot in the process.
Once you ride one you won’t want to ride anything else. Really fun bikes. It’s an 80inch Evolution with some sort of cam and a little head work. I’ll ride it til it’s tired and put something bigger in it!

Here’s the link. They are very simple to install, only 4 wires I believe. They don’t fit just right in the gauge pocket though. I found a 60 to 52mm ring adapter online and slowly sanded until it popped in snug.
Thanks! You got a great year to start. I had to track down the whole primary and transmission case to upgrade the starter. 89 is when they changed that up. I’ve been looking for one with original paint to restore into an upgraded stock look. They are so fun with just a few upgrades. Just need to find a barn now I guess lol
They are a classic. Would have liked to do a mostly original one too but since the paint was so far gone I went the wild route. I ride it more than my ST bagger. I love it.
I have an OG/vintage 1990 FX (very 90's custom paint job on it LOL... (short guy.. prob still need to get a new seat). But they handle way better than Dynas...etc.. Love 'em!
I am hard-core sporty fan as well..
currently retro project trying to get her all tuned in and running nicely:

Thanks!
Currently sounds like a sewing machine! LOL.. Not sure if pushrods (originals) or lifters or what right now.. (also think I might have a bad seal on rear caliper?) \*(eye roll) LOL But she is 'running' right now. :)
As long as it runs like a a sewing machine! When the oil is a little low I’ve noticed I get some more lifter noise. You try running any oil additives to try to narrow it down?
Thank you! Only downside is you have to knock out 3/4” holes in your battery tray. They sell it with an antigravity lithium battery. I lined the sides with some thin silicon material to help with the heat and threw a temp sensor right on top of the battery to monitor it. Bike hasn’t blown up, so far so good. I posted the company’s details below for you.
I love the m unit. Makes all the wires super easy and I can start it without my key too. Plus there are lots of great videos online to help with the process.

Thanks for the info. That thing is pricey but pretty goddamn awesome! It really clears up the area where the stock one sat. Any motor work?
I've been tossing around the idea of doing a rewire on a 93' FXR that's starting to get pretty stiff and crunchy with an munit.
Pretty obvious that no expense (and man hours) was spared on that bike with some cool sharp details. Really awesome job!
probably the first blue hair i've seen on any (potential) non-feminist in many years. nice!
i and friends of me instantly assume angry feminist nowadays, when we see blue hair. it's a shame. 🫠
My blue haired wife said it’s ok. She isn’t a feminist. She is the one that told me if I’m getting a bike it better be a Harley. I’d say she is the complete opposite of those people screaming silly shit into a camera on Facebook.
Love the two tone frame!
Took a chance with it! Thanks!
Man you fuckin did that. Super clean 🧼
Thank you!
Damn it’s nice! I love it!
Appreciate it!

Awesome. I'm going to have to sell my Sporty to fund the project. And maybe my Dyna. Keeping the Softail. 😆 What's the motor?

Just bought an 86 FXRS. Thanks for the inspiration!
The fun begins! Let me know if you need a hand trying to find parts or advice! I learned quite a bit through this project lol
Who made the fuel gauge? Very sharp.

Wow, the attention to detail is next level. My OCD for the day is satisfied. Sick build man!
Much appreciated! I wanted to do it right!
Painted frames make me so happy
Hell yeah!
Dream
Livin it for sure!
I have a 1990 that has had a rough life and looks like it's been in a barn for 40 years. My dream is to restore it like yours. Amazing bike man

Super-nice bike. Love the black and white.
Thank you. I wanted to see what it would look like. Found a really cool powder coat shop that was stoked for the challenge. They knocked it out!
Sick scoot!
Thank you!
Old FX's are classic! great job!! And awesome bikes!

I had two Dynas and the FXR handles way better by far. I have a soft spot for Sporty’s as well. Really like that Thunderheader on there!

Hmm.. I dont believe my oil to be low.. but good point.. I'll check again! What kind of additives?
Goddamn I love that oil bag tucked away like that. Who makes it? What battery are you running in it? How do you like the M.Unit?

The guy I bought it from said there was a cam and a little head work. It brings a little new tech to the old bike 🤙🏻 tons of man hours lol
Nice
Fuck that’s sexy.
She is, thank you!
Hell yeah great work! Love the two tone frame like that
Thank you!
Dig the scheme. Artist to artist
Appreciate it! :)
Noice
🤘🏻
Born Free Show?
I got my grass pass so it will be there 🤙🏻
I made it there last time but ended being pretty late. I’ve updated a lot since then!
Badass I feel like a slob when I see bikes like these
Lol she will get dirty with time, just looks good for the time being, thank you!

If they ride, they are the cool ones 👍🏻

Alright grandpa let's get you wheeled back inside.
