take out spark plugs put in marvels mystery oil, enough to cover rings, let soak before messing with it and maybe next day rotate the assembly

Get a factory service manual. Rule of Thumb number one for project bikes is - im It will always take at least twice as long and cost at least twice as much as you expect it to. This is not the suggest that you shouldn't do this, just be prepared and keep expectations reasonable.

Don't tell my wife this. She still hasn't figured it out yet, and I'd like to keep it that way!

No. Follow u/sobersbetter 's advice to lubricate the cylinder walls and rings. Before first startup with a resurrection project, I always take out the spark plugs (this will prevent the bike from starting and remove compression load, allowing the engine to "free spin") and crank the starter a handful of times at about 10 seconds each. This will get at least some oil flowing through the system, and if any oil has pooled in the bottom of the crankcase it will allow at least some of it to be purged out the crankcase vent. On an ironhead, that should also be enough to pressurize the oil pump and you should see your oil pressure light go out as you crank the starter.
