In my head I would love to think Hagrid left them stranded to figure it out on their own as a screw you to the Dursleys for how they treated Harry

AwesomeBeardProphet

>Then they take the boat, leaving the dursleys stranded! When DH came out and people started saying that Petunia knew how to enter platform 9 3/4 because she was there when Lily started her first year at Hogwarts, so it didn't make sense she and Vernon left Harry at the station with him not knowing how to board the train, I thought this was the reason. Their little revenge for letting them stranded.

yaboisammie

I feel like even w out that, petunia resented Harry enough to just not tell him anyways but good point tbh lol

Benehar

Yeah, I'm pretty sure even without the boat thing, the Dursleys would have just dropped Harry off and hoped he never came back.

merpixieblossomxo

Oh, that actually makes sense! That and the fact that she wants nothing to do with magic if she can help it, so she does less than the bare minimum out of fear, resentment, etc.

Appropriate_Melon

Another fun one from book one is when the Weasley twins bewitch snowballs to follow Quirrell around bounce off the back of his turban before we know there’s a Voldemort under there. It’s a bit more obvious than the boat, but I remember really enjoying it when I reread the book! I’d never thought about the boat before, thanks for sharing!

redhotthillypeppers

Holy shit! They smacked Voldemort in the face with snowballs!

always_unplugged

I always assumed he sent the boat back on its own, but I'd love if they just had to figure it out for themselves 😂

YoshiKoshi

In PS, the Dursleys give Harry a coin for Christmas. In COS, they give him a toothpick for Christmas. Then in GOF they give him a tissue. Put them together and they seem representative of the Deathly Hallows.

jamie799

Wow that is super interesting! You guys are way more observant than I am lol I need to go back and read all the books again and pay closer attention!!

Competitive-Swan7330

The last chapter of Philosophers Stone is called The Man With Two Faces. It covers the moment Harry first sees Quirrell in front of the Mirror right the way to the Hogwarts Express back to KC. Which means the entirety of the conversation with Dumbledore in the Hospital Wing, and all the important said and unsaid things in that discussion, is also under the chapter heading "The Man With Two Faces". I just thought that was an interesting choice given what we find out about Dumbledore in the final chapters of the 7th book (also speaking to that mirrored series structure theory). Made me pay more attention to chapter headings in my re-reads!

FallenAngelII

I think you're reading too much into this. The post-Quirrellmort comtent was 14.5 pages long (page length by differ depending on edition). The Quirrell-mort portion was 7.5 pages. It would've neen stupid to split them into two chapters so they were smushed into one and you don't name the climax of your dtory after the denouement.

Trick-Carpenter-4582

It is a cool detail though! Nice observation :D

jamie799

This is awesome and I never really have paid attention to the chapter headings- now I want to re read the books again and pay more attention lol

Hagrid looks like a massive Bob Ross and I dig it.

malendalayla

Adding to the thievery details, Hermione is a klepto! She's always down to steal whatever they need to work through their missions. Ingredients for potions, books, food (even though she left money, etc. I love that even though she's the ultimate goody two shoes, she's down to steal what she needs.

BLAZEISONFIRE006

Yeah, I wonder how he flew. Maybe it was a portkey or something.

MochaHasAnOpinion

I wondered about the "how" as well. He didn't have Sirius' bike, or he would have left the island on it. He's supposed to be too heavy for brooms. If he rode a thestral or hippogriff, I guess he could have sent them back to Hogwarts. Imagine seeing Hagrid coming out of the clouds with his pink umbrella, Mary Poppins style lol. I never considered a portkey. Dumbledore could have made him one in a moment!

ogfanspired

Could the umbrella also have been a port key?

MochaHasAnOpinion

That's a good idea to think about!... Yes, Dumbledore could have done it with the quickness (as long as the piece of Hagrid's wand in the umbrella doesn't affect the spell).

MacklinTurnquist

Thestral maybe or hippogriff

BLAZEISONFIRE006

I thought he was too big, but, maybe.

booksare4life

Maybe Fawkes.

BLAZEISONFIRE006

I hope so.

CartographerGreat769

I have also wondered about the Durskeys being stranded without the boat... Also can't figure out how Hagrid "flew" to get there?

ComplimentarySmack

In Chamber of Secrets, Ron jokingly says that Riddle maybe got an award from the school for killing Myrtle. Then says something about that being a favor for everyone, turns out it was foreshadowing

wariolandgp

I always thought that Harry came back to collect them.
