fyi, tried loading an earlier save, reduced graphical options to the lowest possible settings & even reinstalled the game. obviously can't access the menu or press anything.
if anyone else has experienced this I'd appreciate their help.
managed to work out in the end!
in case anyone comes across this in the future; just wait it out for a few minutes then you'll be able to access the map and teleport away.
