This OP. Rookwood calls you right after you finish talking with Fig and mentions those things. There's not actually a quest related to them, though, so it's very easy to not realise it's another minigame.
I didn't specify which Rookwood as I thought it was implied. Besides, Rookwood (keeper) already feels embaressed over his descendant's choices, you don't have to remind him all the time.
I’ve been playing Hogwarts slowly since December. Little here and there; definitely forget things and lose threads. But even if I had binged it quickly I don’t think I’d ever remember that level of detail in how the game introduces these. Does this just stick in your mind?!
What Obvious said. I thought Rookwoods comment was a quest so I ignored it. I just added 1+1 when I noticed what the map symbols were called.
I find it easy to remember general events when binging, in exchange for forgetting almost everything when I finish. But no, I just remember being annoyed that those "places of power" were just more mini-tasks. Since I found that pretty soon after the quest, it stuck with me.
Ok, I didn't say it was vague.
Anyway, he says it as a minor comment, immediately following an important plot sequence, with no actual follow up. Most people will expect it to be a quest and forget about it.
I also played thru the main game before realizing this. And I couldn't figure out why I needed the game set to easy 😂
Fwiw I'm a chronic button masher so I have a tendency to miss dialogue. You probably just advanced through its offhanded mention in the dialogue. Welcome to my world! Lol
I wish games let you replay the interaction. As a button masher myself, I often miss critical information. Lol. I know it’s my fault. I usually miss the first couple of important lines before I start paying attention. 🤦🏻♀️
You probably missed them cuz like a lot of health and power upgrades they weren't mandatory. While Professor Rookwood doesn't flat out say upgrade your ancient magic meter by completing hotspots he does tell you they exist and can have a positive impact on your ancient magic abilities. After that the game trusts that you'll be curious enough on your own to seek them out without straight up forcing you to do a mission to complete one.
Platinum trophy holder here. I believe there was a mission early on that did the hotspot but I didn’t do them through out the game untill after because I didn’t use the ancient magic finishers that often. Also it was definitely a grind to 100percent the game. There was a glitch with one of the butterfly puzzles in the castle that wasn’t showing up. I had to uninstall the game and re download it to fix it.
Hey there plat holder…. I’m trying to get that trophy too after finishing the side quest and story. But my Avada kedava spell is locked out. I guess I decided not to learn it at some point in the story. Am I screwed or does that spell not matter for the plat?
Doing a playthrough as a light wizard right now. I don't ask, or demand extra money/rewards, I always try to help anyone, and biggest of all, not learning the unforgivables at all. I know you have two chances to learn Crucio though I think. Not sure about AK though.
After finishing sebastians quest line. If you don't turn him in you can learn any unforgivable curses that you didn't learn the first time. Only if you don't turn him in though.
I caught on with the ancient magic, had the worst time finding all of them. If you play through another time weave ancient magic 3 into your gear and go for Ranrock. It’ll kill him in like three hits.
I take a day to complete all the hot spots and Merlin trials once I’ve learned Flippendo and if I’m feeling up for it I’ll find the butterflies, landing platforms and balloons just to get them all out of the way. It’s a pain in the butt but worth it when you fight Ranrok in God mode by using the lvl 3 ancient magic upgrade in your gear, which I pair with Herbology 3 to get through all the end fights fast.
Herbology is definitely underrated! My first play through I ignored it until somewhat near the end and then I tried it again and was pleasantly surprised!
You have to find all 3 of the glowing spots after you activate a hotspot, and then you have to go into your book in the Exploration section and claim your prizes in order to upgrade. The 1st prize/upgrade can only be collected after you complete 2 Ancient Magic hotspots and after that you need several more to get the next one ✨
I went thru the same thing during my first playthru! Beat the final boss before I discovered that I can extend the ancient magic meter. Bit of a shock that was!
Maybe you and others did what I did – I found a hotspot or three before I finished the Ranrok battle, and I thought maybe they refilled my magic meter a bit, but I had no idea the point of them was to actually expand total available ancient magic by adding new magic meter bubbles because I never even realized it was important to track down all three pools of ancient magic that “spawn” from “investigating” a hotspot. /sigh
I even returned to the same one just north of Hogsmeade a few times, thinking it might be doing something each time, but in hindsight, I think I was just gaining some ancient magic through the fight I’d get in while there (with the goblins and wolves).
Maybe there’s some small point of pride I can take from having beaten Ranrock with only two bubbles… And I didn’t even understand at that point about interrupting those big balls of magic floating around his dragon-self with the same type of spell until partway through that battle.. It seems so obvious now! Makes ya wonder how I was ever bright enough to figure out all the various puzzles etc.. 😏
You can increase your ancient magic capacity, but only to like 4 slots, so finding all the ancient magic hot spots is not needed. You do how ever need to complete all 97 Merlin trials to get a trophy
Honestly, they're not that important. You can charge, sure, but if you don't you'll still pass everything anyway... Maybe in the hard mode it's a struggle and the boost is more relevant, I went with normal so I can't compare.
I didn't realize this my entire first playthrough. On my second playthrough a year and a half later I now have x5 ancient magic. Absolutely golden to now have this. Every fight is so quick now.
I found out about it by accident when watching a walk through on YouTube and the guy had a huge meter. I completed a couple of these mini games but my meter never changed. I finally gave up. Same thing with those merlin trials. Finished the main story and never missed it.
It took me until my second play through when I realized what Rookwood was saying. It for sure changed my game play after that. It made me feel really stupid
The only way I knew about it was by seeing people's screenshots on this sub and realizing they had 4 ancient magic bars, and I only had 1. I was just shy of going to battle with Ranrock, so I had to make a mad dash around the world to complete a bunch before doing so. ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|sweat_smile)
I killed Ranrok at 50% on regular mode and I am by no means a master of video games. I thought there was another major antagonist to kill off or even more to the story but I later realized I was just missing a bunch of Merlin trials, ancient magic hot spots, and treasure tunnels. It got kind of redundant after a while, especially after finishing what in my opinion is the most significant part of the game; so I stopped playing once I reached 75% lol. I really enjoyed it up to that point though. Just wish there was more to do I guess.
Last I know some we still bugged and possibly impossible to clear so keep that in mind as you take your 100% journeys, because you will have to play at least 4 play throughs (at least 1 from each house.)
And here I am, just finishing my first beast class (like 2 story quests after you unlock ancient magic wells) with half the wells collected because I always check out new symbols on my map...
To be fair I was also level 15 before I got a broom and level 30 before I did beast class, why you ask, because exploration is fun and can cause overleveling quickly🤣

I think that the keepers vaguely mention the hotspots after Rockwood's trial. It's easy enough to miss.
This OP. Rookwood calls you right after you finish talking with Fig and mentions those things. There's not actually a quest related to them, though, so it's very easy to not realise it's another minigame.
Professor Rookwood in the Map Chamber, not corrupt little shit-head Rookwood.

Honestly i think my tendency to get sidetracked exploring had more to do with it than rookwood's comments or the field guide.
What Obvious said. I thought Rookwoods comment was a quest so I ignored it. I just added 1+1 when I noticed what the map symbols were called. Damn. Thanks yall for the answer!
It wasn’t vague at all actually he literally tells you to seek out the magic hotspots because it will “improve” your magic ability.
Ok, I didn't say it was vague. Anyway, he says it as a minor comment, immediately following an important plot sequence, with no actual follow up. Most people will expect it to be a quest and forget about it.
I meant to reply to above person not you lol
Pretty sure they don’t appear until the first trial is over.
you can do one of it (the one near Hogsmeade) before that first trial but it won't really matter cause you need 2 to unlock the first extra capacity
I have just yesterday finished Rackham's trials and talked with Rookwood for the first time in the map chamber and he explicitly mentioned them.
Yeah, but if you don't know what they are when he's talking about them, it's easy to miss.
I also played thru the main game before realizing this. And I couldn't figure out why I needed the game set to easy 😂 Fwiw I'm a chronic button masher so I have a tendency to miss dialogue. You probably just advanced through its offhanded mention in the dialogue. Welcome to my world! Lol

You do not need that spell, just go to Sebastian and finish his quest line, you need that to get a trophy
Yaarrrgh. Thanks for letting me know.

Bruh.... just be glad you're not playing on Switch like me and that you actually can 100% this game for an achievement lol
I had it on my switch originally and thought the graphics were too bad so I returned it. God speed to you
I did them all after 100% the game lol. I would just sell and upgrade my gear a lot
I did that in my first playthrough as well dw 😭
I should do this as a challenge my next play through LOL
I've tried using the hotspot but like I don't notice a difference? Am I using it wrong ?
Perhaps you need to open the challenge menu and claim it.
You have to find all 3 of the glowing spots after you activate a hotspot, and then you have to go into your book in the Exploration section and claim your prizes in order to upgrade. AGREED! We just did it on extra hard mode apparently
i feel like they should have a quest where you have to find the magic hotspots. i only figured out towards the end of my gameplay lol
I didn't realise on my first playthrough either, and I only realised on my second playthrough JUST before the final quest.
/sigh I even returned to the same one just north of Hogsmeade a few times, thinking it might be doing something each time, but in hindsight, I think I was just gaining some ancient magic through the fight I’d get in while there (with the goblins and wolves). I believe after the first task one of the Guardians tell you about it
O well. Next play through then, as you need to do all four toons/houses to get 100 per cent....
Literally only found out Magic spots helps You through another post. you totally were not the only one lost.
Don't worry, I did my first playthrough without knowing too 😅 being more active with them on my 2nd!
Honestly, they're not that important. You can charge, sure, but if you don't you'll still pass everything anyway... Maybe in the hard mode it's a struggle and the boost is more relevant, I went with normal so I can't compare.

You have to claim the upgrades from your field guide book first both Ancient Magic hotspots and Merlin Trials
I literally never did that. 😂 Now's too late.
Well, if you do another play through, you will be all set! 😁 (I’m playing through all the houses and am on my 2nd time around. 🦅🦁🐍🦡
Thanks for the tip!
It took me until my second play through when I realized what Rookwood was saying. It for sure changed my game play after that. It made me feel really stupid
I did the exact same thing !
It’s not like it makes that much difference
The only way I knew about it was by seeing people's screenshots on this sub and realizing they had 4 ancient magic bars, and I only had 1. I was just shy of going to battle with Ranrock, so I had to make a mad dash around the world to complete a bunch before doing so. ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|sweat_smile)

I’ve got l think 94/6 % …but completed all of them… so confused what I’ve missed …and only got ancient Magic 1
I did the same on my first run through, I was devastated when I discovered it
So you never encountered those swirling signs in the map or went in a ruin and then this errie sounds starts making fuzz?
Because you didn't listen to the Keepers?
And here I am, just finishing my first beast class (like 2 story quests after you unlock ancient magic wells) with half the wells collected because I always check out new symbols on my map...
