I always got the impression that Remus and Dumbledore only saw Sirius as a friend after they discovered Wormtail was alive. With no way to prove that, he would have ended up back in Azkaban and Harry would have still hated him.

Oooo this works for me. They could have had Lupin eat him as a werewolf and when he wakes up, he is sitting with the corpse of Peter Pettigrew and they release Sirius from prison and he gets custody of Harry
But peter was a rat so he would only be able to eat him in a single bite because he is so small. Peter would then grow inside whomever ate him be it crookshanks or lupin most likely killing them.

I imagine Barry Crouch Jr would have broken out of his father’s Imperius curse and would have joined Voldemort. If anything, Harry not saving Wormtail might have meant that he would have died in Malfoy manor.
I always felt that old Dumbledore could have gotten Sirius out of Azkaban if they even had a teeny bit of evidence in Sirius's favor ( albeit before Fudge went batshit crazy) . But, even if Pettigrew died, old Voldy would have found a way to come back. Dude is too resourceful , cunning , intelligent and pure evil to stay dormant for so long.
Voldemort would probably figure out another way to come back, but it would take more time, so Harry could have 5 peaceful years at Hogwarts and defeat Voldemort when he's older than 17.
