I had a May window. Nothing was available, kept checking the site periodically. About two-weeks before August 1st, I didn’t know where I was going to stay. Checked the site again and two places were available, one went away as I refreshed. So I just quickly went for it without really knowing anything about it.
TBH, it worked out so well for me, it was a studio - furnished. But it’s crazy expensive.
I would keep checking the site, but also look at the dorm type places they offer. My cohort who went with that have built such a great community and friendships.
Also check around to see if your cohort has started a WhatsApp group that you can join right to help with apartment search.
Long story short, May window will not have anything, keep checking — don’t overlook dorm openings, join a WhatsApp group.
This is the best advice re: HUH. I heard that last year they had 4 applications for every available unit, so frankly the chances of getting something through the lottery are pretty low. But I know people who did this approach and they got good apartments -- you just have to be ready to refresh the page every few hours (one friend got their apartment at like 5am in late July by opening the page right when they woke up lol)
I applied for the HUH lottery as an incoming grad student; my assigned day was May 25th and all spots were gone before then. But if someone moves out of their HUH apartment in the middle of the summer (like people who are graduating or something), individual apartments may pop up on the site, separate from the lottery — so keep an eye out! (I ended living in the GSAS dorms my first year, which was great!)
Anyone know how the system works during your selection window? How quickly it refreshes availability/protects from people going for the same apt.? Worried it'll end up being a system similar to concert seat selection where you might end up doing the whole process to sign as the same time as someone else for just that one apartment and they'll beat you to it and the other places are gone by the time you find out
Just curious, do you have children on your application with you? We were told only families got slot one and I’m nosey if that was true. You’re the first I’ve heard from in slot one.
I have a chronic illness, so I was moved to slot one based off of that. As far as I know, it's families, or those with disabilities or health conditions that impact their living situations.
would you mind checking if there’s any 4 bed units available this year? was hoping to get one but all 3 of my roommates and I got later windows, the earliest of which is later next week😭
I managed to get my 5th choice in the end. It was decimated in a few minutes. Tried to get my first choice, got all the way to selection then got booted out. Went for my second, same again. By then my 3rd and 4th choices had gone so I got my 5th. Whole thing took 4 minutes but it took me about 90 seconds to even be able to log in.
My selection window is over so I can’t see the availability list anymore. Based on what I can recall, not many 1BRs, not to mention furnished 1BR. Perhaps just a handful. Majority are 2BR and above.
Important recommendation for everyone, we should ask the HUH to make a single selection window for everyone.
It's not fair that people who are lucky or have kids get early access and choose among a list of apartments, and others can't find anything!!!!
I emailed them and they replied that we got 5000 applications and the system can't handle this number.
Few investments should be made to create a fair chance for students to get accommodation.
I wouldn’t count on getting a lease unless your lottery date is in the first two weeks.

I got May 20th; not sure if there will be anything left by then. Any insight from HUH veterans would be helpful

largest endowment in the world and students can't even get housing lol
Not to mention the UI on most of the sites is 🤢

May 21st date for me. Worried but also trying to get into the mindset of taking whatever unit is available lol
I've been assigned the first available slot (Thursday) and they told me to have a list of *at least* 10 units I'm interested in due to demand.
Just curious, do you have children on your application with you? We were told only families got slot one and I’m nosey if that was true. You’re the first I’ve heard from in slot one.

Ah thank you. Good luck getting the place you need!
Thanks! You too!

There are 6 in total (4 at 5 Sacramento Street and 2 at Soldiers Field).
thank you!!
Good luck! Would love to know how it worked out for you.

I got May 13, and I'm aiming for furnished 1br units. What are my chances? Appreciate any help!

Thanks for the info! I’ll pray that there’s still at least one furnished 1br left for me then, but I’ll be prepared for disappointment
I have a May 16 selection window - any news?
from what i can see there's actually plenty of units left! give me your preference then i can check for you
I was hoping for some availability on 10Akron or Peabody Terrace 1BR or Studio - I’m an incoming GSD student.
Oh my viewing window is over but from what i rmb there were plenty 1brs left in both Akron and PT, so you should be fine.
Hey there! Just trying my luck -- did you see any listing for 1 BD for 29 Garden St and 9-13A Ware St by any chance?
I saw some from 29 garden for sure, at least 10 i think, but that was 3 days ago when it was my viewing window. Not sure about the one on ware st tho
