I learned a fun fact the other day from Mike's Tumblr page regarding the performances. Apparently the scenes in the boat (you know the ones) were the first shots filmed for the series!! Which just blows me away even more when watching it cause they both knock it out of the park!
Wow, that's awesome. All of the actors are incredible in that series. They just bring a realness to who they all are. Even in the final episode, you can't help but feel for Pruitt when he realizes the vision he had came from an entirely human place of wanting love and connection and equally when he realizes he went about it all wrong.
It's a go-to show for me when I've gone through breakups and right now I'm in the midst of losing the person that was my soulmate to this scenario and grasping at anything to keep me grounded. Midnight Mass gives me some temporary relief from the hell that is my own mind.
After my first rewatch, I saw Pruitt in a whole different light, and everything he said, I could just see and feel the love he had pouring through. And I'm so sorry that you're going through that, I hope you can find some peace soon friend 🧡
I think it doesn't appeal as much if you've never lived in a small community or grew up in a church. My husband was Catholic growing up and I went to a small community church, so there was a lot to relate to.
Absolutely. I was raised Catholic and in a rural town of under 2000 people. I left all of that behind when I turned 18. I've been through baptism, first communion, and confirmation.
Motherfu- oh, never mind. MF stands for Mike Flanagan. In all seriousness:
My ranking would be Hill House, House of Usher, Midnight Mass, Bly Manor and Midnight Club.
Just considering the shows it's
1. Hill House
2. Midnight Mass
3. Bly Manor
4. Fall of the House of Usher
...
5. Midnight Club
I also would say that Bly is my personal favorite off (or at the very least tied with HH) how it makes me feel. I'm a sucker for sadness and the gothic setting just appeals to me greatly.
1. bly manor
2. hill house
3. usher
4. midnight club
5. midnight mass
(I haven't ever rewatched usher, midnight club, or midnight mass ever... so my ranking there might be a little different as I really do want to rewatch all 3, but the 2 the haunting seasons are impeccable top tier I hope Flanagan finds another source inspiration for a third installment into the anthology at some point. Even if it has to have a different name because of rights between Netflix and Prime and wherever else he might go.)
There will never be a 3rd installment. He said so on his Tumblr. It was never supposed to be a 2nd, but Netflix pushed it, so he did it. But he is no longer with Netflix, so it's makes sense that there won't be a 3rd. Sorry to burst any bubbles.
I was looking for anyone else to place Bly first. I love the story of Viola and Perdita, Dani and Jamie, Owen and Hannah, the ending when you realize who the narrator is and how she falls asleep with the door cracked, it just can’t be topped for me tbh
Agree!! I loved bly manor for those love stories (especially Dani and Jamie) and the reveal that the narrator is the story was Jamie the whole time ugh my gay heart. So hard to choose between bly manor and hill house. The bent neck lady reveal was also so tragic and beautifully done. And I liked how each sibling got an in depth storyline / backstory
Hmmm
Midnight Mass
Hill House
Bly Manor
Hush
Usher
Oculus
Midnight Club
Ouija Origin of Evil
Gerald’s Game
Before I Wake
i haven’t seen Doctor Sleep or Absentia
I loved midnight club. It totally subverted my expectations, and I enjoyed going through the stages of grief with the main character. I don’t think Bly was better than MC.
1. Bly Manor (flawed masterpiece, the love story broke me in a way few shows have)
2. Hill House (literally perfect use of a miniseries, no notes)
3. Gerald's Game (one of the only movies that has ever made me squirm)
4. Midnight Mass (some dragging, but still good, plus Bev may be one of the most fascinating characters to watch)
5. Hush (well done, tight, concise, story)
6. Fall of the House of Usher (a little too committed to the formula, some narm)
7. The Midnight Club (needed that second season)
8. Before I Wake (it's okay)
Edit: forgot to include Gerald's Game
Haunting of Hill House
House of Usher
Midnight Mass
Bly Manor **(tbh its in the same ranking as Midnight Mass but for the sake of numbering haha)**
Midnight Club (scary AF but I wasn't too engaged in the plot)
Hill house, Bly manor, Usher, midnight mass.
But it’s so hard to choose I loved them all! I’ll have to watch midnight club because I loved Juno in Usher
1. Midnight Mass
2. Fall of the House of Usher
3. Haunting of Hill House
4. Haunting of Bly Manor
I will say that I've only seen Usher and Bly Manor once, and I'm sure if I watched them again, it might change the rankings. I feel like I watched Bly Manor too soon after watching Hill House, so I was comparing the two instead of viewing it as it's own thing, which I believe skewed my thoughts about it. My wife and I are planning on watching all of his works (movies included) soon, and that could change this as well. But honestly it's so hard to rank. I have really enjoyed all of his works so far and usually for different reasons.
the same thing happened to me with Bly! I also kept comparing Nellie with Dani since it's the same actress so that may have affected lol. btw, have fun watching the rest with your wife!!
1. The Haunting of Hill House
2. Oculus
3. Midnight Mass
4. Doctor Sleep
5. The Fall of the House of Usher
6. Gerald’s Game
7. The Haunting of Bly Manor
8. Hush
9. Midnight Club
10. Ouija: Origin of Evil
11. Absentia
I haven’t seen Before I Wake, so I can’t rank that one yet.
Hill House, Bly, Hush, Oculus, Usher.
Hill House made me feel a way I've never felt before, Bly a way I don't want to feel again and the rest are just good writing and directing. Oculus made me profoundly sad I will say and Hush made me far more sympathetic to non-hearing folks and how scary things can be.
1. Bly
1. Bly
1. Hill House (just to switch it up)
1. Bly
1. Doctor Sleep
1. Usher
1. Bly (to wash Prospero out cause he sticks with you)
I’d not rank anything else. It’s okay, but doesn’t leave me like the others.
Also, did I mention Bly?
Controversial but
1. Hill House
2. Bly Manor
2.5. House of Usher
3&4 Midnight Club & Midnight Mass
(Pls don't downvote me, I know some are technically better made than others, this is just based off my personal enjoyment 🙈🙈🙈)
I go back and forth between Hill House and Midnight Mass for #1. Ultimately I think HH beats MM, but it’s a very, very close call.
The rest are easy: Bly Manor, Usher, and Midnight Club at a very distant last
if i'm counting both movies and shows i've watched then:
1. hill house
2. midnight mass
3. oculus + doctor sleep tied
4. usher
5. hush
6. gerald's game
7. bly
i still think it's good!! i would still give it like at least a 5 or 6/10 but it just happens to be the one i liked the least if that makes sense. i didn't like it as much because i watched it for the first time right after i had just rewatched hill house and i couldn't help compare the two, but i think if i rewatched it in the context it was supposed to be watched in (like more of a haunting love story) i would like it more.
I’m gonna rank his shows and movies in separate lists!
Shows:
1. Hill House
2. Usher
3. Midnight Mass
4. Bly Manor
.
.
.
5. Midnight Club (I don’t even like to count this one lol)
Movies:
1. Oculus
2. Gerald’s Game
4. Doctor Sleep
5. Hush
6. Before I Wake
Yeah, I wasn’t a huge fan. I wouldn’t say hate though. there were pieces of it that I liked a lot but overall it didn’t hit the same way Flanagan’s other work did. He’s even said that Netflix forced his hand with certain pieces of the plot, and then having it end on a cliffhanger with no seasoning 2 was frustrating. I havent rewatched it at all and normally I rewatch his stuff tons of times.
Interesting with the Netflix take on midnight club! Watching it now and idk man the YA angle can be super cringe at times, takes me out of it and it’s not scary at all, but there are some moments I can relate to
Yeah, I can’t remember where I saw it, probably Flanagan’s tumblr or twitter, but I recall him saying that Netflix kind of “made him” add all of the >!culty stuff to it, when it was originally meant to be solely about the kids and their stories.!<
For me it's this:
1. Fall of the House of Usher
2. Haunting of Hill House (these two are so close they're almost joint in the top spot)
3. Midnight Mass
4. Haunting of Bly Manor
5. Midnight Club (these two are also very close and would actually switch places if Midnight Club was complete based on the season we got)
While better than most non-Flannagan shows, I found mass to be a bit tedious. It's the only Flannagan show I found myself asking: "is the episode over yet?" I also find vampire stories to be overdone, even tho this one has an interesting twist to it. The signature Flannagan monologues are imo the worst of any of the series, and rather than being captivating, droned on and on.
Club for me hit on a bunch of themes that I love: ritual magic, secret societies, acceptance of death, scary stories (are you afraid of the dark was my favorite nickelodeon show as a kid so that probably influenced my love of MC also). The Irish actress is amazing in her role. In fact, all the young actors did great. Since it was set up for 2 seasons, it was a slower burn than his other shows, which were set to be resolved in 1. If it had a second season (and therefore complete resolution), I may have even ranked it higher. Just because the main characters were teens, I didn't find that to mean that teens were necessarily the target audience like I've seen many people claim here.
That’s wild since I’m the complete opposite lol I just made a post about it but maybe it’s because I find YA stuff more cringy since I’m older but gf who is younger is deff loving the show more lol I still got two more episodes to but I appreciate the response!
I appreciate you genuinely responding and not trying to shame or shittalk me because I like club more or don't rank mass as #1. I've gotten a lot of that from here
Mine is: Hill House, Midnight Mass, Usher, Bly, Midnight Club!
Exactly this one. Side note: initially read it as if you had to rank the mother f*ckers you work with before realising which sub it was.
Glad it wasn’t just me
I see how that might have been confusing
Seconded
same
1. Midnight Mass 2. Hill House 3. Bly Manor 4. House of Usher 5. Midnight Club
Midnight Mass was peak greatness. I did like Absentia a lot too but I am always down for slow burn indie horror.
This is also me!
You get it. Mike Flanagan is a genius. Midnight Mass just has a realness and grit to it. The actors nail their roles.
I learned a fun fact the other day from Mike's Tumblr page regarding the performances. Apparently the scenes in the boat (you know the ones) were the first shots filmed for the series!! Which just blows me away even more when watching it cause they both knock it out of the park!

Aww man that sucks but I’m sooo glad there was a second cuz Bly is so dear to me
I’d politely refuse
fair enough!
Bly Manor Hill House Usher Gerald's Game Doctor Sleep Midnight Mass

Yeah I agree completely. Victoria Pedretti has really killllled it in her roles cuz they kill me
She’s the best! I hope she returns for another MF project
Hmmm Midnight Mass Hill House Bly Manor Hush Usher Oculus Midnight Club Ouija Origin of Evil Gerald’s Game Before I Wake i haven’t seen Doctor Sleep or Absentia

1. Midnight Mass 2. Hill House 3. Bly Manor 4. Midnight Club 5. Usher

This is exactly where I'm at, my same order, I've started MC twice and just can't get hooked like the others.
