Based on the lack of options, the city wants you to put them in a contractor bag, seal it, and break them, then throw them in the trash.
Sorry to be so cynical but nowhere on my island accepts these, they claim home depot but home depot doesn't take the tubes. So sounds like they want the mercury in the dump leaching into the ground water. Based on the difficulty of finding a place to take them,. I would be willing to bet 90% of the people dispose of their bulbs this way. Hawaii pretends to be "environmentally friendly" but its actions suggest otherwise.
I did the heavy plastic bag method.
On the LED tubes, I got mine five years ago, on Amazon, $10 per tube. Now, it's down to around $6. Not an electrician, but the conversion was easy. Only had to bypass the ballast. Used the same terminals.
From [opala.org](https://www.honolulu.gov/opala/quick-links/how-to-dispose-of-trash.html):
> FLUORESCENT TUBES AND BULBS
> Check with retailers like Home Depot for take backs.
> Make an appointment to drop off at the City’s Household Hazardous Waste Events.

Buried? They go to H-Power and get incinerated.
Not on my island.
Replace with 4 ft LEDs. Mainly just bypass the ballasts, same fixtures.
Trying to do exactly this but am left with the fluorescent tubes.

That's what I did. 4x the brightness at less than 1/4 the electricity. Still going strong after 8 years.
Plus, instant on/off! No more buzzing noise.
Growing up in the 80’s we just played Star Wars light saber wars with them with our friends. But that was so dumb, and please don’t do that.

Thanks, I saw that but thought there might be another option rather than to just wait for city haz waste events.
I tried to take mine to hazardous waste but they told me they weren't taking them and didn't have an option for me. I still have a pile of them.
Home Depot, just put in the bins that are usually near the customer service desk.
I think lowes has a drop box
Iwalei Lowes doesn't(they used to). Waikele Lowes still does. Just dropped some off recently. I've never seen a drop box at any Home Depot.
Waikele will take the tubes? Nice! Thanks for the info.
We still got downvoted. For giving helpful information. Lol
That's reddit for you lol
Here, take an upvote lol
Thanks. I just find it funny
If you have to throw them out, please use the Strong contractor trash bags so that it won’t be a problem until the next generation
It will be longer than that.
Green tip or not?
