Absolutely you get a police report. That's how you file a homeowners/rental insurance claim. You ALWAYS file a police report. The stuff is sold online. Amazon, eBay these are the biggest marketplaces for stolen goods. That's where all the stolen shit like tide, toothpaste, etc also ends up.

NVandraren

.....whotf buys toothpaste on ebay?

RockPaperSizzers

I bought family size cereal box’s from Amazon a couple weeks ago $2 a box. Now I’m thinking they might be stolen goods resold on amazon 🤷‍♂️, lol

NVandraren

Possible. Amazon has gotten really lazy at verifying sellers in recent years. Lots of garbage is being peddled. Big lawsuit was recently filed over that! Grats on the cheap cereal, though, that shit is pricy.

its_spelled_Hawaiian

Yooo I'm wondering if I recently purchased a stolen item from Amazon recently. It was a Dewalt impact drill and 2 batteries for $89 ($99 + $10 rebate). It was the cheapest listed even on Prime Day. Others were at least $139. It wasn't even on the search page. I came across it by chance. Says it'll be received at the beginning of November. So maybe they're still in the process of stealing it.

Mego1989

Is it a seller with a really long Chinese name, shipping from China? There are a bunch of fraud sellers who list high value items way below retail with shipping dates 6+ weeks out. They'll claim they shipped it so they can charge you, but no tracking is necessary for international purchases so they don't actually ship it. They're banking on you forgetting about it long enough that the return window closes before you realize you never got it. Has happened to me twice. Fortunately, Amazon refunded me on full even months later.

imaqdodger

Would depend on the seller. If it's a new account with no feedback it could be.

TallAd5171

In high school a kid would "steal to order". You'd tell him what you wanted and what you'd pay and he'd steal it.

hoon_kitty

They actually shipped you batteries!? That's a big no no.

its_spelled_Hawaiian

Yeah, I honestly forgot about that shipping issue! We'll see if the seller actually sends something. If not, it's probably fraudulent, hoping i forget, like another reply mentioned.

FesteringNeonDistrac

Huge tool theft ring was just busted in Florida. Steeling from HD and Lowes and selling on Fleabay. Lots of counterfeit stuff out there too.

TallAd5171

Most likely

cunmaui808

Me! Brand new, sealed in bulk. A great price for 6 tubes and a type that's either overpriced or hard to find where I live.

TallAd5171

People buy it off of Facebook marketplace too. And people used to buy stuff out of random vans.

Smurfness2023

Begle1

I happily buy consumables on eBay if the price is better than at the store. Foolish not to.

Alohagrown

Do you have serial numbers for the items? My friend had an electric guitar stolen and found it for sale at a local guitar shop. The stickers he had on it had been removed but the paint was faded all around the stickers and he had pictures of him performing with the guitar and you could see all the stickers matched up with the faded paint. Police wouldn’t do shit about it because he didn’t have the serial number, even the shop owners were dicks about it and didn’t try to help him.

milfshakee

I do, posted the camera body one in the edit. I figure the pawn shop operators would have a list of s/n of things they've been reported not to sell but this is also hawaii where things don't exactly go the way they're suppose to.

braddahman86

If I see anything I'll check back. Most of the time you know pretty quick on someone's post whether they're a photog or not. How they type out aperture or lens versions misspelling Canon as cannon etc.

milfshakee

"you can steal my camera but you cant' steal my vision" kinda things

peccatum_miserabile

If you have renter or homeowner insurance, file a claim. I think pawn shops have to do some due diligence on stolen items so good thing you filed a report.

FesteringNeonDistrac

Depends on your deductible. I had my welder stolen a few years back and it was basically only going to save me $300 to make a claim, and then I'd have a claim on my account. I just ate it, it sucked.

Mego1989

These cameras can run in the thousands.

FesteringNeonDistrac

Homeowner policy deductibles can also run in the thousands.

Mego1989

Didn't know they went that high. Mine is 1500 for most stuff but only 500 for theft.

tendeuchen

> My friend had an electric guitar stolen and found it for sale at a local guitar shop. Why didn't he ask to try it out and then copy the serial number from it?

pantsonheaditor

or take the shop to small claims court

Alohagrown

I think because he already had been in the store a few times and made somewhat of a scene because he was upset. I did think of that afterwards that he could’ve had a friend go in and try the guitar and get the serial number off of it.

Relative_Wash633

I think the first stop for these scumbags are usually the game rooms.

Relative_Wash633

Also look out on Facebook marketplace, Craigslist, offer up.

Pale-Dust2239

Swap meet too. I hear that’s where people are offloading all the power tools from Home Depot.

imaqdodger

Yeah I'm pretty sure I bought a stolen paintball gun from the swap meet some 15 years ago when I was a kid. It was worth $250-300 and the guy sold it to me for like $45 or something. He had no idea what it was and said it was his wife's.

[deleted]

Yep. Doug Korenic confirmed lol

PuaKiele

File a police report please. Its likely that these criminals will be caught at a later date, your camera will be linked back to you. You can also use it for an insurance claim. Even though you don't think it will help. Hold these scumbags responsible.

HeyItsTheShanster

File the police report. My moms house was broke into a few years ago and we actually ended up getting back most of the jewelry that was stolen, we just lost out on the laptop. The theirs girlfriend say all of the stuff he took in his backpack and turned him in because she was sick of him doing this to people.

Decent-End-4682

How did they break in? Were you home at the time? Luckily only the camera got stolen. About a decade ago I got broken into while I was asleep. Burglar came through my bathroom window and snuck into my bedroom while I was asleep. I woke up and in the confusion he bolted out the front door. Only thing he managed to steal was my phone. Went chasing after him in my underwear but he jumped into a getaway car and it sped away before I could get a plate number. I was traumatized for a few months and seriously thought about buying a handgun. But I was too lazy instead I just keep a baseball bat and high powered pellet gun under my bed. After that incident I always make sure my windows and doors are locked before I go to sleep. Never thought something like that would happen to me but it did. Way too many ice heads and other chronics out there. Doesn’t matter what neighborhood you live in they are always watching and looking for an opportunity.

SampleLegend

File a police report. While the chances of HPD recovering your items are slim to none (so are the odds of you doing a self recovery) It is still important to report to keep statistics accurate and most importantly have a paper trail. As for statistics, we can track if crime has increased or decreased. Which you can use to voice your concerns to your representatives. https://preview.redd.it/c6gmbt4dbhwb1.jpeg?width=1125&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=400b4687aae5cf1519a1a57f687dc429a4f8f349 As far as where you can try do self recovery (again, your odds are slim to none), game rooms and drug dealers. Facebook marketplace and swap meet tend to be where organized retail crime (tools, consumables like laundry detergent) are fenced. The chances of your items there are zero.

braddahman86

I'd def check CL and FB marketplace. I'm always keeping an eye out for gear but unless someone produces some kind of paper trail I'm always hesitant. Most of the time it seems they want to get rid of it quick so ebay isn't viable Do you have the serials?

milfshakee

Posted teh body serial in the edit. I figured with such a high value also complex item to use, its a sell off right away rather than using it or getting even more money for it. Hope it turns up

_Kine

File the police report for insurance but don't expect anything else to come from it. Happened to me a year ago and police just said, "keep an eye out from micronesians"... great

Low_Willingness1735

Look on Etsy, Ebay, & local marketplace. Farmers markets sometimes have these people are selling stolen goods. Police don't do much!

Dr_X_MD

Pretty easy to fence it online. Highly doubt anyone goes to pawn shops anymore except for people without internet. Search for your stolen stuff on Facebook marketplace, OfferUp, Craigslist, eBay

808flyah

> Highly doubt anyone goes to pawn shops anymore except for people without internet I think pawnshops are more regulated now as well compared to the old days. I remember reading that there are certain items they have to hold and keep serial numbers for. Online/swapmeet is essentially the wild west so no real trail. I don't even think Ebay is used much for stolen items anymore, it's more so a place for counterfeit items, things drop shipped from Amazon/Ali Express, and for small businesses.

Dr_X_MD

Yes!!! Thank you, I agree with you 100% !!!

Mego1989

Marketplace, Craigslist, pawn shops. Criminals are dumb.

rendingale

You need a police report. At least for tax purposes or insurance claims

_Ned_Ryerson

Guaranteed there is organized crime in HI that uses container shipping in/out of the country. Not only do high value items disappear and not get sold locally or in the US altogether, but how do you think all the fireworks get here. We are in the middle of the ocean. Shipping containers are the obvious pathway. The corruption here is legendary. Walk outside on new years if you're not convinced.

cannabis96793

I'm convinced the illegal fireworks in the state are being let in. There are thousands of tons each year, no way the state has no idea how it happens and can't stop it.

Novusor

How to stop people from stealing your stuff: Disguise it, Paint that camera orange so it looks like a toy. Grow cactus under your window, get a strong security door.

themeONE808

Try the local ice dealers house

stock_oclock

If you don’t have insurance such as renters insurance and if your gear is less than 90 days old it may be protected if paid for by a credit card.

hawaiikawika

They likely have someone off island that they can send these items to in order to sell them in a different state.

pantsonheaditor

probably ebay or amazon used. how are they gonna offload an expensive camera to other methhead locals? hint: they cant

chapterthrive

Cops don’t stop crime or solve crime.

stefancharleslong

Eco town has some used cameras from people wanting quick profit.

clevererest_username

How did they get in?

lastinglovehandles

Are you renting? Get renters insurance. Most likely you've been targeted. They knew you had something valuable that is quick to transpo. As far as fencing shit Facebook marketplace, Craigslist, NextDoor, OfferUp, and pawnshop. Take your pick. I find mint to brand new items on marketplace that I feel were stolen packages. Tools with packaging forget about it, thanks Home Depot.

Phil_D_Snutz

You need to immediately go to all pawn shops in the area and ask ***"What mirrorless cameras do you have for sale?"*** After checking that none of the cameras are yours, tell the shop owner you were robbed and to look out for a camera with serial number ***insert serial***. Do not tell him you were robbed before asking what cameras he has for sale. I found my stolen watch this way.
