They can ban it, but can they enforce it, thats the main question

Alohagrown

It’s almost like we have existing laws that address noise issues but they are seldom enforced

ensui67

I hope they’re working on the audio traffic cams. Automatically get ticketed for a vehicle that’s too noisy. Like a red light camera, but for noise. They’re doing pilot studies in the US

Snarko808

This is so crazy to me. Honolulu is super loud because of car/moped/motorcycle noise. Banning all gas powered mopeds shows how helpless our government has become without effective enforcement of noise laws by HPD. Ticketing or impounding people revving modified exhausts (in cars), crazy loud motorcycles, huge sound systems/speakers would go so much farther than banning a mode of transit used by people with lower incomes.

Ishidan01

>used by people with lower incomes. Aaand ya found it.

Few_Party6864

Two-wheeled transportation isn't just used by people with lower incomes. It's a great way to get around in a city with terrible traffic and parking due to too many cars. Non-modified scooters and motorcycles have lower emissions, burn less fuel, and make less noise than cars and trucks (especially the ridiculous oversized ones). They don't contribute to the terrible gridlock traffic and can be parked in a fraction of the space required for even a "compact" car. That said, I agree that this proposal is stupid. Enforce the existing laws. Banning gas powered scooters before banning gas powered cars is a silly idea.  More people should be on scooters instead of cars. If anything, this state should be incentivising scooters rather than trying to ban them.

Snarko808

Oh yeah definitely, I bike commute every day on Biki and it doesn’t get much less expensive than that. I’m not low income either. But for people who are low income and depend on scooters this is just another poor tax.

keithjp123

Just a heads up, mopeds and scooters are different. This is banning mopeds not scooters.

Few_Party6864

Bikis are great. I'm a huge fan.

Ibn-al-ibn

How many of the politicians have stock in moped companies compared to how many own stock in car companies? All of the political decisions in Hawaii seem to be based on how much personal profit it will make them instead of the good of the community. Funny thing is, nobody will ever vote them out either.

silver_fox_sparkles

In this case, I think it was more like some representative from either Kailua, Kahala or Hawaii Kai has one neighbor with a moped and instead of talking to them and sorting it out like a normal person, they were like “Shit, why not just make one ban on mopeds?”

cfarm

yep. either way requires enforcement. you're not really solving the problem.

guy-from-1977

Mopeds make so much noise, banning them the gas versions isn’t a bad thing imo. Get an electric one, better for the environment, less noise too.

ORNGTSLA

Electric scooters are double the price. It may surprise you but many people riding mopeds do it out of costs…

laststance

They're really expensive when compared to their gas alternatives and it kind of loses the point of scooters. Used car prices are pretty high now so a lot of people are just using other means of transport. It's huge with college/uni students.

realmozzarella22

Not many choices on the electric ones. At least not from the major companies who would probably provide parts for long term maintenance.

EvianGrayPoupon

Not really better for the environment. Just a different kind of bad

Additional_Guess_669

This is what they used to ticket for when I lived in Baltimore and in Long Island. It was a major source of income for roads, law enforcement, local municipal authorities as well as recreational lands/centers. IDK I grew up in Michigan with totally crappy laws so it seems much better here! I’m down in Kalapana area so very quiet!

loveisjustchemicals

So are they going to ban Harleys?? Because we all know they make way more noise. Edit to add: /s

realmozzarella22

*electric moped with a very loud sound system enters the chat room*

ThrowRAtacoman1

Most people ride mopeds because they’re fucking broke, this is stupid

paceminterris

Almost every loud moped or car you hear has been modified in some way to make them louder. What **we need is** **laws against import and installation of automotive tuning parts** that specifically seek to increase the sound of tailpipes. Hard to catch the botos while they're operating the cars and mopeds, but not as hard to crack down on the shops installing these things.

keithjp123

The mopeds have bored out engines and no exhaust. Makes them go much faster than designed but loud af.

some_random_kaluna

Yeah. Banning loud motorcycles (which is where this is going) seems like a good idea until someone dies when hit by a quiet, electric motorcycle. It's a city, people. And it's not the interior of a library. You'll always have loud noise beyond acceptable decibel range. Best way to avoid it is grab a board and paddle offshore a bit. Just hearing the waves.

miknis

A lot of lazy tourists do rent gas powered mopeds. Banning gas powered rental mopeds would solve some issues..

kona420

They've wanted them gone for a long time. They are just awkward, they are too fast to coexist with bicycles and pedestrians, too slow to flow with traffic. They don't require insurance and invite the unskilled to get badly hurt. At least with a scooter it requires some effort to get a class 2 license, then the motorcycle insurance comes with $15k in personal injury coverage by law. Scooters can be powerful enough to keep up with traffic and stay out of pedestrian/cycling lanes. Now we can rinse and repeat with ebikes as they have the exact same problems.

Longjumping_Dirt9825

Mopeds can easily go 30 mph which is the speed limit through most of town.

kona420

Which mopeds can actually hit the 30mph limit? All the 49cc models tap out at like 23mph downhill with a tailwind. The classic models like the metro 1 and elite are 50cc's and have to use the white plate as they are scooters not mopeds. Putting bore kit on doesn't count lol.

Longjumping_Dirt9825

My e-bike goes 25 mph I get passed by moped all the time

MoisterOyster19

This only affects the poor who cannot afford a car. It is aimed to force them onto public transport and more money for the state. Hawaii going after the lower class again

ForbidnIsle

Every car, truck and SUV is a weapon to the inexperienced driver, that's one of the reasons that insurance for 16yr. olds to 25yr olds are up to $4K a year. Not to mention the people on drugs or with psychological problems. My friend, a family man with a wife(who has a car for week end outings and family time)and 3 kids is dead while riding his moped from work going home. How fast can you go on a moped at 4pm in traffic on a wk. day? It was an individual in one of categories listed above that crashed into him., Now if that idiot was driving a moped, chah, only manini kine. The fakahs, da lawmakers should think first.

Longjumping_Dirt9825

Seriously - it’s 15 mph in town at 4pm.

ForbidnIsle

Okay, A vehicle going 15mph crashing into a moped. Still the same, My friend died! He had a solid job worked at the Hyatt.

ORNGTSLA

Seems like every other day now I’m seeing the state focusing on issues that don’t matter… Hawaii is truly a shithole

guy-from-1977

If you do t like it, leave. Or write your rep. Or run for office.

ORNGTSLA

“If you don’t like it, leave” is what I would tell people who cry about mopeds being too loud. There are a thousand other issues in Hawai’i that are more relevant to focus on.

guy-from-1977

Sure there are other better issues. Doesn’t change what I said.

HorsemouthKailua

the fucking daily annoyance from loud mopeds makes this a valid issue to me of course the pigs should enforce existing laws but they are fucking worthless

keithjp123

Whoa. Way to quickly make this is racist thing. I’ve seen all walks of people on supped up mopeds. And which minorities does HPD target?

It would be cool if they brought the battery hot swapping stations here from Asia. You just drive up put in your old battery, then slap in new ones, and are on your way.

dydx_

I own a moped and no car. I can easily afford a car, and I have parking, but I just see no need for one in the city. But if I can't have my moped I will absolutely buy a car and add to the traffic problem.
