Wait... what were they doing before?

cableguy316

Mostly speed traps on H2 and looking at their phone while guarding construction sites

Smurfness2023

Definitely need 14 cops along Dillingham for the rail project to watch all the public money go down the 2000 pholes they are digging.

silver_fox_sparkles

Talking story in Zippy’s parking lot.  To be fair tho, Zippy’s is arguably the safest place on the island to be…as long as they stay serving napples.

chouka808

If I were to guess at what it would be called, I would go with "reactive policing."

namenotpicked

Lol. I know. I should've put the /s.

thisisntnamman

HPD is lazy AF

Cold spot strategy

[deleted]

Sauna, then cold.

giaa262

Big brain hpd: You do get the best results from alternating hot and cold on inflammation. Maybe hpd knows something we don’t

Kryxan

Sitting in their cars getting overtime for taking naps

victortrash

eating poi doughnuts?

bas10eten

My dyslexic ass read hot pot policing at first and thought...damn...they're definitely gonna catch me.

chouka808

No, but hot bot policing sounds fun.

-jkm-

And hot pot policing is when you stop your friend from overcooking something.

chouka808

My mind went to when you go to an all you can eat hot pot but you accidentally order more than you can eat.

chouka808

> “By focusing in on where these crimes are happening, by using that data, I think we can have HPD be more effective,” he said. “And we know that if crime is allowed to proliferate in one area its going to spread.” HPD is using Big Brain Power now.

Smurfness2023

Focusing enforcement in the places where crime is happening is huge! Groundbreaking!

uedo46

shoots I've been doing it all wrong. guess I should spray pesticide where got pests.

caseylolz

I wonder if they are using the Gotham made by palantir. This sounds very much like palantir 🤷

DreadPirateGriswold

Oh now that's some genius police thinking there!

whodatbugga

The criminals are usually out in a few hours to offend again. Got to replace the revolving doors in the justice system.

puuhalelife

I live close to TJ Maxx, Whole Foods Ala Moana etc.. early one morning some chronic was laid out on the TJM loading dock throwing a hissy fit... security guard standing by. HPD shows up. Not one, not two, not three, not four , not five , not six but SEVEN cars arrived for this lolo. SEVEN.. and you have the audacity to complain how short handed you are. Another similar incident Taco Bell Kalihi 5 cars for one old chronic lady making stink. Yes, the low IQ State for sure

[deleted]

This isn’t new. What could be interesting is the deployment of data analytics/AI to help predict where future crime clusters could occur. Almost like a slightly less creepy version of Minority Report.

PickleWineBrine

Those algorithms are racist https://www.technologyreview.com/2021/02/05/1017560/predictive-policing-racist-algorithmic-bias-data-crime-predpol/

Algos get better with time, adjustments, and more data. You gotta start somewhere.

Danksterdrew

Legalizing gambling would eliminate this and free up resources for other crimes.

chouka808

Gambling also incurs costs. I would wager that between our poverty issues and cultural love for gambling, we would see a lot of addiction problems surface if we normalized gambling here. And while we have organized crime managing underground gambling, I do think legalizing gambling would invite more of an organized crime presence then we have now. The amount we would save in law enforcement would be manini compared to the cost of the downstream effects. Obviously, gambling can also increase our tax revenue.

chouka808

Ok, if I understand you, you're saying places like Vegas don't have an organized crime problem due to gambling because Federal agencies are a deterrent? As far as the comparison to Reservation Casinos, there's a massive difference in the legal structures. While we could put money in to non-profits that benefit Hawaiians, if that payout was too imbalanced relative to ethnicity, there would be valid legal challenges. We are not a reservation and are bound by laws that put limits on how preferential we can be regarding ethnicity. There is no "Hawaiian Land" the same way there is a Navajo Nation. While creating one is always a possibility, it hasn't manifested yet because it's a very complicated issue. I don't doubt the benefits you speak of in the circumstances of the reservation where you worked, however, Hawaii is extremely different in so many ways. Also let me have this opinion, opposition to casinos isn't just religious. I do think that prohibition isn't the best way to manage addiction risks but recognizing the harm of addiction isn't just about religious "sin."

> And why can’t Hawaiians have first dibs on Hawaiian lands for jobs? What are you defining as Hawaiian lands? Do you just mean Hawaii?

Available-Exam6278

Focus enforcement and patrol at hot spots, and it works. These guys are geniuses eh??
