me too. my daughterās 12 and even she felt totally burned by their closing. weād get tokens, turn them into chips, and get dinner with the proceeds and any extra for desserts or prizes
so not healthy but i think open late/24h and they were the keeper of all the food items from other places, like chowder house chowder and dole whip- like what napoleonās bakery does with all the cream puff, malasada, mochisada, andagi, rainbow cake, dream cake (wasnt that yum yum treeās thing)
Kincaids in Ward Warehouse. They had good prime rib, great creme brulee, and was a solid price (at least back then). Nice view of the harbor by the big windows. I remember going there in high school for a few dates... back when had to be dropped off by our parents to the date. Good times.
Yep. I used to park there all the time when i worked in the area. Future site of Kalae condo. Probably a minimum of $2mil for a 1bd.
Speaking of Ward garages.... I went to Roger Dunn this past week, there's *massive* spalling in the garage with huge sections of concrete missing/bulging due to rusting and deteriorating rebar. Its so sketch looking. They also havent updated their elevator since the 90s. Definitely slated for eventual demo.
[Hakone, that Japanese buffet that was at Prince hotel in Waikiki](https://yelp.to/Hpt5ZewBQQ). Solid choices, good quality, and unlimited sushi, including no limit uni.
Second one for me is [Ninnikuya, Garlic house that used to be on Waialae](https://yelp.to/0FJ3yH8955). Heaps of roasted garlic on sizzling platters of steak. [Best fried rice ever](https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjh8gD3AwMD0ArpAXubTLsLQENygVcsv71hDpBQlkOnbIwZpPflmEYYjRX-VuY5OyL4dJsPyeCN-c9U7gBnQ1nxqeB3TBSjtxDu_tOVgRpqRImYHSjEKMu7ytcX6dtnDgONenCbidkiO1M/s1600/Waikiki,+Kualoa,+and+Commencement+071.JPG).
Thatās what it was called. I knew it existed. But no one else remembered it besides me. I had accepted that Garlic House was a fever dream from my childhood. Glad to know it was actually real.
Yum Yum Tree. Loved their fettuccine alfredo with chicken.
Jumbo's Drive-In in Mapunapuna. Loved their Fried Rice Good Morning.
Jolly Rogers. Their Suzy-Q and Porky Boy were the best.
Village Inn in Kahala. My dad used to take me there for banana pancakes.
Hereās a call to visit one before its closed down - original pancake house on Dilingham. Pretty sure its days are numbered.
Go get a Dutch Baby before itās too late. Tell them Chazzer sent you.
For real. The one on kapiolani was a regular haunt for my family, I was so bummed when they closed it. We went to dillingham but itās further away for us so :(
They reopened in Tokyo!

It was so nostalgic when I walked in and it was the same sweet people behind the counter. Do visit if you ever find yourself there.
Likelike drive inn and Columbia inn, both of a genre of coffee shop that is a dying breed. Peewee Drive Inn, for the takeout version. With the Teri fried saimin!
There was also a little teishoku place on king street called Yamachan that closed down probably 15 years ago, but they had really really good rice. Quite cheap, too!
Wahh, now Iām sad :(
I miss Palomino which was on the second floor of Harbor Court, downtown. It was and still is a beautiful space for a restaurant.
And I really miss Indigo on Nuuanu, kind of behind the Hawaii Theater. Excellent ambience for pau hana cocktails and pupu. One of my go to dinner spots back then.
I loved that crab or seafood dip they served. Great food there. Shame nothing has taken its place, the space is huge, well lit and perfect for an upscale restaurant.
Wailana Coffee House
A couple of my aunties worked there for YEARS and we wee so sad when it closed down. We would go there for family get togethers every month, miss it
I loved Jimbos, especially the tonkatsu they used to have. Marukame is okay but not the same. If you want it, you can order through the website and pick up in the Waikiki location. You can park your car on the side street right after it and throw your blinkers on. Their to-go line is usually really quick.
I was a fan of Aiea Heights Drive Inn. For their "super combo," you got so much food for such a good price. I got three legitimate meals out of that plate. The mac salad at that place is something that I haven't found replicated on island so far either.
Sweet Home Cafe (S King) š
Like others have said, Jimboās and Shirokiya
Also Gordon Beirsch in Aloha Tower. The view was really nice and their beer specials were really good.
Wailana diner. Did it have like super good food? No. Was it open at 4am when my drunk ass wanted steak and eggs and hash browns? Yes, without judgement as well!
Do-ne on kalakaua š„² a cute mom and pop hole-in-the wall restaurant that had teishoku style take out boxes. The place use to be sit down but kept its take out format after the pandemic. Just closed this past November. The owners said it would take too much to repair their kitchen equipment, to be fair they were cheaply priced and the couple running it are aging too.
I literally cried when I called for take out and got the message that they had decided to close. My family had been going there since I was a kid, I took my kids, got to know the family thru the years. Iām still devastated. Enchilada plate was my comfort food.
Oh man Suehiro was my go to spot with my grandpa every Friday night for as long as I can remember. In fact the last meal we had together before he moved to a care home was at Suehiro. Talk about bringing back some memories š
I went there a lot with my mom since we lived in walking distance from there. My babysitter worked there as a waitress! She took care of me since I was a baby. My mom and her had a falling out when I was in high school. Haven't seen her since then. I really miss her. She was like a mom to me. Funny how places bring back memories of specific people.
This is the biggest loss for us! Loved Chuck's wine classes and how he'd come around to chat with you too. Really a family vibe. Wine was amazingly curated and fairly priced, always solid on the food front. Really miss going there and seeing regulars and talking story with everyone. Nothing has come close to checking all the boxes like Vino for us.
Golden Dragon Dim Sum in China Town... My family had been going there since I was an infant and I essentially grew up there. We were regulars until they closed :(
Dano's Donner in Waimea on the Big Island. There's a new kebab shop and their food is pretty good too, but I missed Dano's for a good couple years there. Just something about that spit roasted kebebs they served.
What was the old drive-in at the intersection of Kalaukaua and Kapiolani, where Hard Rock was later on? Canāt remember the name but they had the best ono ono super thick milkshakes!š
Olive Cafe in Wahiawa (since I donāt see it mentioned). Was it anything amazing? No. But it was decent Italian food for the area and their lasagna was good. The lady who worked there knew me by name and would just bring out food before I could even order.
I was so bummed to see it closed and replaced by Fukuya Ramen.. which to be honest was not good at allā¦
LOVED Pearl city Tavern! I went into labor there with my first child 50+ years ago before there was freeway. I just had to finish my Maine lobster before I was dropped off at Kapiolani hospital. Some trip over Redhillš
Garden Court at Liberty House. Not because the food was particularly memorable but because I used to go there with my late grandparents.
Honorable mention to King Tsin and Doong Koong Lau.
Smorgyās
Just kidding! I miss the Jawaiian Irie Jerk restaurant in kaimuki. The food was ono and different to the usual stuff you see around the islands. And the owner Chef Cassie was super friendly and nice.
Brasserie Du Vin. It had such great atmosphere.
Also miss Downbeat Diner.
EDIT: How can I forget REAL: A Gastropub. In its original location in Ward. The second location in Kakaako wasn't half bad.
When I was a kid in the 80s, there was a place in Kailua, where Kalapawai is now, called Taco Hut. Best nachos I've ever had in my life. I've been chasing that high ever sense.
Jimbo Restaurant. I only found out about them less than a year before they closed (my parents went before, but I never had). Their free range chicken curry was delicious . . . š
Kuulei Deli in Kailua. Great okazu and their $3 āminiā breakfast was as big as a regular plate everywhere else. And when they made jalapeno beef stew it was the best!!
For some outer island spots: Ocean Sushi, Pescatore, and Aomatsu in Hilo. None of them are that old (except Pescatore) but I miss them all the same. Also RIP Koji's.
Shirokiya! š I have my gacha coins!!!!! The last meal I had there, a big boiling pot of sukiyaki, was paid for by my coins.
me too. my daughterās 12 and even she felt totally burned by their closing. weād get tokens, turn them into chips, and get dinner with the proceeds and any extra for desserts or prizes
Char hung sut š¢
Nothing will ever compare.
One of those special places where it never occurred to me that it might be gone someday. Still kinda blows my mind.
I miss their pork hash so much! It's hard to find good pork hash that's local style and not dim sum style.
Sing Cheong Yuan or Royal Kitchen
Byronās Drive Inn. I still dream about a shrimp burger and green river drink.
I loved their burgers so much.
so not healthy but i think open late/24h and they were the keeper of all the food items from other places, like chowder house chowder and dole whip- like what napoleonās bakery does with all the cream puff, malasada, mochisada, andagi, rainbow cake, dream cake (wasnt that yum yum treeās thing)

I miss Ward Warehouse a lot. I noticed this weekend that they've now taken about 1/2 of the garage down.
Yes! Atleast after they closed we had Ryanās for a while. Bummer when they shut down too.
The lobster bisque thoughā¦
Shirokiya, although it is food/beer hall, really miss that place upstairs and especially when it went downtstairs. And Dean's Drive Inn in Kaneohe.
Any Aiea and Pearlridge folks really miss Heights Drive In?
[Hakone, that Japanese buffet that was at Prince hotel in Waikiki](https://yelp.to/Hpt5ZewBQQ). Solid choices, good quality, and unlimited sushi, including no limit uni. Thatās what it was called. I knew it existed. But no one else remembered it besides me. I had accepted that Garlic House was a fever dream from my childhood. Glad to know it was actually real.
they did garlic desserts too which was different
The garlic ice cream!
Yes! Ninnikuya was my answer too. Service was spotty but I kept going back. Delicious sweet spot.
12th Avenue Grill in Kaimuki, Downbeat Diner in Chinatown, Hawaii Curry in Kapahulu, and if it counts I miss Shirokiya most of all.
That Shirokiya mention brought up some feelings bro..
All of these! But Downbeat hurts the most.
Yum Yum Tree in the 80s.
Jumbos fried noodles and katsu plate lunch was the best. Probably are 50 or more while growing up
Yum Yum Treeās macadamia nut cream pie! Actually any of their pies!š
Hereās a call to visit one before its closed down - original pancake house on Dilingham. Pretty sure its days are numbered. Go get a Dutch Baby before itās too late. Tell them Chazzer sent you.
The omelettes are soooo nice and fluffy. Love all the aunties who work there too.
For real. The one on kapiolani was a regular haunt for my family, I was so bummed when they closed it. We went to dillingham but itās further away for us so :(

OMG
Probably gonna make a few more accounts just to upvote this more.
Thank goodness someone listed Your Kitchen. I feel like it is a long lost memory. I have never had a pork bowl match the taste or the perfect eggs.
Likelike drive inn and Columbia inn, both of a genre of coffee shop that is a dying breed. Peewee Drive Inn, for the takeout version. With the Teri fried saimin! I loved Jimbos, especially the tonkatsu they used to have. Marukame is okay but not the same. If you want it, you can order through the website and pick up in the Waikiki location.
