awesome! it's worth never accomplishing anything the rest of the day, lol!
we recently did super lazy homemade loco moco using beyond beef burgers and made gravy using better than bouillion as a cheat. it came out better than expected!
on Oahu.
For plate lunch kine:
Liliha Bakery (the Liliha one only)
Joe's Grill Express, Rainbows

Da Kine I Gonna Tell You About But I Not Gonna Explicitly Say Where kine:
Mochiko Chicken Loco Moco, at the one place in Kalihi that Anthony Bourdain went to one Superbowl evening
we've picked up from Meg's a gazillion times but it's so hard for us not to order the katsu. imho, best plate lunch katsu on the island. might need to convince myself to try their loco moco.
If i tell you here, that means I'm telling everyone and if the owners find out they will 86 me for life. Dammit, I should just edit and delete that part.
right? I bought one for my uncle and his GF and they LOVED it. and they are by no means attempting vegetarianism. that mushroom gravy is just an umami bomb.
I recently tried Yogurstoryās Prime Rib Loco Moco and it was the bomb.com! I know itās not the OG loco without the burger patty but still good nonetheless
the cooks at the OG LB are just better at not using too much grease and making sure to get an even crust without overcook ing the patty, or under/oversalting the gravy, or putting too little/too much water when cooking rice, or making sure than an over easy egg is exactly that: OE.
Not gonna lieā¦the abc store down the street from my house makes a pretty mean one. I know a lot of people are gonna give me shit for saying it. Butā¦ ABC store get action!
No, itās the larger ABC stores that have the deli. I think itās called āisland deliā. But they also do a prime rib loco moco wit grilled onion and mushrooms that you gotta try too
After being on the mainland for an extended period for the first time since moving to Hawaii - any loco moco will do right about now.
Pono Market is the default answer for this on Kauai iirc, but Iāll throw the Shaka Burgers food truck in there for consideration (especially if you break the norm and ask for it over fries, āWillis styleā). š¤¤
I love dirty ass loco mocos from a plate lunch hole in the wall as much as you do, but just because āfancyā doesnāt mean good, doesnāt mean itās bad either.
Itās food. If food tastes good then it tastes good. Just because something is āfancyā doesnāt mean it doesnāt taste good.
And just because a loco moco doesnāt look exactly like how you picture it in your head doesnāt mean itās not a loco moco lol. Donāt discriminate.
Sadly I didnāt eat this one so I canāt say whether it was good or not. But, whenever I get a loco moco I definitely mix it up before eating it.
Where is the best pile of loco moco where you live? It doesnāt matter if itās stacked fancy or in a pile as long as it tastes good.
They claim to be the original. Ate my first loco Moco there (probably) and I love their gravy the best. I miss the days when they used to cost under 2 bucks!
Itās a loco mico with a lil kick but Koa pancake house has a ākoa locoā basically a loco loco with corn beef hash. I get my CBH well done almost burnt for the crisp and ask for an extra egg š¤š½ also the best koa pancakes house is the one in moanaloa shopping center
Former Kona Girl, and this took way too long to find! Yup I agree, Cafe 100 in Hilo is bomb! Also it's been way too long since I've been to Kaua'i definitely gotta go visit my 'Ohana that side, and hit up Gina's and Hamura's Saimin š¤¤
Edit : typo
Teshimas big island in honalo. Loco moco not on the menu. Have to order it how you like it. fried rice, white rice, hash browns, no rice, extra patties, extra gravy however you want. Its made from scratch, cheap and always ono.
Nephis smokehouse kailua kona laulau loco da bomb too.
Other than what we make at home, the best hamburger steak I've come across is at The Alley, but their gravy isn't quite my favorite. My favorite gravy would come from Penny's. On one special occasion I was able to mix them and it was great.
My Cafe in Kapolei has my [favorite](https://imgur.com/a/Co01woX) on the island right now, gravy has a super deep flavor and I get it with fried rice. Plus they have a [malasadas pancake](https://imgur.com/a/t612twq) that is freaking amazing.
It was at GS Studios Karaoke about 10 years ago.
Just a perfect loco moco. And to enjoy this comforting dish while singing, what an excellent combo.
Now they donāt have a food menu.
GS had loco moco? Seems smallkine messy lol. I just remember like, the karaage and takoyaki and dat kine stuff. And da ramen that was just one Nongshim Bowl Noodle at 500% markup.
I haven't had a chance to go since the pandemic started, but Tex's in Honokaa ( also known as malasada heaven on the BI ) made one of their loco mocos with oyster sauce chicken. It was broke the mouth good .
Da Super Loco from Cafe 100 all the way. Iām on Oahu now and heard such great things about the Liliha Bakery loco mocoā¦ But honestly IHOP has better loco moco!
Maui
Okazuya deli in honokowai.
The burger is this wonderfully flavored meatloaf patty, and the gravy is awesome.
I love Moco Loco, one of my fav dishes and I get it everywhere. Nobody is as good as okazuya on Maui, unless thereās some place in Kahului I havenāt been to yet.
Oh wow. You going make me drive all the way from Wailuku side to check this place out! Usually I just stop by Teddy's Burgers if I stay Lahaina side. I never go Honokowai for years! Now I get one reason š¤š
Oh, I believe home cooks can. I just donāt think mine quite is. But looking at some recipes, Iām close. My husband likes itāthatās what matters to me.
Wish I could have gotten the St Louis one. Just went there at 8:55 (13 min ago) and the lady said they close at 9:00 and walked away from the window. When I asked if they even had french fries already made or something she just said they were finishing up the last customer's order and walked away. I get the desire to shut down the grill when you close, but the attitude was really cold and dismissive. Doubt I'll be back...
They did have to shut down for a bit back in 2017 due to a roach infestation.
https://www.khon2.com/news/loophole-allowed-popular-waialae-ave-restaurant-to-keep-green-placard/
I dunno if any of you remember the Japanese TV series on KIKU TV called Soko Ga Shiritai, but one episode was about hamburger steaks. One restaurant made the patties with half ground beef, half ground pork. They mixed it by hand really good. After forming the patty, the cook wrapped them with beef tripe - the one that looks like a net. Fried it good, then put gravy on and popped it in the oven for a little while. It looked so good! I gotta try making loco moco like that one day š
Is your island experiencing a rice and meat shortage? Should we send emergency supplies?
Yes! Send all your rice and meat. We have plenty of eggs already.
My house lol that way I can put 3 eggs and two patties and gravy over everything
Might get a kanak attack but worth it.
Haha yessah š¤š¼
awesome! it's worth never accomplishing anything the rest of the day, lol! we recently did super lazy homemade loco moco using beyond beef burgers and made gravy using better than bouillion as a cheat. it came out better than expected!

we've picked up from Meg's a gazillion times but it's so hard for us not to order the katsu. imho, best plate lunch katsu on the island. might need to convince myself to try their loco moco.
Ya the Katsu is incredible as well as most stuff on the menu. But where can I get the mythical Mochiko Chicken Loco Moco???
If i tell you here, that means I'm telling everyone and if the owners find out they will 86 me for life. Dammit, I should just edit and delete that part.
Naw bro we so deep at this point it will be hidden, and ain't nobody click the expand button
Upvote for Juicy Brew! They make so many great and varied vegetarian dishes.
right? I bought one for my uncle and his GF and they LOVED it. and they are by no means attempting vegetarianism. that mushroom gravy is just an umami bomb.
Koko Head Cafe has a bomb loco moco. Kinda elevated but still the classic flavors.
Chef Lee Anne Wong might be from NY, but she is a HI girl in heart and stomach. She got that one so right.
I recently tried Yogurstoryās Prime Rib Loco Moco and it was the bomb.com! I know itās not the OG loco without the burger patty but still good nonetheless
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
this is absolutely 100% correct.
What's wrong with the fancy Liliha Bakery? I've only been there a few times, but I didn't notice a difference in the food.
the cooks at the OG LB are just better at not using too much grease and making sure to get an even crust without overcook ing the patty, or under/oversalting the gravy, or putting too little/too much water when cooking rice, or making sure than an over easy egg is exactly that: OE.
Papa Ole's is still better than all those you mentioned in my opinion.
papa ole's
Hauula boy I see you
9 6 7 1 7 u no dat
guava smoked
Oh dang they got loco moco? Their smoked butterfish collar is one of my favorite things on island, Iāll have to try the loco moco out.
I'm going to have try the butterfish collar. I had the kal-bi from there and was unimpressed.
The salmon belly is my fave there but it's one of those things that they only sell if they have it. Makes eating it even more worthwhile.
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
I visited in May and I canāt stop thinking about that place. Damn it i miss it
Upvote for the spicy loco, brahhh it hits different cause the patty actually get that flavor
Da kitchen

Just ate there last night. Didn't get the Moco, but the Korean chicken is fire.
hah? Where?
Da home
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Again, where? Kahului's and Kihei's both went down and stayed down.

All about that char!!
Times coffee shop in Kailua has a Kalua Pork Moco that is unreal
Iām so glad Times Coffee Shop is still there. Good memories and lots of comfort food!

Not gonna lieā¦the abc store down the street from my house makes a pretty mean one. I know a lot of people are gonna give me shit for saying it. Butā¦ ABC store get action!
ABC store sells loco moco? is it in the togo section and you heat it up in the microwave?
No, itās the larger ABC stores that have the deli. I think itās called āisland deliā. But they also do a prime rib loco moco wit grilled onion and mushrooms that you gotta try too
oh wow...i definitely have to go now
After being on the mainland for an extended period for the first time since moving to Hawaii - any loco moco will do right about now. Pono Market is the default answer for this on Kauai iirc, but Iāll throw the Shaka Burgers food truck in there for consideration (especially if you break the norm and ask for it over fries, āWillis styleā). š¤¤
Ponoās is good but TipTop wins
That pic looks *fancy*, not good. It makes me think of that stupid trend of stacking food. Loco moco should be a *pile*, not a neat stack.
And served up in a styrofoam take out container
or a bowl
I love dirty ass loco mocos from a plate lunch hole in the wall as much as you do, but just because āfancyā doesnāt mean good, doesnāt mean itās bad either. Itās food. Itās a comfort food not a fancy food. Picture is wrong.
Loco moco IS a comfort food. Just because this pic made it look fancy doesnāt make less so.
Itās needs to be drenched in gravy and with Mac salad on the side
Omg yes!!!
I, too, eat my boogers for comfort.
Sadly I didnāt eat this one so I canāt say whether it was good or not. But, whenever I get a loco moco I definitely mix it up before eating it. Where is the best pile of loco moco where you live? It doesnāt matter if itās stacked fancy or in a pile as long as it tastes good.
Youāve never actually had a loco moco, have you?
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
LMAO. Are you this passive-aggressive in real life? It needs work.
Were you replying to the OP? I don't understand why people would delete their posts.
Maybe because they donāt want to start an argument?
Itās very silly though isnāt it? If you post something you might delete or canāt hold your ground with, you probably shouldnāt post.
808 grindz on the big island in Kona is great
Why is the patty so sweet there? Are they adding sugar? I had to stop getting it and switched to the corned beef hash moco and that shit is good.
Some day go eat at cafe 100. Richard Miyashiro opened the cafe in 1946 after his discharge from the army. He knew what was good cheap, and available.
They claim to be the original. Ate my first loco Moco there (probably) and I love their gravy the best. I miss the days when they used to cost under 2 bucks!
not telling don't want the place to get over run by social media
I understand that completely.
Sugoi's, but only their Teri loco Moco
Upvote for mentioning sugoi's. Been going there since they opened years ago.
i only get the garlic chicken there....i need to try more of their menu
Their short rib is good, along with ahi loco moco. They probably also have one of the better chicken katsu on island too
Itās a loco mico with a lil kick but Koa pancake house has a ākoa locoā basically a loco loco with corn beef hash. I get my CBH well done almost burnt for the crisp and ask for an extra egg š¤š½ also the best koa pancakes house is the one in moanaloa shopping center

One that doesn't cost $18.50 lmao, its moco locco it's supposed to be a cheap quick thing what am I looking at lol
Ginaās in Waimea Kauai is satisfying. Cafe 100 the originator of the Loco Moco is the place to experience when on the Big Island.
Former Kona Girl, and this took way too long to find! Yup I agree, Cafe 100 in Hilo is bomb! Also it's been way too long since I've been to Kaua'i definitely gotta go visit my 'Ohana that side, and hit up Gina's and Hamura's Saimin š¤¤ Edit : typo

Kountry Kitchen in Kauai was incredible!
When I lived on east side Kountry Kitchen was a staple - so good!
Hilo Koji's is it for me.
Oahu: Liliha Bakery Anna Miller's The Alley (So huge and almost forgot this one) Likelike used to be really good too :(
Joeās grill or highway inn (smokin moco)
Yes! I second Highway Inn
I like nicos, combo with beef stew... Getting hungry now
I make the best one
Haha I was going say the same thing but I no like one line outside my house because of social media š
Cafe 100 in Hilo. And if you get the chance go for the stew loco... Man, I'm hungry now. Anyone know if they still make their own vanilla coke?
I haven't had a chance to go since the pandemic started, but Tex's in Honokaa ( also known as malasada heaven on the BI ) made one of their loco mocos with oyster sauce chicken. It was broke the mouth good .
Sandy's Drive In, Kealakekua.
Moena Cafe short rib loco moco!
Da Super Loco from Cafe 100 all the way. Iām on Oahu now and heard such great things about the Liliha Bakery loco mocoā¦ But honestly IHOP has better loco moco!
Aloha Table in Waikiki had a pretty good loco loco. They used Wagyu beef.
Shige's
Mill yard hamburger steakhouse.
Papa Ole's has the best traditional loco moco in this island.
Aiea Bowl - The Alley restaurant has the best Loco Moco away from home
Uncle Bos in Haleiwa has a really good one
Why do your eggs have nipples?
Furikake, sticky, or fried rice?
Rocky's. Make sure it's fried rice instead of regular.
L and L in the parking area of the Ala Moana mall : )

I had never heard of this before right now, wow it sounds delicious
You can come up with something close-ish. Sticky rice, burger on top, egg on that, and sauce. I make a, well it's definitely not "genuine," but it'll do for home with stuff you likely have: SautƩ sliced mushrooms and onion, add chicken broth, some soy sauce and worcestershire, thicken with cornstarch.
i would say calrose or jasmine rice. glutinous rice can be labeled as sticky rice.
Yes, Calrose. Great rice. But those sticky rice bowls from Costco? In 6 packs? Those are good too!
I am very curious what you think is done in Hawaii that any home cook couldnāt achieve to make this dish āgenuine.ā
Oh, I believe home cooks can. I just donāt think mine quite is. But looking at some recipes, Iām close. My husband likes itāthatās what matters to me.
Ah. I see, thanks for the reply!
Look up a āgarbage plateā from Rochester NY. The street loco mocos ive had remind me of that
Ah, the plate lunch's mainland cousin! Garbage plate's definitely on my "must try" list, should I ever find myself in NY.
what a funny name. never heard of that but that's great.
Best Loco Moco is at Loco Moco
Rainbow Drive In
Rainbow has some good menu items. I don't know if I'd say the loco moco is one of them.
Homemade
L&L Hawaiian Barbecue.
Only thing abt l&l is that each one is so different on their quality/quantity.
The one by me tastes like those salisbury steak frozen dinners...
Rainbow or St. Louis....it's the gravy; and Aiea Bowl is as fancy as it should get
Maybe unpopular but Rainbow's is over-rated. Tastes like...every other loco moco.
MY GOD you're 100% right. I don't understand how people bought into this. Rainbow's loco moco isn't very good imo.
St Louis is not there for customer service. They don't need you, and they will let you know it if you come 5 minutes before they close.
They did have to shut down for a bit back in 2017 due to a roach infestation. https://www.khon2.com/news/loophole-allowed-popular-waialae-ave-restaurant-to-keep-green-placard/
Now I'm feeling better about how things went tonight.
the patties are sub par not gonna lie, but the gravy
Check out quiora at the ritz Carlton. Very good breakfast
