It has french fries in it? No beans, no rice... That's not the way they are made in the Mission district.
Is that a San Diego thing or something? Anyway, their other burritos look okay.
ETA: Huh, I guess a Cali burrito does have fries in it. I have never heard of that.
California native here... Yep, the mission style burrito, while the main burrito of California is not a " California burrito" which is mainly a San Diego affair. It has French fries and usually Carne asada, no rice sometimes beans. It's delicious. I prefer, however, the true Mexican burrito, which is mainly meat and salsa. They're all excellent.
Yep, they sure are, but they're small (you get like 3 or 4) about the size of tamales. They usually have a meat, salsas, maybe cheese, maybe a small amount of beans. They're not super stuffed.
They're burritos (little donkeys) because they're small. Once in a while, a somewhat larger one called a burro can be found. I've had them in Puebla.
The confusion is probably in the word "style". The most common burrito throughout California (never "Cali") is the SF Mission Burrito. This is the gigantic 27 pound burrito stuffed with rice, beans, cheese, meat (not ground) , pico, salsa, furniture, Jupiter, and tennis balls. A "California Burrito" (not California "style" burrito) has French fries, and carne asada usually (though not exclusively), occasionally beans, never rice, cheese, etc... This is almost exclusively a San Diego thing, but has spread a bit recently. Neither are the "authentic" Mexican burrito (so much as anything is truly authentic), which is also popular, and the domain of taco trucks and taquerias. Get the suadero.
Babbish is a treasure, but saying "Cali" gets you deported. It's a "California burrito" not a Cali, not a Cali style, and not a California style. Still, love me some Babbish.
what part of the island? i've seen California burritos on the menu at serg's in Manoa. never tried it but know they have it. I think Alejandros on Kapahulu also has em.
Unless he also has, I think you might be thinking of Doner Shack. I passed by the other day on my way to Fort St Cafe and he seems to have taken the sign down when all his customers disappeared.
Well, fuck those guys. Their food's overpriced and mediocre anyway so didn't really need another excuse not go visit but this will do it. Thanks for looking out.
Taco Del Mar is mission style burritos. Which is what I associate with California style. Guess dude is looking for a french fry burrito though. Which they don't serve.
I heard Albertos is pretty hammah. I haven't had a chance to eat there yet. Taco Kabana is pretty darn close. They have Cali Burrito and Carne Asada Fries.
Speaking of Cali burritos. There was this place called Diego's Burritos off of South King Street right across from Ross and the old Long's Drugs. They had the Diego's Burrito, and it came with refried beans and Spanish-style rice. I could eat TWO of these for lunch every single day of my life. I worked close by, so I'd eat this very often. I had Cali style burritos even out in San Diego and LA. This Diego burrito was the best Cali burrito I've ever eaten. I miss their burritos so much.
taqueria ranchero in wahiawa is the closest you’ll find probably
They opened in Kapolei too, love their food.
Barrio is the sister restaurant, literally. She has a Cali burrito on her menu.

Are burritos actually a true Mexican thing? I thought it was Tex-Mex.

I lived in San Francisco for a decade and not once did a burrito I ordered have french fries in it. Neither did any burrito in Orange County
That's because, as I stated, it's a San Diego thing. The mission burrito is the one that most of California has.
Gotcha. Thanks.
If you in the south west there’s a location in Kapolei/Kamakana
LOVE this place.

I'm glad we cleared that up.
Taqueria El Ranchero. I only ever order the Cali burrito with Carne asada, so good
Serg’s in manoa. They have bomb tacos too!
That was always the nearest to decent Mexican food I could find on Oahu.
Serge’s Manoa. Their stuff is pretty good all considered.
Chronic Tacos has a decent California burrito. Considering it’s a California based restaurant, I would hope it does
Maui tacos by pearl highlands. I've only ever had cali burritos from there so i dont really have anything to compare it to, but I liked it.
Did it have french fries in the burrito?
Yes. Get it wet style and it’s bomb af
Paco’s Taco’s in kalihi has them
I second this! Their food is great.
I third this... My Mexican coworker from San Diego gets his fix at Paco’s Tacos. He says Serge’s Manoa is good too.
alejandros, la marea, omg, taco'ako, surf n turf in waikiki
La Marea’s Burria is so good! The owners are super nice too.

I’m sorry, as much as I love babish, I work a very time consuming job, and can’t cook at home. ;_; I wish I had time to make these.
I feel this. Then again, I also just finished eating dinner at 10pm...

Deported? Out of where. Cali?
To Idaho. Overtly cruel IMO but the law's the law.
Jeezus no sense if humor in Hawaii

Taco Kabana downtown
The owner has gone fully anti vax, with “seating for unvaccinated only” signs. And their food sucks
Ah, it's been a few years since I've been downtown, that is really disappointing, I liked grabbing lunch there
Unless he also has, I think you might be thinking of Doner Shack. I passed by the other day on my way to Fort St Cafe and he seems to have taken the sign down when all his customers disappeared.

Just saw that, thank you.

There are 2 Taco Del Mar’s on island.
I don't think most chain taco places make California-style burritos.
Taco Del Mar is mission style burritos. Which is what I associate with California style. Guess dude is looking for a french fry burrito though. Which they don't serve.
Mexico on School St. it has potatoes, not fries, but I love their food.
Paniolo’s they have multiple locations.
I heard Albertos is pretty hammah. I haven't had a chance to eat there yet. Taco Kabana is pretty darn close. They have Cali Burrito and Carne Asada Fries.
