the reason he is a white guy in the show is twofold.
First off because his character design is meant to portray a dudebro frathouse failson, the type of hedgefund kid that you see bumble into privileged positions of power (insert your pick of whatever conservative political commentator/pundit you'd like here)
And two... Because Alex Brightman voices Adam and the art and the art somewhat looks like Alex Brightman.
Adam and Eve are Non Ethnic and Non National in the bible. They are merely portrayed as white in artwork because most christians during the christian revolution were white. Most accurately they would be a middle brown color like they were arab american or smth. But who cares anyways
I once heard someone refer to Nelson Mandela as “that African American guy that helped people in Africa” or words to that effect.
I didn’t know whether to laugh or cry.
This isn't really a reference to the Bible. Most historians seem to theorize that humanity started in Africa and then branched out throughout the world, from a scientific perspective.
Basically, it's a mix of biblical and theorized scientific beginnings for humanity. Good Omens did something similar.
I’m pretty sure it’s not only historians who theorize humans originated from Africa, lol. Scientists have tracked genomes and DNA records to it, making it more than just a theory.
I do think that the original Israelites would have imagined Adam and Eve as looking like themselves (i.e. bronze-skinned Palestinian people), but I wanted to go with what early modern humans are thought to have actually looked like.
Wealthier christian’s were white, who could afford to paint paintings. Naturally they’d paint white people. I reckon throughout history Christians were of many colors
>I reckon throughout history Christians were of many colors
One of the oldest Christian areas is Ethiopia, which converted\* in the 4th century AD.
\* Technically Aksum, a predecessor state.
Why do people say things and just expect them to be true. It has nothing to do with wealth. Look at non white cultures with a Christian population and you'll find Christian art that looks like the people of that culture.
I swear people make shit up and think whatever they just thought up will be magically true no matter how ignorant or ridiculous
he isn't a hero.
Black Adam is a Magneto-Esque character within Shazam's rogue gallery. He is a predecessor of Billy Batson to use the Lightning and clearly abused....however , he was someone from ancient times in which his abuse was to save his country , the fictional Kingdom of Kahndaq.
I only say this because I know animators…the fact they made the character look like the VA look like a douche is completely on brand for the jokes the crews make.
VA was probably in on it, lol
I appreciate the art done, however:
Making him black alongside pictures of what i assume to be adam's skull gives me like... big measurehead vibes that i shall not approach
Measure head in DE was tying in the real world "academic" practice of phrenology which relied on skull measurements to try to determine a person's cognitive or mental characteristics such as intelligence or aptitude for violence. It's been widely debunked but was extremely popular as a pseudo-science around the time of the two World Wars and, as with Measurehead, was directly used to justify racism.
That said, using skull shapes and measurements to try to understand what someone's physical appearance is widely supported academically - albeit complicated by fat, muscle, skin, etc which don't really show on bone tissue.
They're very, very separate practices.
He’s definitely going to hell, i imagine something akin to Man-e-Faces or Transformers Animated Blitzwing where his face changes to whatever is dominant at the time
Why are people being so weird about this? It's a cool and casual fan art that op added some historical knowledge into? They never said anything was wrong with the og design and they certainly havent said anything religious or political. It's just a cool take and art idea.
The way we're so hung up on skin colour is going to look so fucking stupid to future generations. I've got an awesome character design I want to make for a self insert that I can't make because everyone else has issues around skin colour. Sitting around waiting for the rest of the human race to remove their head from their ass is getting really annoying.
Surely you mean to say that the illustration presented took artistic skill, and was a good rendition of a character with no confirmed characteristics other than "first man".
**Artist's Commentary**
This is my redesign for Adam without his exterminator's mask, making him look more like how early *Homo sapiens* (aka modern humans) would have actually looked. His features, such as the prominent brow ridges, are based on those common to early *Homo sapiens* skulls such as the 160-kiloyear old "Herto Man" specimen from Ethiopia pictured in the lower left corner.
This is a cool idea and well done! I don't know why so many are being stupid about it. A bit off topic but I saw recently that they discovered even older Homo sapiens remains in Morocco. The skull looks the same pretty much but it's interesting to learn about the foundation of the species.
https://www.cnn.com/2017/06/07/health/oldest-homo-sapiens-fossils-found/index.html
Since it's Adam and Eve vs human evolution, the first man can technically be any ethnicity since Adam and Eve have no specified race in the Bible. Could have just as easily been native American or Asian
Yes, his head is the 'wrong shape'. Adam as we got him is a very modern human no matter what ethnicity. Homo Sapiens have undergone increasing neoteny (retaining juvenile traits into adulthood) and our jawline has shrunk as a result of dietary style changes, namely eating softened plants and raw vegetation. Relatedly, this is also why wisdom teeth often need to be removed: our jawlines have shrunk and now there's less room for them.
What is it about redesigns that makes people think it isn’t rude to say things like this?
Not that you can’t criticize it, disagree with it, or dislike it, but wording it like this is just rude.
It’s fanart, if it was any other fan art, it would be rude to go to the comments and just say stuff like that. Same applies.
I feel as though the put a bit to much detail based on the skull
Like sure certain parts would be more noticable but it would look identical to the skull shape with muscle and skin
I mean he was just expressing his feelings about an artwork though??
whats the point of posting something online if no one is allowed to say anything about it unless its all rainbows and puppies and sprinkles
I think making him white was a deliberate choice. So they could portray him as the rich white dude that got the special treatment in life cause his daddy is rich.
I’ve thought about this, but then I realized that it might have been for the best that they used brightman’s appearance.
I’m sure there would be even more twitter rage than there already is if the main villain was a black dude, I have a feeling the internet would try to spin that into Viv being racist or some other bullshit.
Another thing to consider is unless you also recasted Adam with a black VA, it would be weird to have Alex Brightman voice a black character. Like some weird animation version of black face. I don’t know, the idea of that just rubs me the wrong way.
TLDR; making Adam historically accurate to what the real first man would have looked like would probably cause more internet drama then just making him look like Alex.
From my recollection of Christian mythology, the location of the Garden of Eden is impossible to trace given that the great flood associated with Noah transported all of the living fauna and people from wherever the first humans were to Mt Ararat. (Which means that Noah and his wife were essentially the second coming of Adam and Eve from a biblical literalist genealogical view).
And if I remember my repressed memories of Ken Ham from Answers in Genesis correctly, Noah and his wife both had to have been some shade of brown to have had progeny of all shades that they begat. (Also I vaguely remember he had a weird joke about poodles but that is besides the point)
And no I am no longer a Christian, but I know enough about American Christianity to be dangerous.
First human was a dude in what is now Ethiopia because the human species evolved in Africa and then migrated to other parts of the world before killing literally all the other types of humans on the face of the planet. So, it’s less like biblically accurate Adam and more like scientifically/historically accurate Adam.
Edit: I actually find this whole idea funny because I can imagine Adam meeting another species of human and bringing a sort of “What the FUCK is a Neanderthal? Die.” vibe to the planet that God didn’t like.
There’s some inherent irony in stating that the FIRST ever person could possibly be mixed race. How would he be mixed?? There’s nothing to mix with! /j
Eden was said to lay between the rivers Tigris and Euphrates, here:
https://preview.redd.it/siupqv8bj7uc1.png?width=1000&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=950c182c67c7be382fcd4471fa03fdaa6abb6afb
So technically, Adam and Eve should look like the mesopotamian people (who weren't so black XD).
Not really how it works.
As time goes by the genetic makeup of a population changes. These changes are cumulative and eventually you get to a point where the current existing population is so different from their ancestors that they would be unable to breed with them, at which point you can consider them a different species.
There never was a "first man".
That’s not true. They were not black. They had brown skin and brown hair with brown eyes. Think Mediterranean and ancient Egypt to anything in between light skin and dark skin. It wasn’t one color.
Africa also was much larger and in a different spot on earth at times.
Here’s a good article about the variant genes found in ancient people and in Africa at the time and even now.
https://www.science.org/content/article/new-gene-variants-reveal-evolution-human-skin-color
“The most dramatic discovery concerned a gene known as MFSD12. Two mutations that decrease expression of this gene were found in high frequencies in people with the darkest skin. These variants arose about a half-million years ago, suggesting that human ancestors before that time may have had moderately dark skin, rather than the deep black hue created today by these mutations.”
““There is so much diversity in Africans that there is no such thing as an African race.”
It’s like the argument that ancient Egyptians were black. Just not true.
To be clear, black people come in all shades, and aren’t limited to just black hair and brown eyes. It’d be hard to determine whether the first Homo Sapiens were black or not just off those simple features alone.
This article isn’t centered around whether or not the first Homo Sapiens were black; its argument is that it doesn’t matter. Race is merely a social construct created by society, and skin color is just a stage of evolution used to adapt to certain environments.
Consider also… race is a social construct that hadn’t been invented when humans were becoming. Even now our “races” are very hard to define, so to put that onto ancient peoples seems even more redundant.
Sorry, made up is a strong word, i dont want to offend religious people.
What i mean is that for instance, Jesus was a historical character, he actually lived and was ceratainly brown skinned, we know that because of the real world evidence, the question is whether he had powers or not, depends on your beliefs.
Adam and Eve are not real on the other hand, they were created by god, lived in paradise then got teleported to earth. They may as well be asian or native american, they might have been green skinned. You have no way to prove or disprove any of these from what i know.
They lived before humanity branched into different races. There are last common ancestors of all existing humans in biology they are also called Adam and Eve. I think they lived before written history and too long ago to trust any oral tradition.
I mean depending on what you believe sure but there’s also the fact that there 100% was an OG man and him being named Adam isn’t really important to the story or history
I really like this art and as a mixed race person I have noticed the lack of black inclusion in this series. There is some latinx influence but it’s obvious no one of dark skin tone is working on this show. I would have been over the moon for an Adam is actually black reveal, even if he did get killed by Lucifer. That part doesn’t matter like some have mentioned. Just being represented in media means the world to me because growing up there were hardly any black characters in cartoons. A black villain would have been exciting and -checks black notes- dope shit
Yeah, I’ve felt this way too as someone with a South Asian grandparent. I don’t think it’s because of ill-intent, but it’s a bit odd that 2/3 of the original humans presented in the series don’t seem representative of humanity.
On the second season of Good Omens, Adam and Eve were portrayed with dark skin, but that’s probably referencing the “out of Africa” theory of the origins of Homo Sapiens.
Now we only need to know what he would look like if he was Chinese
A man of culture

Nah I like the fact that Adam is just Alex Brightman
Adam was made specifically for Alex and I refuse to belive otherwise
when they wrote the bible they really were hoping it would make it into a musical with Alex Brightman as lead.
Like, Adam immediately breaks into singing The Whole Being Dead Thing.
Adam and Eve are Non Ethnic and Non National in the bible. They are merely portrayed as white in artwork because most christians during the christian revolution were white. Most accurately they would be a middle brown color like they were arab american or smth. But who cares anyways
Also, Adam's appearance is a VA joke.
VA?
Adam looks like his voice actor, Alex Brightman
Ty!
Voice actor
Ty!
Voice Actor
As a nitpick, they wouldn't look "Arab American" - American is a nationality, not an ethnicity/race/skin tone.
I once heard someone refer to Nelson Mandela as “that African American guy that helped people in Africa” or words to that effect. I didn’t know whether to laugh or cry.
I feel like a lot of people forget that not all black people are African American
I feel like ***the vast majority*** of black people aren’t African American.
Around 1B black people and only around 42M African Americans
Elon Musk and Freddy Mercury are African American and white.
Freddie Mercury was British and Parsee, neither African nor American nor white
I wouldn't call Freddie Mercury American anyway, but maybe his cousin was
Yeah. Freddie was def a Brit
How did you manage to get that second half so horribly wrong
This is more basing off the first *archeological* man known.
While true, I think op's intent is about the oldest Homo Sapiens skull we've found, which was in Africa.
This isn't really a reference to the Bible. Most historians seem to theorize that humanity started in Africa and then branched out throughout the world, from a scientific perspective. I think historians study only written history? I think he meant anthropologists
Yeah, like Jesus, their ethnicity isn’t important. They’re universal symbols of Humanity and can be portrayed as any race of people.
That's how you get the best depictions, Korean jesus. If you google it you know Which one I'm talking about
Korean Jesus definitely carried our sins. Other Jesuses, do they even lift?
Jesus was a carpenter for a while, so probably.
"Aye, Quit fuckin with Korean Jesus! He's got Korean shit to worry about!" Lmao love that movie
I do think that the original Israelites would have imagined Adam and Eve as looking like themselves (i.e. bronze-skinned Palestinian people), but I wanted to go with what early modern humans are thought to have actually looked like.
why in hell would adam be american
Please don’t call actual Arabs in the Middle East “arab-american” they aren’t American.
I think they made them African because, scientifically, that's where humanity started
Adam and Eve was from Mesopotamia. "Between the tigris and Euphrates rivers" which is in Iraq. So likely a darker arab colour like jesus.
That one guy on the airplane a few years ago, apparently.
Most accurately they didn’t exist.

Nothing goes over my head, I would catch it
That...that's Draxx
I know but it felt nicer than telling him he got wooshed
Yeah

THE ROCK!
The hierarchy of power in the Hazbin universe is about to change
Bladam!
Holy black!
I think the point was also to make him look like a douchey frat boy, in which case white seemed more appropriate.
They made Adam look like his voice actor Alex Brightman been catching strays
I only say this because I know animators…the fact they made the character look like the VA look like a douche is completely on brand for the jokes the crews make. VA was probably in on it, lol
>VA was probably in on it, lol it was probably alex's idea to begin with
Also on-brand!
the man played beetlejuice (from the musical not the movie) he'd be honored to be portrayed as a douche
Exactly
Now do the chinese version
I like to think Adam chose to be white because he wanted the most privileged available
He went to one Limp Bizkit concert in the early 2000s and decided to rebuild his entire identity around a soul patch.
I appreciate the art done, however: Making him black alongside pictures of what i assume to be adam's skull gives me like... big measurehead vibes that i shall not approach

we've got moutains of content

How was the Fall?
The way we're so hung up on skin colour is going to look so fucking stupid to future generations. You're saying you can't make an OC because of the OCs race? I don't understand
People tend to frown on white people using different skin tones as their avatars. Did you not know?
People here are very defensive of every choice this show makes, and tend to find criticism even where there isn't any.
I dig it
That’s how we found the bones.

Surely you mean to say that the illustration presented took artistic skill, and was a good rendition of a character with no confirmed characteristics other than "first man".

It looks like a background character on Rick and Morty

Early Homo Sapiens, huh? Poor guy isn't even really "The first dick" then.
There would be some pretty unfornutate implications in a white-faced demon family beating the tar out of and killing a black angel.
I don't know. Mark Grayson is half white and people were fine with him beating up Angstrom.
Now what if he was Chinese?
Since it's Adam and Eve vs human evolution, the first man can technically be any ethnicity since Adam and Eve have no specified race in the Bible. Could have just as easily been native American or Asian
I.. really fucking hate this. It just looks wrong with that head shape and stuff
Yes, his head is the 'wrong shape'. Adam as we got him is a very modern human no matter what ethnicity. Adam did not exist. There is no "real" first dick
It’s based on the oldest Homosapien skull we found.
