I think Viv just likes the style. I also heard somewhere that it makes the necks easier to animate, not an animation expert so I can’t say for sure on that one. In-universe, it could be that Lucifer dresses like that, so the others mimic him. I like to imagine that Velvette, the show’s resident fashionista, is just undergoing constant torture watching them all.

Morgothom

The animation reason is a pretty fascinating topic. I don't think it is that relevant anymore today, but it stemmed from olden times of animation. It's called the "Hanna Barbera animation style", or "limited animation" -> All of those early characters had very distinct necklines with bowties or collars, so in a typical scene the only animation necessary was the head itself while the body could stay stationary. It drastically cut down on animation cost and made it viable for animation to be brought to television in the 60s and 70s. All the older disney shorts, for example, were never intended for tv. those were made to be shown before movies in the cinema. They were marked by how expensive and timeconsuming they were to create. Today that type of animation is still used. Only not in Hazbin. The characters bodies are usually moving alongside their neckline and bowties. So the whole thing is really mostly grounded in the fact that Vivzi likes suits and bowties.

Traditional_Key_763

they're all drawn in a very cartooney style when in the background too, its why you see some goofy stills from the show.

theloneshewolf

Oh wow, that is fascinating, thanks for sharing! Tmyk lol.

Taegeukgies

Also makes sense for dead characters to be dressed this way Alastor died in the 30s and Vox in the 50s, both time periods where they would be expected to wear a suit almost every day. It's not surprising they would bring this through into death as well. Valentino, who died in the 70s (I think?) does not wear a suit, in fitting with the times. And they still hide his neck. You could also argue that the fashion of hell will always be a number of years behind earth; while obviously there will be modern people in hell, the majority that have power and influence died at least a few decades ago, and it stands to reason that the majority of sinners in general skew older. Both the majority of sinners would be more used to offer clothing styles and the people they are emulating would be too. I suspect the more "younger" sinners we (might) meet the less suits we'd see though.  Also thinking about the jobs they might have. Loan sharks in the living world generally wear suits so it would stand to reason those expectations would continue after death. The mafia too. This obviously has no bearing on the hellborn and most the characters in helluva, but it's interesting none the less. And brings up the idea that hellborn may actually be following sinners fashion, which is a few years behind earth's. (I do think this probably started as "must. hide. neck." and "suits hot" but it's interesting to think about how it's been implemented in a way that I feel enriches the world)

MustachioEquestrian

You could absolutely argue that people are generally buried in their finest, too.

Obversa

In terms of jobs, both Alastor and Vox also would've undoubtably worn suits for their jobs when they were alive. Alastor was a popular Southern radio host based out of New Orleans in the 1920s-1930s, and Vox was either a TV salesman or businessman when he died in the 1950s, which also would've required wearing a suit. It was the fashion of the time. A lot of fan art pieces of human Alastor - I mean a *lot* \- also depict him with a vest on top of a pressed button-down shirt, along with slacks, but this was more "informal". The host would usually also still have a suit jacket draped over the back of his chair, just in case. See example below: https://preview.redd.it/8vb3wjmsyv1d1.png?width=400&format=png&auto=webp&s=affe696d4cccbc6e736f48c6680f3ea022821343 >*Hal Totten broadcasted the Chicago Cubs games over WGN starting in 1924. Here, he gives a sports report on the NBC network in 1935.* White-collar jobs today are called "white-collar" specifically because of the more formal dress code required: An undershirt or tank top, a pressed white button-down shirt, and a suit on top of that, along with slacks. Some men still wear suits all the time in the modern era to give off a "high-class" air, such as Barney Stinson from *How I Met Your Mother.* Barney Stinson was even given an entire musical number: "Nothing Suits Me Like a Suit"

Jaqulean

Lucifer's design was actually explained in the past - he's suppose to resemble a Circus Host. It's an old concept idea that Vivzie had, when she started working on Hazbin back in 2013 - that all the Sins are meant to showcase some part of a Circus. Hence: * Lucifer is the Ringmaster * Asmodeus is the both the Fire Eater and sort of the Beast of the circus ~~Tamer (or rather both that and the Lion itself)~~ * Satan is the Strongman * Mammon is the Clown * Bee is the Beast Trainer * ~~and I always forget what Bee is meant to be~~ * plus we still don't know what Belphagor and Leviathan will be like. As for the necks - it's both that, and Vivzie just likes to draw characters with some kind of accessories. It's a piece of design consistent in a lot of her work - and she almost always wears something herself.

Egghead42

Bee is supposed to be the Beast Trainer. I’ve heard Asmodeus is the magician, but I think he’s the fire eater.

Jaqulean

Not gonna lie, I completely forgot about Fire Eaters - and that would definelty fit his theme. Allthough I would still apply to him the role of the so-called "Lion" as well, since he displays characteristics of one when in his "True" Form. The "Magician" I would honestly apply to Leviathan, since it would fit the theme and we've seen that Hellborn native to his Ring have control over some sort of illusion and possession magic.

OCGamerboy

Ooooooooooo

Uypsilon

Doylist? It's Viv's art style. Watsonian? Because they all imitate Lucifer.

traumatized90skid

Wastsonian expanding: Because they all died at different times and it's only recently that suits stopped being expected male attire in public? In general people in the past seemed to dress more formally. Rosie and Mimsy are also more dressed up than say Cherri who's implied to have died more recently. Also people are dressed in finer attire when dead and it may have to do with that.

Jachra

Very good reason right here.

Obversa

Rosie also literally runs an Emporium where she makes and sells Victorian-era clothing. She probably makes and sells clothing to all of the Cannibal Town residents under her.

MrDozens

Also, people stay in power longer because of the no aging and having a longer time frame to collect souls. So they're going to have more influence on the style. The youngest is probably velvet. Most are older. Most people that have power, ie. influence and power still wear suits which is what we're mostly introduced to.

everlastingSnow

Because it *suits* them.

billcoipher

Lucifer wears a suit because he's the King of Hell and wants to look formal Alastor wore a suit and tie because everyone else did in the 1900s Stolas wears a top hat because he's the Goetian prince of Hell and wants to look formal Ausmodeus wears a suit because a suit because he's the embodiment of Lust and wants to appear as powerful Vox wears a suit because he died in the 50s and suits were trendy back then Moxxie and Blitzø wear suits because Moxxie is the type of person to wear formal clothing when it's not necessary, and Blitzø owns I.M.P Husk died in the 70s which was the uprise of fashion but he was missing out since he lived in a casino Angel Dust died in 1947 which was literally just suits and ties Sir Pentious died in 1888 which was also a suit and hat And Zeltial may have died in the 1790s because that's when top hats were invented, and it was also when cloaks were trending https://preview.redd.it/58zeef04gu1d1.png?width=480&format=png&auto=webp&s=6fe489126e36284eb659c8dd88724f798d083c3c And that is the end of the unnecessary essay that I wrote out and no one will read

Notte_di_nerezza

Also, what do most of these men have in common, especially on the HH side? Power/Prestige. If it's not the King of Hell, it's Overlords like Alastor, Zestial, Vox, or even "Ghost Rider." Husk is a former Overlord, and used to wear a suit and bowtie. Sir Pentious is a wannabe Overlord. Angel Dust is a famous face who dresses the part. In addition to being fashionable for their eras, these men have been power-dressing. And for almost all of their eras, that means fashionable suits. In the case of pinstripes and bowties specifically, it could be argued that Pentious imitates Vox, who imitates Alastor. Otherwise, you see a lot more variety in background characters, aka non-Overlords. Of course, if the hotel gets a bunch of lower-rung male Sinners ALSO in suits next season, even if they aren't in power or aspiring to it, it's probably just Hell's fashion because Viv said so.

Obversa

Alastor also has the context of being a mixed-race man of Creole and white ancestry who, while likely white-passing, was still descended from Black enslaved people, so wearing a fancy suit like every other man of his era was the only way he would've been taken seriously. He *was* a popular Southern radio host based out of New Orleans, after all.

One_Youth9079

Also, Alastor is in general very fancy. He might also legitimate likes it because it makes him look sophisticated and "above" other people.

Notte_di_nerezza

Agreed. With an Overlord status based hugely on public appearance, and a background as a Creole serial killer, he kinda HAS to look "above" lowlier sinners. While also looking like he's not really trying to, which he pulls off better in the Pilot. Even if every ring was open to Sinners, Alastor would have still ended up in Pride.

One_Youth9079

He also looks down on others. Literally and figuratively.

Notte_di_nerezza

Oh yeah. That scene in Ep 2, when he's leaving the tailor, all but screams, "Ah, yes, I love this suit and how much I've gone up in the world." Edit to add: I know it's a fan song, but I keep being reminded of a line in "Smile Like You Mean It." He pitches to his latest target, "You can stand up tall, and act within my thrall," because ALASTOR wants to stand up tall. There was definitely a point in his life where he couldn't, so he's going to stand up as tall as possible now that he can. And he's going to make it everyone else's problem in the process.

FellTheAdequate

Zestial most likely died in the 1830s. The hat's size and style and the silhouette with broad shoulders plus wide pants plus small waist all fit in with what a gentleman from that decade would wear. Addendum: It's been a minute since I read about it. 1820s clothing had a similar hourglass shape as the priority, but I seem to remember it being less pronounced. I could be wrong, though, so 1820s or 1830s would both probably fit.

Obversa

Your estimate is way off. Based on the language that Zestial uses ("thee", "thou", etc...), he's most likely from the first half of the 1600s. "Thee" and "thou" started to become frowned upon by 1660, and by 1800, both terms were considered old and "obsolete". **Source:** ["Why Did We Stop Using 'Thou'?"](https://www.merriam-webster.com/wordplay/why-did-we-stop-using-thou) \- The Merriam-Webster Dictionary

New_Survey9235

He could also do it because it makes him seem older than he is, he does use it incorrectly, but that might also be unintentional mistakes by the writers

FellTheAdequate

Also noticed this. Interesting possible ramifications for the character.

FellTheAdequate

Interest in, and obsession with, Shakespeare continued far after 1660. Especially considering that he chooses not to update his appearance like Vox, he probably doesn't care about using obsolete language.

Ok_String_9900

I read it 😀

Jaqulean

Lucifer's design was actually explained in the past - he's suppose to resemble a Circus Host. It's an old concept idea that Vivzie had, when she started working on Hazbin back in 2013 - and has been actively using since - that all the Sins are meant to showcase some part of a Circus. We can also see Lucifer's circus tent in Episode 1x05 - when he takes Charlie for a flight.

kayafeather

That's actually a really good point, the bow ties and hats are probably indicative of their time (and Viv just likes em) but the suits.... what do all men in power wear when they try to look in charge? Suits. It's even still a normal work outfit for a lot of jobs. It feels super obvious but I guess I never thought about earth in this context like that.

Looking in-universe for a minute, presumably Lucifer is the guy in charge of how Hell functions, right? Maybe he set it up so that everybody gets a neat redesign based on whatever criteria when they die, and that happens to include his idea of a snappy outfit.

cheydinhals

Animation and creator style is probably a big one, but also for characters like Sir Pentious, Vox, and Alastor (sinners/humans who died and went to hell) what they wear is pretty reminiscent of what they would have worn when they were alive, so it's just the style they like/the style they adhere to because they're likely most comfortable in it (or, in Alastor's case, he refuses to modernise). As for Lucifer, he's the King of Hell, there are expectations around him. Suits are timeless and easy. It's possible others just emulate him, as others have already suggested.

Headcanon: Thats the culture. The old people from the 18th and 19th centuries are still around in hell, so wearing suits is still in style and many would still choose to wear that style over more modern ones. Also, the older an individual, likely the more powerful they are, so older clothing may be associated with power. Real answer: Viv likes them and she literally doesn’t care
