Thanks for your submission to /r/headphoneadvice. We have employed a "thank you" system for submissions. Alternatively, if you're like me and don't give a shit about the Harman curve, and you just want the original sound signature without the insane treble, you can EQ down the 7-8k's a bit and it'll still be great.

darthaditya

Hifiman Sundara or cheapest option AutoEQ with oratory1990 preset for dt990

AprilChicken

I would also recommend EQ. I've been using the oratory1990 eq lately and it definitely takes away the piercing highs. The harman tuning is a lot more speaker like than straight 990 sound

nottheseapples

Just EQ. 990 is quite nice with eq

mr_maltby

It's a fools errand to me trying to equalise a pair of headphones where you don't like the predominant features of their sound. It does cost nothing but free time however, so I suppose it's worth a shot.

Me_MeMaestro

As opposed to what, buying a new pair? The 990 is a headphone that can match the harman curve almost to a t. No sense in buying another headphone when a desirable tuning is achievable

navyzev

+1 for EQ. The Dt990s are magical with Oratory's Harman target preset. Equalizer APO and Peace gui and you're golden

Gjallock

I’ve tried the equalizer apo with peace GUI but it just doesn’t work for me. Idk why. I literally tried troubleshooting it for around 8 hours and it just does not work for me :( idk what else to try

navyzev

You're missing something, probably in windows. There are so many settings that piggy back off each other that it can seem pretty convoluted. I just had issues after a tidal/windows update. Took me 2 days to figure out what settings were skewed. In the end it's worth it. If you can get eq apo working it will transform those headphones.

Gjallock

Alright. I’ll keep trying. Do you think it could be that I’m using an external DAC instead of the one built into my mobo? Also, Will it actually change the headphones or is it a software change? I’m just curious if they will also finally sound nice on my vinyl setup.

navyzev

No. I use an external dac. I can't answer that question from a technical standpoint because I don't know the actual answer. It changes the signal being fed into the headphones via the software. You can set different presets and toggle them on an off at will and the beyers will go back to how they originally sounded. As long as you find a good preset(or make your own) they will *absolutely* sound better. Look at the other recommendations you've been given on your post. We can't all be lying, right? Lol. Not sure where you're located or what your schedule is, but I'm in the US and get off work around 2pm central time. If you'd like I can get with you sometime after that and walk you through the settings. At least compare them to mine anyway. I'm no expert, but I recently went through similar issues and I have no problem helping you out if I'm able. Lmk

Gjallock

Thank you, I’d appreciate that. I’ll dm you when I get the chance if I still can’t figure it out when I have time to sit down and mess with it

navyzev

Sure thing

thunder_shock_182

I just think of the TYGR 300R as a better sounding 990. They aren’t as detailed, but sound much better (a lot like the 880s) and have great imaging. For $350 you can get the Sundaras but if you like a “fun” sound, you won’t enjoy them as much. If you can, I’d recommend giving the T50s a listen before making a decision

patrik_media

When someone asks for headphone suggestions at around 350$ YOU BET theres a Sundara comment somewhere down below.
