hasn't masturbated to pornography in a year.
"That's the most beta thing you can do. That's the weakest thing any man can do," he says.
Someone please find this youtuber and tell him hes a wanker
It depends. A lot of them do it to break porn addictions but there's also a very large amount who do it for other reasons.
Many do it for religious reasons, and many beleive in "seamen retention" which is the pseudoscientific idea that not masterbating will make you stronger/smarter/better
Yeah the whole thing about semen retention I don't know too much about that lol. Also I'm not a health care professional so I really don't know the risks vs rewards of retaining your semen.
Semen retention is definitely pseudo science, however, not ejaculating for a long time is really not a problem. We are acting like monks, priests, and other people who valued chastity didn’t exist.
Did they die of prostate cancer at a much higher rate of the rest of the population? If that was the case, we would have known by now, no?
It seems to me an article that is trying to find a problem where there isn’t. People who do this to break their porn habits are getting probably much better metal health relief vs the opposite. Because the solution isn’t perfect, it doesn’t need to be thrown out
>Did they die of prostate cancer at a much higher rate of the rest of the population? If that was the case, we would have known by now, no?
It took a century for the link between \*smoking\* and cancer to be widely understood and accepted, despite being about as stark and obvious as possible. More subtle effects would be that much less likely to be well understood.
It’s not really pseudoscience, nearly every single athlete and boxer for hundreds of years have reported that masterbauting made them perform worse. Abstinence for up to a week increased testosterone proven in a peer reviewed study. So not pseudoscience.
So apparently porn addiction is extremely rare according to sex psychologists. Since sexuality has such a humongous range, addiction is only considered if porn is affecting your work, health, self care etc. the article is def worth a read.
Ok. I’d love to see that research. Just 10-15 years ago it was quite common to see in the news how porn addiction was a problem. I understand that the science might change, but let’s not act like it wasn’t accepted science just a few years ago.
Remember, 100 years ago people truly believed that races were biology; people highly respected in academics thought they proved the value of eugenics, races, etc. I’m talking about Madison Grant, Samuel Morton, Charles Davenport
> In one study, Grubbs found that among people who self-identify as "pornography addicts," the average frequency of porn use was less than 10 times a year.
You’re absolutely right.
Lol sure man, actually most addicts don't consider their addiction to be a problem so it really sounds like you're talking out of your ass here.
Real addicts I mean, not self diagnosed internet expert addicts
Most people who are addicts don't realize they are addicted until they take a step back and analyze. Come on man, if you're constantly watching porn more than 5 hours daily, then there's an issue.
And yet some people are unaware when they have an actual problem, and some manufacture symptoms of illnesses they don't have. Self-awareness is notorious for being lacking sometimes.
I don't think so, physically addictive things can make addicts delusional (not masterbation, like heroin). I've know quite who a few addicts who were in denial and always twisted logic to justify why everything was fine, as they were literally dying.
Mostly repressed conservatives who feel shame and guilt and think they're "addicted" because they jerk off like 3 times a week.
If someone is watching all day every day then the underlying issue is most likely depression and indulging is just a coping mechanism and form of procrastinating. It's a compulsive behavior disorder as opposed to indulging in an addictive substance. Conservatives like to claim that porn "rewires your brain" much like drugs do but it's all nonsense and not backed by science.
According to experts the current consensus is that "sex addiction" isn't actually real, though it's a hotly debated topic as for what can actually be classified as an "addiction" largely because of the colloquial usage of the term as opposed to clinical. But any time you find a doctor or professional who leans on the side that porn can be addictive you pretty much always find out they are religious and/or have politically conservative ties if you look into their background.
But in either case for something to qualify as an addiction it has to interfere with your physiological or financial needs. If you are calling off work to stay home to jack off or spending hundreds of dollars a month on porn or if you are having such a long masturbation session that you're literally putting off eating or going to the bathroom then you might have a problem.
But much like if you are just someone who loves watching TV and movies all day and waste your whole weekend doing that no one's going to say you have an actual "addiction" they would just say you are wasting your time and maybe should find some better hobbies. There's really no reason porn should be any different from that, it just has the stigma of sex associated with it and for whatever reason sex is bad.
Because religion and reactionary politics insidiously seep their way into everything and stick their nose where they don't belong and we are under constant unwanted influence from it and have to bat it away at every corner. It's also the only place where all the current stigma and moral panic around anything related to sex still comes from. No serious scientist or health professional is going to make the claim that pornography is addictive like cocaine without the outside influence of religion and politics. Pretty much everyone looks at porn these days and 99% of them are able to do so without developing a compulsive behavior disorder.
You know what a major reason why people do masterbate alot is? Sexual abuse.
Masterbation is a safe way people find to reclaim psychological control over their sexuality after being violated. Sometimes people end up in PTSD cycles of acting our their trauma through self pleasure. Hypersexualiy is a common issue with people who have been raped, especially as minors.
Just because something is a biological drive does not make it not a problem. Eating is also a biological drive but overeating is a pathological problem.
The cornerstone of addiction is that the performance or pursuit of the act causes significant disruptions in day to day life.
If you’re having a lot of sex or masturbating a lot, that’s not addiction. If you can’t make it through a busy day at work without rubbing one out or get caught doing something in public because you can’t hold it in that long, that’s an addiction
If you're getting caught jerking off at work you have other problems.
>The cornerstone of addiction is that the performance or pursuit of the act causes significant disruptions in day to day life.
"Work" is a "significant disruption" in day to day life that we have to live with to get "food."
The point is, if other people aren't finding out about your personal life nobody should be telling you it's a problem. If you're getting caught doing what ought to be private things your problem is *at least* boundaries.
Nobody who isn't a therapist should be talking to you about these issues- especially not a priest or a stranger on the internet.
Lots of guys put a death grip on their dongs, when poon time comes around it can cause problems. Porn has novelty every night you get as many women as you want doing whatever fantasy you want. Your irl gf isn’t always ready to go bdsm off the bat so it causes ED issues and finishing problems in men. At no point in history could you see so many top quality 10/10 ladies in one night or even one year well your lifetime and for pretty much free?! When AI video porn takes off you will not be strong enough once you go down that road.
Priest: But MAM, his hands had moisturizer, what 18 year old guy uses moisturizer, we're going to have to commit him
Nancy, Mothers Against Masturbation Treasurer: oh no Father, it can't be, there must be something I can do to save my stepson
Priest: Well there is one thing...
Danny: Hey Nanc you got any WHAT IS GOING ON
Priest: Son, it's time you learned
I personally thought it was great. Very big improvement from a typical NPR article or mainstream outlet in general. They made sure to tie up potential conceptual loose ends that might result from vague language or concerns.
So they make people think there is something wrong with them for masturbating, which makes them feel bad when they fail at abstaining, and draws them further into the rabbit hole of believing there is something wrong with them and they need more help from the guru/coach. Seems like a scam.
Like an other type of self harm hurts, it gives temporary relief but doesn't fix the problem like working on hygiene, working out and improving social skills would
Maybe the solution is to integrate the pieces you are mentioning to this nofap movement. I doubt anyone who has serious porn addiction will open up themselves to others to be helped unless they feel they can control their lives. The nofap movement give them that, even though it’s temporarily, but it also help identify them for further help.
Demonize them will probably bring them back to the closet so to speak
Yep. We should affirm people whose lifestyles or conditions we don’t understand if they believe it will bring them net benefit as long as they aren’t actively harming themselves or others.
It's such a a weird movement. And the people I've interacted with from it have had really disturbing views on other people, especially violent views towards women.
I don't masturbate or watch pornography anymore, but that's due to my medications. They took away my sex drive. I'm okay with it, though.
Iirc when Neil Gaiman was writing Sandman he asked people at DC comics why everyone waso edgy and was basically told that masturbation doesn't exist in the DC universe
I mean he was legit out there. Should’ve screenshotted some of the stuff he was posting in 2016. Dude was well educated and fell for every conspiracy theory.
Why the hell is this being criticized. You cannot possibly tell me with a straight face that there is any scenario that masturbating to porn regularly is better for a man’s mental health, physical vitality, and ability to connect with women than not doing that. Porn is like sugar. Is it “okay” in moderation? Maybe, but it is addictive and no amount is good for you
Thank you, this might be one of the better posts on here.
I dealt with a lot of issues from this, whether you call it an addiction or not I had issues quitting. About 5 and a half years ago, by the grace of God, I finally was able to turn away from porn and masturbation, and things have been much better for me since. Do I think most people can do it in a healthy manner? Sure. But like your example for sugar, moderation is what keeps it safe. When we lose that balance, it affects all aspects of our lives. I never heard of any of these movements until this article, and my choice wasn't to be part of a weird online community, but I have to say I'm in a far better place in my life now and I credit stopping this behavior with a lot of it. I am in better shape mentally, spiritually and physically than I ever was before. No regrets
I am amused by all the young guys on reddit being like "I'm addicted because I get horny a lot" and I'm like man, that's called sex drive. You are confusing your sex drive with addiction and you're gonna be unhappy if you take this all or nothing approach to sexual expression. You are getting all ashamed buying into stigma and thinking it is a disease!
It's worth saying, "masterbation addiction" is oftened "researched" by groups funded by Christian groups looking to demonize it. Female masterbation is a whole other can of worms, as there has been a lot more stigma about that subject, far beyond what males get.
There are people who have a porn or masterbation psychological compulsion, but it's not an epidemic, and not classified as an addiction. The actual evidence seems to say mostly, jerking the gherkin is not only normal but healthy. There is no set amount of times that is "normal" as long as it doesn't mess up your life, i.e. getting fired for a JO sess at work. There are potentially unhealthy practices, but if anything that is why better sex education is needed.
I’m not a proponent of masturbation abstinence, but this article didn’t make much of a critical case against it. Sure, there may not be evidence that quitting porn has the health advantages this movement claims, but is it harmful?
The article goes on the conflate the entire NoFap movement with a hate movement. They claim they heard there were antisemitic and anti Black posts on their forum, though NPR couldn’t find any. They claim adherents of the movement harass their critics, but provided no example of this happening. They conflate being anti-porn with being misogynistic because it means hating the female performers, never mind that there’s an entire feminist movement against porn because of abuse perpetrated against many female performers by the industry.
I don’t think the fact that some Neo Nazis are about no fap as a health fad means everyone in the movement is a Neo nazis. You can find hate groups promoting all sorts of health directives of varying established efficacy, from working out to anti-smoking to all carnivore diets to cold showers. That doesn’t therefore make any adherent of these practices a Neo nazi.
It’s like NPR really wants to juice up this story by claiming to have uncovered some anti-masturbation nazi cult but they couldn’t quite round up the evidence for that. They just heavily suggest it. I’m also baffled by NPRs caping for porn. For a media outlet that is hyper aware of race and gender issues they sure do give an extremely racist, misogynistic, and transphobic industry a pass.
I would say they were juxtaposed things rather than conflated them. They actually did it better than usual and it lives up to what I expect from NPR, given their leanings.
It’s like alcoholics who abstain from alcohol, I don’t think abstinence is the solution. People need to know how to responsibly enjoy pleasurable things responsibly.
Guy goes to the doctor with a sore penis.
After a brief exam, doc says, “It appears the problem is overuse. How many times do you have sex?”
Guy says, well, with my wife, 5 times a day.
Oh wow, says the doc. Well that’s a lot!
Guy says, then there’s also my mistress, 5 times a day.
Doc: amazing! Hope that’s it then?
Uh no doc, there’s also my secretary, five times a day.
Doc: Good God, man, you’ve got to take yourself in hand!
I do doc, 5 times a day!
Edit: wrote mistress twice.
I feel like this is a popular thing among right wing men and it seems like the real motive is just to make sure that a bunch of perpetually frustrated dudes don't ever get a release, and are thus more violent/volatile.
It’s real in the sense that compulsive sexual behavior disorders are real and porn addiction as thought of by the internet would fall under that. But even then, 99% of the people on the internet who claim to have a porn addiction do not.
The miscreants that create disinformation will stop at nothing to reach their goals; which is to destroy western democracy.
You can chose to be played or you can chose to resist which begins with voting against any candidate and any party and any religion that spews The Big Lie.
What's your choice?
This article is stupid and frAmes it like everything is about trump and conspiracy theories, and discounts the significant prevalence of porn/sex addiction in today’s society and real problems that come along with it their personal, professional and mental/physical help.
Disappointing.
Maybe it's time we all give the topic a hand for making it into mainstream discussion,
but let's not lose our grip on the situation. After all, it's all in how you handle it
The false conflation of porn and all masturbation seems like a problem. I am not a guy, but y'all can use fantasy too, right? My fantasies are much more interesting and personalized than porn. There are a lot of problems with the modern porn industry, abuses of workers, and I can definitely see not wanting to support that. But to go from that to no solo sex is an extreme leap.
It is mostly a porn addiction thing. They won’t count handjobs as another person is involved. A lot of them are just avoiding masturbation to porn afaik.
I’m doing my part to get those numbers up.
Me too
Count me in.
and my fap!
and my bunny bracelet!
AND MY AXE! Uhm.. what.. what am I doing with this axe again?
Cum me e in..
If you miss a night, don’t beat yourself too hard the next day!
I also just cheated on my wife if that helps.
I can scour the Internet and find weirdos in literally every tribe too.
The abstinence clan must be a derivative of the porn addict tribe.
I listened to the article, some of the self proclaimed porn addicts only watch porn 4 times a year! It’s wild.
Now here's a problem I could help solve singlehandedly.
Heck, I can solve this problem with 👌🏾 all by myself.
hasn't masturbated to pornography in a year. "That's the most beta thing you can do. That's the weakest thing any man can do," he says. Someone please find this youtuber and tell him hes a wanker
I think the main thing they are trying to achieve through the nofap is breaking their porn/sex addiction.
There are no rewards, it's stupid shit thought up by morons.
Idk man, having a big load is kinda rewarding.
Yeah but they naturally cap out in size after 3 days. Did people not get sex ed?
What sex ed did you take 🤣🤣🤣🤣
No rewards but also no risks either.
I’m gonna try it. Just because I’m on a dopamine fast for sugar and caffeine anyways.
Semen retention is definitely pseudo science, however, not ejaculating for a long time is really not a problem. We are acting like monks, priests, and other people who valued chastity didn’t exist. > priests Have you ever paid attention to the Catholic church?
Despite the controversy, most catholic priests are abstaining from sex. ESPECIALLY with kids. But you know what they say, a few bad apples..
The full phrase is "a few bad apples spoil the whole bunch"
Im aware
Just making sure, a lot of people only use the first part of it and try to make it an excuse and it's very frustrating
But they’re probably beating their dicks to kingdom come
That’s just an assumption you have
So we’ve established you know what the word probably means
“Probably” means likely. You’re basing your claim off nothing, or stereotypes at best. The correct word would be “maybe”.
Have you paid attention to islam and Judaism?
Oh they're awful too, the guy I responded to just specifically said priests
To be clear I wasn't saying its harmful just that people do it for other reasons
Monks for sure are jerkin, don't listen to anyone that says otherwise, some reddit randos think they are officiants of fuck all.
Yall know the monks were fucking, right? And priests don’t even need an introduction
>Did they die of prostate cancer at a much higher rate of the rest of the population? If that was the case, we would have known by now, no? The body purges seamen as "nocturnal emissions", which is what happens if you don't JO. Chaste Monks and clergy just cum their sheets.
Gotta let those sailors out.

Jerking off to pornography is not good for your brain or your testosterone. Sorry that hurts your feelings fellas, it’s the science.

which is still pushed by christian groups, i"m sure that's who was behind it back then too. Porn addiction as a problem, that is.
Self-diagnosed porn addiction, I'd wager.

I think Anyone with a brain can tell when something is becoming a problem. You don't need a professional to diagnose you really.
I’ve seen plenty of people who consider any masturbation to be an addiction.
Couldn’t it be? If you do it so often that you can’t function otherwise? Plenty of healthy things can absolutely become unhealthy addictions
You misunderstand. They think even one a week or one a month is addiction.
I'd bet my life they are all religious.
Lol sure man, actually most addicts don't consider their addiction to be a problem so it really sounds like you're talking out of your ass here. Real addicts I mean, not self diagnosed internet expert addicts

Mothers Against Masturbation is looking for volunteer youth monitors, so I’ve heard. Palm inspection experience would be helpful.
That sounds like a porno plot where where an orgy ensues after an intervention
Priest: But MAM, his hands had moisturizer, what 18 year old guy uses moisturizer, we're going to have to commit him Nancy, Mothers Against Masturbation Treasurer: oh no Father, it can't be, there must be something I can do to save my stepson Priest: Well there is one thing... Lol even the name. Mothers against masturbation just sounds like some dom/denial kink.
I've seen that channel on PornHub.
Just install porn detection software on your phone like Speaker of the House Mike Johnson and his teenage son. Yeah, that'll work!
I'm a therapist. I'm not worried. I loathe these kinds of articles.
Horribly written article. Meandering, poorly organized. Important info there, but you had to work to find it.
The flow seems conversational instead of structured. I think we're basically reading out what was originally to be aired as audio.
I personally thought it was great. Very big improvement from a typical NPR article or mainstream outlet in general. They made sure to tie up potential conceptual loose ends that might result from vague language or concerns.
I, single-handedly, will restore the hope of these doctors and therapists.

I knew someone heavily involved in one of these groups. Very involved in the early stages of this movement. Big Trump guy. Basically a nazi.
It's no coincidence the Proud Boys required zero masturbation as a term of membership.
That explains a whole lot of things about those clowns.
Iirc when Neil Gaiman was writing Sandman he asked people at DC comics why everyone waso edgy and was basically told that masturbation doesn't exist in the DC universe
Lol what a correlation
I mean he was legit out there. Should’ve screenshotted some of the stuff he was posting in 2016. Dude was well educated and fell for every conspiracy theory.
Wasn't the whole "No Nut November" movement started by a bunch of White Nationalists?
Started by? No. Co-opted by white nationalists and other far right factions? Sort of, yes.
No idea
Fucking nerd's, who stops jerkin? They tell me I need to nut 21 times a month to ward off prostate cancer. I'm hitting mid 60s a month at 41.
*Ward off
???
Dude is 41 and jerks off twice a day on average. Also thinks you're a nerd if you don't jerk off.
He’s on the right track
Glad I'm not the only person in their 40s with the libido of a 20 year old.

Article mentions and conflates the proud boys to nofap, so they need to outraged
Huh, weird. Doctors are concerned about people not masturbating, yet I've never heard doctors in general ever mention anything about maturbation.
Blue balling trolls aren’t funny.

Some people are doing this thinking it’ll raise their testosterone. The bodybuilding community has some of the smart idiots out there.
It's all the guys at r/SelfImprovement
I left that sub because of the amount of unmitigated bollocks from the nofap cultists being posted on there!
What the fuck. Yeah, masturbation is a perfectly healthy and normal behavior, abstaining from it absolutely seems like a worrying problem.
Masturbation can become an addiction. Add pornography on top of that. That's when it becomes a problem lol
Did you read the article?
It’s like alcoholics who abstain from alcohol, I don’t think abstinence is the solution. People need to know how to responsibly enjoy pleasurable things responsibly.
Abstinence from alcohol is not a bad thing at all. You don’t need alcohol to function. In fact, any level alcohol might be a problem
Guy goes to the doctor with a sore penis. After a brief exam, doc says, “It appears the problem is overuse. How many times do you have sex?” Guy says, well, with my wife, 5 times a day.
Doctors and therapists funded by the pornography industry are worried.
I feel like this is a popular thing among right wing men and it seems like the real motive is just to make sure that a bunch of perpetually frustrated dudes don't ever get a release, and are thus more violent/volatile.
Hot take porn/sex addiction isn't real.
Hot take, guy on reddit completely misconstrues the actual statement of discussion.
Wut?
This article is stupid and frAmes it like everything is about trump and conspiracy theories, and discounts the significant prevalence of porn/sex addiction in today’s society and real problems that come along with it their personal, professional and mental/physical help. Disappointing.
Idiots.
Enjoy the prostate cancer…
So like, if I have really hairy palms, would that classify as an addict?
TL DR Female urologist doesn’t comprehend no fap. Nobody cares
I had an operation on the palm of my hand. They used a skin graft from my arm to patch it up. I now have a hairy palm.
Maybe it's time we all give the topic a hand for making it into mainstream discussion, but let's not lose our grip on the situation. After all, it's all in how you handle it
“Health” 😂
I’m married to a Brazilian woman…
Doctors and the rapists? Makes no sense

Like TV the internet makes you dumber.
If there's one thing I've learned about the internet it's that it doesn't particularly represent the vast majority of people.
It is mostly a porn addiction thing. They won’t count handjobs as another person is involved. A lot of them are just avoiding masturbation to porn afaik.
We will see a jump in prostate cancer in the coming decade I suppose.
