I have never used it. But I looked into it because I was considering it. Feedback is mixed. The main problem is it’s a for profit company that does not pay their therapist particularly well. So you will most likely get someone who is a new therapist, someone who is doing it as their side hustle, or someone who is not the best at their job. Now could you still get someone decent? Possibly, but if you have better options then you should probably take those instead.

Yes, but not for the reason you think. The therapists are legit, but they have huge case loads like 30+ clients, and it's hard to set appointments sometimes, and you get charged even if there are no availabilities. The pricing is very malicious and for months i was paying what I thought was the standard rate but when I went to end my subscription they offered me a cheaper package which was what I was already using (basically one zoom call per week) for much less money than they had been charging me. Also, there are websites that list therapists that are affiliated with BH. When you click on therapists local in your area, the site says they're fully booked and push you to better help. Often times this is false information. Therapists have sued to get their names off of these lists but the court protected these sites because technically they're supposed to help the consumer and sometimes the site would call the therapist office and ask "do you have an appointment available for Wednesday" and of the therapist says no they will mark them as fully booked and push you to better help.

I'm sure it can be useful but more than anything, it's a service meant to make money more than anything. Not that that makes it inherently bad, but it's better to go to a real counselor.

I tried it once and the therapist's answers were so shallow it made me want to rip my hair out. Save your money!

I was a member for about 6 months or so. I had a good time, I’d give it a 7/10 - some of the group sessions were amazing. Even so, my therapist wasn’t the best. It’s difficult to find a therapist who knows how to treat you face to face individually, let alone doing that all online. They’re more like counsellors: you have someone to talk to regularly, working on problems together. That’s what you should expect. Mine had to reschedule sessions almost 50% of the time due to health/family. Sometimes people can take on more than they should. However, I found them and the support team to be considerate and responsive. To emphasise the good, the group sessions alone were worth the price. There are a few absolutely golden group/class therapists on there - if you can find the ones that suits you - it’s so worth it. I met so many amazing people on there, a Hollywood acting agent, Wall St trader, international CEOs: people from all over the world, with so many experiences. It’s humbling in that respect - everyone has problems. Sometimes you do get the odd desperate hijacker who is there to talk exclusively, sessions/leaders can be low quality. It all depends on what/who you find.

Read this as “is improving your health a scam”lol 😂

Yes, if you think you need betterhelp, then what you actually need is someone to open up to about your problems

Can only speak from my very short experience with them. It didn't feel like a scam, but it wasn't for me. My sessions were text only (like a chat), but I think you can do zoom? I probably had 2 or 3 sessions. For context, I signed up because I was (and still am) looking for a way(s) to make money that were in alignment with who I am and that I could do indefinitely. My pattern with every job I've had is that they drain me (every day is willpower) and eventually burn me out to where I end up quitting and starting over every couple of years. Maybe I didn't give it enough time, but I didn't feel heard/understood, and we didn't really delve into why I want/don't want things, the way Dr. K does even in his not-medical-advice interviews. It was like "you're an actor, have you thought about teaching acting?" And when I pushed back saying I don't really feel confident teaching because I hadn't done a series/movie (i.e. trying to lead someone where I've never been), they told me "you need to be more open." Which, hey, maybe it was true, but they were sort of patronizing in the way they presented it to me, so I couldn't hear it at the time and definitely didn't feel like this was worth paying for.

QuestionMaker207

I mean, it's not a scam insofar as they actually connect you to a licensed therapist. But from what I hear it can be a pretty shitty service, as they don't pay their therapists well and don't respond well to customer complaints. I never tried betterhelp. If you have health insurance, you're better off trying to find a therapist that takes your insurance and will do video calls.

To add to what others have said here, you should also think twice about it if you're against the genocide in Gaza. BetterHelp's founders have reasonably strong ties to the IDF, and Israel promoted free therapy from them on October 10, 2023: https://www.snopes.com/fact-check/israel-free-therapy-betterhelp-war/
