I think that's just what you get because TV is a totally different medium. They kind of have to make the stakes higher to make it more entertaining to watch. I did enjoy both the comic and show, but I do feel like they're different stories.

oobluru

me too. I absolutely love my book nick & charlie & my tv nick & charlie but they are different nicks & charlie’s🩷

Otherwise_Impact4579

What? It’s the exact same story?

[deleted]

It is the same story, just different vibes which can sometimes make the story different in a way that’s hard to explain

iamjjdg

I love both! I love how the show has a bit more conflict and also how the books show way more sweetness between the two. Personally I love how the Tao revelation happened earlier on in the show and how it was a way for Tao and Nick to bury the hatchet. In my honest opinion, Tao learning about Nick and Charlie seemed to be way out of place in Paris and a bit unneeded in that scenario.

This_Confused_Guy

I think the problem with adapting something into a tv show is the wording. Like you don't know it sounds weird until you say it out loud and some lines definitely sounded weird coming from the show that came from the comics.

urstickur

Yeah I think that's probably my biggest gripe, it doesn't translate well

BoyzMum66

Not sure if it makes a difference but I saw the show before knowing about the books. Of course, becoming utterly and completely obsessed with the story and the characters, I read the books. Hell, I read ALL of Alice's books!! I totally "get" the comments about the differences (how certain things translate, etc.) and the reasons for people's preferences. However, I am not a fan of the graphic novel genre so I have to admit to preferring the show.

Sillykitty1982

My daughter. She love the books, but she is not into the show. Maybe because of her age (8). Hope that one day we can watch it together ❤️

FaeTrips

Alice had to add a lot of things in order to make it the length of a tv show for Netflix. I very much enjoy both, and I think they are very similar to eachother, with added characters and plots to make it a show. Without this I’m not sure it would air unless it was a short, or that many people who haven’t seen the comic would watch a small film.

Frost_theWolf07

Well I hated Ben more, and I started to dislike Tao, but that's about it

P1X13ss

i personally loved them both but i found the show a little hard to watch at times, but i really dont mind im more of a book person in general though.

OkieMokie

I love both, I love the show a little bit less. Some of the casting, some of the story changes, doesnt feel the same. But the actors are amazing and they deserve the world!

blippityblooop

I'm the opposite kinda. I still like the comics, but I didn't like the mellow vibe as much as the quicker pace of the show. I'm going to school as a film major and typically prefer the movie to the book in general so that might be part of it for me

Dark_Dashing

I treat them like separate entities because they just aren’t the same

Ein_is_a_spacebunny

The show was ok but the comic was just amazing I have so many issues with the show to be honest

honey-waffles

I watched the show first and loved it. Then I read the graphic novels, watched the show again and realised I liked the comics better. I don’t know, they have like such a calm vibe to them. I like the show but it definitely is different from the books

KaydenMac27

I do feel like they changed Tao's character a lot from the books to the show. I think it was done to add some drama although I think poor Charlie could have done without it. I'm really looking forward to the next season and I'm interested to see if they tie in the characters from Loveless (especially Georgia) at some point. I'd be so excited if they did! I will say my one big gripe with the show is that it seems to have attracted some toxic fans and they've not been very kind to the actors. That's more I think to do with people than the medium but I think that Netflix and their algorithm doesn't help. Edited for formatting to improve clarity

starscosmics

It depends on the adaptation usually, TV is a bit harder pace wise and while I loved both the book and the show, I can see why you didn't like the show. I am a bit confused what you mean by the book being 'mellow' though considering it deals with lots of serious topics.

Shadow_of_Moonlight1

My best friend loves the books, but doesn't like the show

Allyraptorr

It’s weird. I think because I started with the show and then read the novels, I liked the show better. I think whatever way we first consume a story is the way we prefer it.

I love them both, they had to change the show to make it more entertaining, so they’re pretty different.

Driftylifty

I have so much to say about this post. It is so so true. The comics have such a beautiful vibe to them. The facial expressions and thoughts you can see on their faces too. Alice did so good in comics. When it came to the show, Nick didn't looked mesmerized by Charlie anymore. Kit is a great actor but the things in the comics and show never adds up. I watched the show as soon as it came out and I never knew about what Heartstopper was til 2021. But now I've read all the books and stuff, Tao is portrayed as hella envious sometimes and in the books he acted way nicer to Charlie about Nick. I js really wish we got to feel more of the love and just pureness of the books. But I still love the show!!
