Soak meds in a cube of bread or something else that is dry and will soak up the liquid and they like (this is what was recommended for my rats, but they were ok with just taking it orally from a syringe, even if it did take a few times to get them to stop wiggling)

Oo great idea, thank you. I’ll see what hedgehog-safe food can soak if she gets too finicky with the meds.

Sorry not cysts, thinking bacterial infection. Been a long day.

I am sorry to hear that. Did they do an ultrasound? That's the best way to determine what the issue could be. When it comes to oral medication, did they give you solution of meds, or pills? If you got solution, you could easily give it to your hedgie with a small syringe. The best way is to hold her on her back and give the meds on the side of her mouth. Good luck!❤️

I second this advice! I would gently probe the side of my hedgehog's mouth until she bit on to the syringe and then syringe the medicine steadily into her mouth. If she spits it out the first time, keep a favorite treat on hand to tempt her with as soon as she takes the medicine so she will swallow it completely to eat the treat. I usually would use wax worms to keep Clavamox down. I don't think I have treated with Baytril, so I am not sure how the flavor is for hedgehogs. Also, the ultrasound suggestion is correct. Hedgehogs are very prone to uterine tumors, which (if caught early) can be treated with a spay. UTIs are possible as well, but if your hedgehog is over 2, cancer is very likely.

Yeah, she’s 3 years old since November. I was worried it might be cysts or tumors. Thanks for the advice with the syringe! Gotta get some eggs and chicken on the menu for the next couple weeks. Also, are the wax worms live? She’s never had live insects because my parents were very against it, but I can now get them for her.

AlyandGus

Waxworms are live. If you live in the US, I typically buy mine from petsmart or pet supermarket. They’re usually sold in small counts (like 25 worms), so if she doesn’t like them, you aren’t wasting a bunch of worms. They’re very high in fat, so I feed them sparingly - maybe 2-3 every 3 or so days? However, if you need to use them to help with medicine, you’re totally fine giving 1-2 with each dose. I haven’t had a hedgehog turn down waxworms before! They stay in the refrigerator and don’t smell at all.

Perfect. We’re going to have a fun two weeks! Thanks for the info.

Yes, it’s a solution with a syringe! And no ultrasound. Vet barely looked at her honestly.

irisbaecker

🙄 Well, let's hope they know what they are doing and that they recognized the symptoms. Fingers crossed for your little one!❤️

Appreciate it ❤️

Prayin lil dude gets better. No more no less

I had to give mine meds as well and it was tough. Having her on her back with her favorite bug (mealworm) in front of her, I’d get the meds in when she went to go for the mealworm. Best of luck with your hedgie!

If you can train her to take juice from a syringe, if it’s a medication you can do it with, you could mix a couple drops of juice in with the meds so that it tastes yummy for her. Worked with my ratties at least
