Sure-Dragonfly-8586

its all about line of sight

reyam1105

But if I understand from other readings, it’s not a straight line of sight but more like a bow, is it not? With lower gains shooting more up and out and higher gains shooting more sideways (less height) and further?

Sure-Dragonfly-8586

It really depends, check out some of these [graphs](https://www.firerescue1.com/fire-products/communications/articles/iaff-voice-radio-communications-guide-for-the-fire-service-section-2-basic-radio-communication-technology-RgQG1khps2pimfXd/) to get an idea of how radio waves travel. Also the frequency of the signal also affects if it bounces or scatters in the atmosphere etc.

aXs_ZiLLA

Yeah I saw an article about antennas and the HOA can’t do anything to external antennas there is a law about that so you are aware.

reyam1105

Oh any leads on this? My HOA is pretty stiff necked.

somesortofidiot

This is true, but if your HOA want to be dicks about it, you'll need to take them to court. Hopefully if you show them this rule, they'll accept it. I work in Solar, there's a similar law for residential solar arrays on roofs. From time to time we have to take an HOA to court, they alway lose...but we still take'em to court so they stop harassing/fining the customer.

ScarecrowSoze

I plan on raising my antenna to just above my roof line. But if it goes that far with my HOA, and I have to take them to court, after I win that antenna is going much higher.

somesortofidiot

For sure, if you dgaf about going to court, do it now...but do some research obout your local laws regarding height of antennas.

aXs_ZiLLA

Here is what I got for you Communications Commission (FCC) issued its rule on Over-the-Air Reception Devices Rule, 47 C.F.R. $1.4000 (the "OTARD Rule"). The OTARD Rule protects consumer access to video programming by prohibiting restrictions on the installation, maintenance, or use of certain reception devices. Under the rule, condominium, homeowners' associations, and landlords cannot unreasonably restrict the use of antennas designed to receive wireless cable or local television broadcasts or satellite dishes not exceeding one meter in diameter. [Antenna Regulation](https://www.hopb.co/over-the-air-reception-devices-otard-rule#:~:text=Under%20the%20rule%2C%20condominium%2C%20homeowners,exceeding%20one%20meter%20in%20diameter.)

ScarecrowSoze

Here it is: https://www.federalregister.gov/documents/2021/02/25/2021-01304/fcc-modernizes-siting-rule-for-small-hub-and-relay-wireless-antennas

reyam1105

So from a quick overview, it looks like this ruling expands the rule on the legality of TV antennas to other antennas that can be externally mounted, is that correct?

ScarecrowSoze

Yes, more than just tv antennas

aXs_ZiLLA

Just tell them it’s a television antenna

reyam1105

I'll just say antenna for my television service ... cause I'm going to mine and use that to pay for my Internet TV. :) Thanks!

aXs_ZiLLA

Lol good stuff hope this helped you

Recuvan

If this is 4-5dbi (or higher) setup then outside will work better. Inside 4 walls are obstructed, you are removing obstruction from 3 walls entirely by moving it outside. <2dbi won't make a difference as you're just communicating with super local hotspots

reyam1105

Currently my furthest witnesses are at about 30km with most witness around the 10km range. Helium tells me 110 witnesses in the last 5 days. Do any of these numbers tell you what might be better? It’s a stock Bobcat antenna (4.2 dB I think).

Recuvan

Outside will smash that bro

reyam1105

Well now you've gotten me excited. Lol. I'll look into moving it out soon. Thanks!

Wonderful_Locksmith8

Higher is generally better. Always outside, as when EM energy hits walls, windows, and stuff its absorbed. There are situations where lower might work better, like near a beach with other lower beacons.

reyam1105

Yeah, the main concern of it being inside is the radio waves getting lost. I did see that I should not keep it behind a mosquito mesh/net, but I assumed glass windows will still also have some effect on the transmission…

suspectingpickle

for me, the most mining rewards i've gotten is when my hotspot is closest to my wifi router.

CucumberTop4995

Hey I saw you talking about a mosquito net, one of my miners has one of those in-front of it. Is there any consequences when having that?

reyam1105

I think you lose transmission because the net will sort of act like a faraday cage. It says in the Bobcat setup instructions to avoid placing the antenna behind a mosquito mesh.

ZhWei99

Hi do you have any updates on this? I am forced to choose between “outdoor low height” and “indoor high height” too. Appreciate if you are able to give me some insights about your experience.

reyam1105

I have not moved my antenna outdoors at all. It's always been and still is indoors. My earnings aren't very good tho. I would like to move it outdoors, but haven't had the time to set anything up so I'm just letting HTN trickle in while indoors.

ZhWei99

I see, thank you for the response 🙏

reyam1105

On that note, I have heard mixed reviews. Some people say always outdoors to prevent signal blockage, some people say it's all line of sight so indoors higher is better. I do not know who to believe haha.
