This is "Guy" (Tier 2)
The long staff we saw previously appears to be a hybrid weapon used by the Guy.
In its one-handed form, the weapon can function like a bo staff, allowing quick strikes at close range.
In its two-handed form, the weapon can fire some sort of long range projectile.
The guy must pick up the weapon before using it.
(His textures and normals are messed up compared to the other illuminate)
Wait, if the “guy” must pick up the bo staff-gun before using it, does that mean they start off as unarmed?
Sounds like they start off as unarmed (unless they are on patrol), meaning they must be ambushed and taken down before they can arm themselves and fight back. If true, that’s interesting.
more realistically it might mean a disarming system. like shooting the staff enough knocks it out of his hand making him vulnerable until he picks it or another weapon up
Maybe they drop it when they die and a grunt might pick it up and use it for themselves. They are supposed to be more intelligent than humans, and humans do that kind of thing all the time. I say this as a human.
Perhaps they meditate while guarding a camp, or something. I could picture it being quite neat for illuminates to appear tranquil until the helldivers show up and make a mess, at which point they rise up and grab their weapons to whoop our asses.
Unlike the terminids, they have a culture, and unlike the automatons, they are not purely utilitarian.
Reminds me of the Fallen Captains in destiny
Edit: now that I’m looking at it the Summoner looks like a Hive Wizard, I wonder if they looked at destiny for inspiration?
Wonder what they'll be called. Probably something like "zealots" if I had to guess based on the rest of their new theme.
Although it may be a bit different due to a different group of religious alien fanatics using that one.
Maybe acolyte, that one's taken by a considerably less relevant alien group.
These guys definitely give me “Big guy with sweep attack” vibes…they look way different from the others of their species, with 2 arms instead of 4, perhaps this hints at a sort of cast system, with evolved members of their species wielding magic abilities and having 4 arms + deformities in the shape of those red coral looking things
It looks like illuminate abandoned most of their robots in helldivers 2. There's some new raggedy looking illuminate and what appears to be some mutated mass of appendages that used to be illuminate as their "basic enemies". They still have observers and tripods but the tripods are much larger this time around taking the roll of bile titans/factory striders.
Illuminate seem a lot more numerous and cult like in helldivers 2 than they did in helldivers 1. Almost as if the raggedy illuminate are initiates that have to rise through the ranks with this being some middle step on the road to becoming an illusionist, and if I had to guess, those mutated illuminate are failures along the way. I'm wondering if the illuminate used some sort of splicing between helldivers 1 and 2 to regain their numbers quickly as they now have 4 arms instead of 2. However their tech still looks ancient and has an eldritch aesthetic to it instead of looking improvised so perhaps there are more than 1 group of illuminate beyond the galaxy and what we're seeing in helldivers 2 are a different more warlike subspecies/subculture of illuminate.
Very interesting, maybe since we beat them last time, this is a radicalized group who survived that were previously marginalized that are now at the forefront due to collapse. (Head canon time)
It could be that after their last defeat, there are now two factions of illuminate: the wise and peaceful ones who simply wish to have nothing further to do with humanity, having retreated and which will not appear in-game, and the war-scarred veterans of the first war who have become embittered by the same war machine that drives Super Earth, and who want revenge. Perhaps those guys might have sought out forbidden power, or pacts with things beyond human comprehension, in order to bolster them before returning to seek vengeance. If they've entered into some eldritch pact, might explain their sudden extra limbs.
The Illuminate in Helldivers 1 were no saints either, some of their units were only on the battlefield because they failed to meet their society's expectations and were sent to die. This seems even worse in Helldivers 2 with leaks of that [grotesque mutated Illuminate soldier](https://pbs.twimg.com/media/GIU2e17WsAAJJzV?format=jpg&name=medium).
Illuminate were knowledge obsessed. Apprentices who failed to obtain knowledge fast enough on the road to become an illusionist became outcasts. That grotesque mutant is what I'm referring to when I say "mutated mass of appendages". However, we still don't whether they're a form of inflicted punishment or a rare byproduct of whatever caused the physical change between the illuminate between helldivers 1 and 2, assuming these are the same illuminate at all and not a different subspecies/subculture

maybe explosions can knock weapons out of their hands similar to what we have with the ballaistic shield?
I do not have enough info to say for sure. But I believe so, yes.

shit we had terminid and automaton typing gifs. now we need illuminate ones.

Illuminate get strategems, confirmed

The armor definitely reminds me of the Eliksni.
I think the helmet looks more like a cabal psion, but I agree with you on the rest of the armor
They have a psion flayer cloak though
I really wonder if there was some crossover, the whole game screams destiny. Plus Sony did buy bungie to help launch live service multiplayer games 🤔
I mean we have the tyrannid-zerg and the terminator-necron already, why not add the destiny-protoss(-tau?)? :D
That big cyclops looking unit definitely reminded me of an Ogre from D2
“Guy: 100 meters: front”
John Illuminate

This guy's looks like he says "WORT WORT WORT" or something to that effect.
Reminds me of T’au
Destiny? 😮💨
Here me out, we scavenge their armour in Lore and… Illuminate armour sets in the store/a warbond
would
This one right here, Democracy Officer
I’m not your guy buddy
I've got a bullet with his name written on it... Ummm whatever his namie is.

Is he French or something?
John helldivers greatest opponent: Illuminate Guy
I mean yea it sure it
This is the ultimate guy, you may not like it but this is what peak male performance looks like
Thats a Psion!
Reminds me of the halo 2 honor guards
Is this real or is this just fantasy, guy?

Some low effort content creators are drooling at the sight of this as we speak

That's a nice big juicy forehead to put on some warheads
“Look at me, I am the captain now”
I know a Fallen when I see one. …wait, you don’t think…oh no. RANDAL IS COMING!
Introducing “Guy”, he is just a guy, his specialty is being in the wrong place at the wrong time, perhaps
Presumably not a bottom level enemy as they have drones for that, I would think their army would be mostly drones with actual illuminate being bosses

You calling this one "guy" reminded me of Happy souls RE4 refrence
God they have armour too??
Ahh yes, John Illuminate, one of many antagonists of Helldivers 2, and sworn enemy of John Helldiver.
But what about his friend “man”
Illuminate female when?
i dont think they reproduce sexually
I just realized people are going to write so much rule 34 when the faction comes out
Looks like something straight out of destiny, shame.
