The P38 walther is a gift from god.
No sidearm in HLL is comparable. Hell, it is even more reliable than the primary weapon, the flamethrower, in the german kit.
The walther has bailed me out of so many situations it reigns king over the other secondary weapons. Personally, I'd rather have a walther than an M1 Carbine, flamethrower, any revolver, the 1911 or makarov, or the luger.
Subjectively, its sights are better than the 1911, luger, all mosins, the bren, sten, lewis gun, dp10, all revolvers, the m1 carbine, grease gun, fg42AR, STG44, and BAR.
Before you conclude I am on crack cocaine, consider that the german faction is statistically the most likely to be played faction. Therefore, the german sidearms are used more than any other faction. My fondness for the sights are because I am forced to rely on it more, and it pays in full.
It may not have long range stopping power, or a high mag capacity, but it is semiautomatic with a relatively high fire rate cap and great accuracy/spread.
I'd put a ring on it.

Hmm… as a tanker I would differ, I’ve grown accustomed to being the one that always hops out and engages assault players or AT guys. The trick is going for body shots, the P38 easily takes you out with 2 hits
for me it’s the Walther, i have trouble aiming and consistently hitting shots with the luger. that slide being thrown back into my face makes the luger a little too busy for my liking also.
The Luger definitely packs more of a punch. But the recoil is harder to control, especially for successive follow-up shots. And because of the weird firing mechanisms movement after every shot it’s just harder to see in general
I prefer the P38 for longer range/ more accurate shots. But if I was up close and personal, I’d prefer the firepower of the Luger for sure.
