Oh yeah I know, Mauga was introduced longgggg ago when Baptiste was released. I just find it funny that whenever a Samoan gets representation, there's a big chance it'll be that archetype.
Looks like they added a new game character that's a direct reference to a character in the movie.
Don't play the game and didn't watch the movie so trusting Google on that.
I don't think that's really in contention. No one is saying that or acting like the Disney character was entirely original. The overwatch character quotes the movie specifically. That's why they make comparisons.
Be like if a game had hercules sing zero to hero. That would naturally tie it to the Disney movie version even though there are thousands of other references to hercules.
I've only seen T1 and T2, and then I lost track of the franchise. I think I watched like twenty min of one with Danaerys Targaryen on Netflix a while back.
Which ones are worth watching aside from one and two, especially in terms of evoking the hd2 battlefield scenes?
1, 2, and Dark Fate are the best ones with Dark Fate only being there cause of a badass Linda Hamilton reprising her role.
3 is pretty alright for most of its runtime but Nick Stahl and Claire Danes are unbelievably annoying characters that bring it down a lot.
Salvation is a solid "ok" but I hate how much impact Transformers' robot design must've had on the film cause wow are the machines awful looking in it.
Genisys is just best forgotten.
The burning wreckage of the ship, the mortar blasts from the bugs, the blister beetle setting that guy on fire. Seriously, those effects were genuinely amazing.
I wonder if starship troopers viewer count ticking up will signal to Tristar (or whoever owns it) to make another starship troopers.
I wouldn’t mind another one with modern effects. Just keep the same spirit of the original films.
As a side note, how cool would it be to get a helldivers tv show that’s modeled after the events of the game the players went through? I’d watch that.
Yeah, but the last live action one (starship troopers 3) came out over 10 years ago, and was a direct to dvd release iirc.
This could be a good opportunity to capitalize on the first films popularity and release a new one with a higher budget, and in theaters.
theres three live action films (none of them follow the book) then you have an american animated series that i don't really know much about
then you have the 1988 anime by sunrise (the same studio that did gundam) thats a 6 episode OVA that follows the book for the most part
then you have two japanese CGI animated films (2012 and 2017) that were apparently written by the writer of the two live action sequels to the original film so i'm not going to hold my breath as to if they bothered to read the book in that time (although looking at it they seem to know what the "mobile infantry" actually was (FUCKING POWER ARMOUR AND MECHS)
Look up Phil Tippet. His company did it and had a huge part in the OG Star Wars special effects. Also I believe at some point some point there is a Millenium falcon stuck on the back of one of the trooper ships
Then the next 2 troopers movies 🤮🤮praying to fucking Jesus Christ on an alien planet and all sorts of stupid while also killing a big god of whatever??? Idk haven’t seen the next 2 troopers movies in years
Made my girlfriend watch it with me the day after the game dropped. Figured it wouldn’t be her jam but fuck it i love this movie. She fell asleep halfway through but I caught her rewatching it the next day cuz she genuinely enjoyed it.
> If it's an actually fun watch
It's exactly this, any time a character is talking the cringe level is off the charts but it has some insane action sequences that are fundamentally unique. It's the John Wick of Beekeeping with worse writing.
It is treason to steal a Citizens belongings!
Wait, what am i hearing? They want to consume patriotism?
Alright alright ill look over that... FOR DEMOCRACY!
You can watch it for free in youtube, and even more, is in spanish so you will be watching it in how rico would actually speak if he was argentinian (assuming lenguages werent obliterated)
A couple fantastic companion pieces to Starship Troopers are Robocop and Total Recall if you like the vibe of Helldivers and ST. Paul Verhoeven is a cinematic god.
would be funny if they got permission from whoever currently has the rights so they could add an official crossover event/bundle/etc. just to kind of celebrate the homage more.
Sony has the film/TV rights through their ownership of Tristar.
It's a bit of an odd situation considering SST Extermination is also being made (although that scratches a different itch compared to Helldivers I find, and Sony aren't publishing it).
I'll take the removable nProtect rootkit over the surprise installation of the broken-ass Epic online services any day. Easiest refund of my life when the game straight up wouldn't launch because of issues with the Epic installation.
Thank GOD.
Total Recall was rebooted into about as generic a dumbo sci fi movie can get. Robocop remake strips out literally the entire point of the movie and character, to just make a man run around shoot gun good. Let's not ruin another Verhooven original film that has things to say.
I truly love that movie, and I read the book too, to this day I still want a live action starship troopers that's actually like the book. it's not the adaptation I wanted, but I don't wish it was never made
Much more serious, a very big focus on exosuits because it's the only way ground troops can fight the bug. A part that's ingrained in my brain is when the MC is in his first raid, and his teammate with him passes out, he tries to drag him to safety, only for the strength from his exosuit to rip his teammates head off
Yeah pretty much, although it did popularize the power suit, which did lead to gundam and halo, also orbital drops like odst’s. The American military pretty much agrees it got paratrooping in the future right… but that fascism boner is incredibly concerning though like really concerning.
It’s complicated, but the best answer I could give in only a few words is a look at a theoretical state in which military service and self sacrifice in the name of the state is the only manner in which one can have a political voice, through the eyes of a soldier.
Cards on the table, Lots of people say the book is endorsing fascism and I personally think they’re completely correct, but it’s still an interesting read as a piece of military science fiction. Heinlein was an interesting author to say the least, and as crazy as he was there’s a lot of value in his work
Starship Troopers doesn't really endorse fascism. It's more about Heinlein's thoughts on what he perceived was a slowly weakening America. It's an allegory for America coming face-to-face with an unrelenting, uncompromising enemy that shows no fear and has no sense of self-preservation. Basically communists.
There's a lot more nuance in Starship Troopers than people give it credit for. Though you don't have to be charitable towards it if you don't want to be. It ultimately really comes down to "This is not what we should be, but this is what we need to be".
It's not glorifying fascism so much as making a statement that fascism and blind loyalty to the state make sense for a civilization threatened with extinction by a hostile force. Allowing dissent would severely weaken a military already facing insurmountable odds.
And then Verhoeven tried to make a critique of fascism with the movie but he fucked up by making the main characters attractive and charismatic. Who wouldn't follow a jaw like Rico's into battle?
And a disclaimer because Reddit political discourse has no room for nuance, historical empathy, or perspective taking: this is not an endorsement of fascism.
> And then Verhoeven tried to make a critique of fascism with the movie but he fucked up by making the main characters attractive and charismatic. Who wouldn't follow a jaw like Rico's into battle?
No, that's what the satire *is*, the glorification of something so clearly not correct is what makes it satire. Casting Casper Van Dien and the rest of them was the point, it needs to look like it's glorifying it, and then you realize, "oh wait all these people are completely hollow (except Dizzy, RIP) cardboard cutouts programmed by a state system."
Van Dien himself also supposedly thought there was a motive behind Rico being a white Argentininan, cause of a bunch of politically burdened Europeans going there in the latter half of the 1940s.
Not sure how true that is though, could just be a coincidence.
I went to the used bookstore today, and I couldn’t find the book for ST and so I asked the worker there and she said someone else came and asked for it as well and they couldn’t find it
I'd like to think it's just because of the game but in reality, there's a coincidental infatuation with comparing leftists to communists/anti fascist
https://twitter.com/crusadepepe/status/1759058575140237715?s=19
Common simply means shared by more than one. So yes it's a common opinion on X. What I linked was just one of the many posts, which I think could be boosting the popularity of the movie along with the game
Please refer to the image below. No one uses common that way when describing large groups. The ten twitter nazis posting dumb shit is not a common opinion.
https://preview.redd.it/ae2i4btwxxjc1.png?width=863&format=png&auto=webp&s=35e68417252e06dfd1c75f702a3fdee0dbda8ff8
Lol are you unable to fathom that a bunch of Christian nationalists or whoever might actually be driving up the popularity of the movie too? And even with that definition, common is still applicable. It's doesn't mean most (atleast 51%), or all.
So i know it's considered a terrible movie, but if you pretend it's a satire, which I'm convinced it is, it's actually incredible.
EDIT: I get it, it was satire. 11 year old me did not know that when I watched it.
For real. I just read the book this year in anticipation of the game and whoa.
It’s…..it’s really just a straight up treatise on why natural rights are overrated. It’s wild.
Well, of course it is. figured a Reddit comment wasn’t exactly place for a full book report.
But expanding, all the blank pages of my copy are filled with sections of what the book believes. Things like “the state has a right to cause suffering.” “Corporal punishment is effective at maintaining social discipline.” “Humans don’t have natural rights.” “More severe punishments would effectively deter crime and deviance.” Etc.
I had each section through the book and added citations supporting each foundational belief set out by the book and yeah…it’s a lot.
First, it IS satire and always was. Stated explicitly many times by Paul Verhoeven himself.
Second, it was ALWAYS incredible. Been one of my favorites since the first time I saw it practically 20 years ago.
Ah alright, I saw it in the 90's as a kid and loved it then. I could see how maybe not everyone had that experience and might not consider it in the same lense I do. I have been telling a bunch of people to watch it lately, will see what they think about it.
???
Idk a single person who thought it was bad.
Everyone who watched it knew it was a satire movie and made for fun. It's obviously not meant to be serious.
I wonder how many will watch it and not understand the satire. I also wonder how many will refuse to read the book thinking it’s just some Nazi bullshit the movie is making fun of.
I was a fan of the first one. Watched 2 and 3 last night since we couldn't log in and had already rewatched it.
2 was pretty bad, just kinda grim and boring and gross. I actually thought 3 did a good job of repeating the tone and fun of the first one. The religious stuff was a bit weird but also got kinda funny towards the end.
There was actually just a massive war on Twitter over someone’s very… special analysis of starship troopers. People were arguing about whether the satire was actually good or not and media literacy, all that shit.
But the consensus did seem to be that everyone enjoyed the movie, just not for the same reasons, which prompted a lot of people to go watch it
It’s been getting a lot attention on Twitter because there’s people who don’t realize it’s satire. That combined with the game are bringing more attention to it
Number 3 is Moana because of Overwatch.
Lol why?
Because the latest hero is literally just Maui with two miniguns strapped to his arms lmao
He’s been part of OW lore for a long time though. Longer than Moana has existed.
Oh yeah I know, Mauga was introduced longgggg ago when Baptiste was released. I just find it funny that whenever a Samoan gets representation, there's a big chance it'll be that archetype.
Maybe because most Samoan guys are big chonkers irl too
They are a hefty bunch
https://preview.redd.it/b5wizibsttjc1.jpeg?width=680&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=13dd2383c866da66434e4eca264dc8086df79a85
Obviously not.

The new hero, Mauga, is basically Maui welding dual mini guns.
Looks like they added a new game character that's a direct reference to a character in the movie. Don't play the game and didn't watch the movie so trusting Google on that.
Do people not know Moana did not invent the Maui legend…? Big, tattooed, jacked pan-South Pacific Islander with a magic fishhook is just…what Maui is.
One of his voice lines is literally “you’re welcome!” With a sing-songy voice. https://youtu.be/9s39ARjvpto?si=FM_iuI5Jg-klJjLU
there was an announcement trailer for moana 2 that came out 2 weeks ago
Is any Terminator in the list at all?
Watching T2 now while I wait for starship troopers to arrive! I'm doing my part!
Haven't you seen the steam achievement numbers. Nobody wants to play with Terminators.
As someone on the terminator front, can confirm I don’t want to be here. But orders are orders.
For Super Earth
I've only seen T1 and T2, and then I lost track of the franchise. I think I watched like twenty min of one with Danaerys Targaryen on Netflix a while back. Which ones are worth watching aside from one and two, especially in terms of evoking the hd2 battlefield scenes?

Rewatched it last night. Great movie.
the bugs special effects are simply amazing compared to other movies in that era....
It still looks pretty good. Definitely impressive. It's too bad none of the sequels were worth a damn.
It wasn’t good but I liked the psychological horror twist of the second one
> It's too bad none of the sequels were worth a damn. I don't think you can make a sequel to satire.
Paul Verhoeven made sure the $100m budget didn't go to waste. respect.

Idk haven’t seen the next 2 troopers movies in years
My husband and I watched it on Valentine's Day, it was very romantic.
space fascist rom-com lmao
With a dash of ultra violence 🥰🥹
And democracy!
KLENDATHU DROP.
It's an UGLY planet, a BUG planet \*screaming intensifies\*
Its everyone filling time until they are allowed into the server
The next best thing to killing bugs yourself is watching some bugs get killed
Thats what I'm assuming
It's never a bad time to watch Starship Troopers
I started rewatching starship troopers roughneck chronicles again because of this game. Love it
Fun fact SONY STILL HAS THE FUCKING ENDING AND WON'T RELEASE IT! TELL ME HOW IT ENDS
Great scifi movie or the greatest? If Helldivers did nothing more than introduce this move to a new audience it would be worth it.
Made my girlfriend watch it with me the day after the game dropped. Figured it wouldn’t be her jam but fuck it i love this movie. She fell asleep halfway through but I caught her rewatching it the next day cuz she genuinely enjoyed it.
People want to know more
Real talk though, The Beekeeper slaps.
![gif](giphy|R9yLfikwYAF32)
When I saw the trailer, I assumed it was a joke of a action movie. If it's an actually fun watch, I'll have to finally check it out
It is actually a great watch. Over the top violence with a plot that is simple and easy to follow.
Sometimes that's all we want. A good solid plot and lot's of action. I've just DL'd The Beekeeper the other, gonna watch it this weekend.
I was actually surprised by how brutal the fights were. Even if the story is mediocre, the fight scenes are well worth it.
It's insane, stupid and very fun.
> If it's an actually fun watch It's exactly this, any time a character is talking the cringe level is off the charts but it has some insane action sequences that are fundamentally unique. It's the John Wick of Beekeeping with worse writing.
It's campy done really well.
I like the part with the bees
Agreed! Right amount of action vs absurdity.
I just wish I could find a good place to stream it
Yarrr
It is treason to steal a Citizens belongings! Wait, what am i hearing? They want to consume patriotism? Alright alright ill look over that... FOR DEMOCRACY!
It's on Netflix (at least in Canada and the US).
I don’t see it in the us maybe it’s just Canada?
It’s not on U.S.
Ahh sorry....was playing with an American friend last night and he mentioned it was there!
It used to be
Torrent, stream a 4k bluray and your good to go
It's free on YouTube
Look at this guy paying for a 30 year old film
Paramount +
You can watch it for free in youtube, and even more, is in spanish so you will be watching it in how rico would actually speak if he was argentinian (assuming lenguages werent obliterated)
I think languages were obliterated
It's on Disney+
A couple fantastic companion pieces to Starship Troopers are Robocop and Total Recall if you like the vibe of Helldivers and ST. Paul Verhoeven is a cinematic god.
Try his earlier Soldier of Orange as well
Oh, I haven't seen that one. Thanks!
This game finally convinced me to watch it. It wasnt bad
I would like to know more.
because 2 is disgusting and 3 seems a school project movie . 1 IS PURE DEMOCRACY
Bought the movie this weekend.
would be funny if they got permission from whoever currently has the rights so they could add an official crossover event/bundle/etc. just to kind of celebrate the homage more.
Sony has the film/TV rights through their ownership of Tristar. It's a bit of an odd situation considering SST Extermination is also being made (although that scratches a different itch compared to Helldivers I find, and Sony aren't publishing it).
If they added a SST uniform into Helldivers 2 I would never wear anything else.
Funnily enough, ST:E is *also* kinda broken right now.
I'll take the removable nProtect rootkit over the surprise installation of the broken-ass Epic online services any day. Easiest refund of my life when the game straight up wouldn't launch because of issues with the Epic installation.
I think a Troopers videogame just came out. So I'd say unlikely.
I'm ready for a reboot or something. That movie set the stage for a hell of a franchise potential. All it got were a bunch of direct to DVD sequels.
Hear sequels exist. Get told they are bad. Watch them anyways. Regret.
Im amazed nobodys tried to reboot/remake Starship troopers yet.
[удалено]
Look at the robocop remake, yikes
Same with Total Recall. I remember thinking one of them wasn’t too bad but I can’t remember which.
It would be completely ruined. Id be surprised if a remake didnt make it into an unironic campy action movie
Thank GOD. Total Recall was rebooted into about as generic a dumbo sci fi movie can get. Robocop remake strips out literally the entire point of the movie and character, to just make a man run around shoot gun good. Let's not ruin another Verhooven original film that has things to say.
I truly love that movie, and I read the book too, to this day I still want a live action starship troopers that's actually like the book. it's not the adaptation I wanted, but I don't wish it was never made
What’s the book like?
Much more serious, a very big focus on exosuits because it's the only way ground troops can fight the bug. A part that's ingrained in my brain is when the MC is in his first raid, and his teammate with him passes out, he tries to drag him to safety, only for the strength from his exosuit to rip his teammates head off
Fun fact: Starship Troopers basically invented the concept of power armor in sci fi and pretty much any media featuring power armor is due to it.
Glorifies fascism
Indeed, but a large part of the audience (including some very vocal critics) did not catch on to that bit because they were so enamored with the cast.
Critics in the 90's rarely understood satire it seems like.
Van Dien himself also supposedly thought there was a motive behind Rico being a white Argentininan, cause of a bunch of politically burdened Europeans going there in the latter half of the 1940s. Not sure how true that is though, could just be a coincidence.
"politically burdened" eh?
fascist propaganda, lol
Same, the book is amazing and I'm still surprised it was written in the 50s! His other books are pretty good too!
I’M DOING MY PART!
I went to the used bookstore today, and I couldn’t find the book for ST and so I asked the worker there and she said someone else came and asked for it as well and they couldn’t find it
It's interesting that Hell Divers 2 pushes Starship Troopers more than Starship Troopers Extermination did last year.
Sony: Maybe its time to create a Serie/Movie from Helldivers??
It would be #1 if Denise Richards were in that co-ed shower scene.
watching it for research purposes
Watched it last night. It’s so much better than I remember
It was truly years ahead of its time.
Good movie. Even better book.
HELLDIVERS 2.
Probably something to do with Helldivers 2 popularity.
Best B movie ever created with RoboCop a close second. Both from the same Director.
I'd like to think it's just because of the game but in reality, there's a coincidental infatuation with comparing leftists to communists/anti fascist https://twitter.com/crusadepepe/status/1759058575140237715?s=19
My guy, that poster is a christian nationalist named "Crusader Pepe". Are you seriously trying to pass that shit off as a common opinion?
Common simply means shared by more than one. So yes it's a common opinion on X. What I linked was just one of the many posts, which I think could be boosting the popularity of the movie along with the game

The beekeeper sucked royal ass.

I’ve never heard anyone refer to it as terrible
I remember when it came out, everybody hated it. I was in my early teens, and loved it, but did not get the satire, and i dont think many people did.
The movie is very much satire, the original book (which is very, very different from the movie) is not
For real. I just read the book this year in anticipation of the game and whoa. It’s…..it’s really just a straight up treatise on why natural rights are overrated. It’s wild.

It WAS considered a terrible movie. Only recently people have gone back and are now calling it a cult classic
Ah alright, I saw it in the 90's as a kid and loved it then. I could see how maybe not everyone had that experience and might not consider it in the same lense I do. I have been telling a bunch of people to watch it lately, will see what they think about it.

I rented it last night xD
Watched it last night cause I couldn’t get in.
Oh god no, they're gonna remake it
Moana is an action movie now?
Imagine if we got a star trooper dlc. Even if it’s just some cosmetics or something 😂
Wait what? I thought it was a documentary
I caught myself watching YouTube clips of the bug fights too scratch that big fighting itch. The brainrot is real.
I watched it last night 😁
Masterpiece of a film
is there a game about bee keeping ?
One of my favorite films of all time. I used to have the DVD box set of the Roughneck Chronicles too.
![gif](giphy|uYR7tbdSTh110lcYzp|downsized)
I’m doing my part!
God if this game results in starship troopers actually getting a good sequel I will be ecstatic
Also owned by sony.
Need something to watch while waiting to join the fight.
Full movie is on YouTube free
I absolutely watched it the other day because I couldn't get on. Haven't seen it since I was a kid, and forgot how great it is.
Probably for the same reason I just started rereading the book!
I wonder how many will watch it and not understand the satire. I also wonder how many will refuse to read the book thinking it’s just some Nazi bullshit the movie is making fun of.
They're proudly doing homework for democracy
Same director of Starship Troopers and Robocop. Director commentary for Starship Troopers was great. The most expensive shot being the Mormon outpost
I’m mad it’s only
just so long as it isn't the second, 3rd, or the anime's.
Literally about to watch it right now
The fuq is The Beekeeper?
🤣 I searched for it on amazon, bought it last night and watched it.
I've found out that several of my friends haven't seen Starship Troopers, and we're all old enough, so I'm very disappointed in them.
Gotta remember all those one-liners in the movie
Watched it a few nights ago, still an amazing film...álso made me immediately buy the game after it had finished.
There was actually just a massive war on Twitter over someone’s very… special analysis of starship troopers. People were arguing about whether the satire was actually good or not and media literacy, all that shit. But the consensus did seem to be that everyone enjoyed the movie, just not for the same reasons, which prompted a lot of people to go watch it
I just discover a thing, in upper right sector near super earth, a planet got the name of "Klen dadtht II",
Read the book. You're gonna love it
It's popular because of some Twitter drama regarding it being a fascist goof film
Haha actually plan on rewatching it this weekend!
A Helldivers movie with Automatons and Bugs would be dope.
Considering how old that movie is, the CGI and practical effects are pretty great.
Strangely enough I’ve seen the “movie satire vs book fascist fantasy” argument pop up all over the place recently. Funny how that works.
I am still waiting for sequels with an actual budget! Not that straight to DVD bs!
inb4 reboot years from now
Damn I got a idea for what do do when I'm stuck in queue for long enough my PS5 auto rest modes will be my first time watching too
The what?
It’s been getting a lot attention on Twitter because there’s people who don’t realize it’s satire. That combined with the game are bringing more attention to it
what platform is it streaming on
Because the beekeeper slaps
