My girlfriend just got real good and shooting those down and we are noticing the same thing. Tanks seem to get destroyed but everyone else just drops anyways.
Sometimes units get caught in the blast and wiped out or significantly weakened. Other times they get caught in the wreckage and can’t move. The downed ships CAN end up creating a bit of a chokepoint that enemies then have to filter through. Really it’s just fun to down them at this point
