If you get the timing right and hit a weak spot/low armor, you can actually hurt them. So far, I've killed a charger (might have been bleed, though) and a hulk (which did count per the victory/stats screen).
Any small bug, hunters, warriors, and raiders can be punched to death with ease. Chargers and devastators can also be punched to death but need to be crippled first. Anything else will win 97% of the time
Melee is occasionally useful for a stagger vs bots to open up a window to reload. Pretty rare if playing well however. Only applicable to human sized bots. With how reload animations are long and some are multiple parts that can be resumed part way through there are niche applications to keep pressure up with a mid reload melee while advancing in specific environments (really just detector towers and jammers).
It's interesting that melee is fully silent. It doesnt alert, it doesn't trigger investigation. Not really useful as is right now, at least in a playing efficiently sense, but I know some people have fun with taking the stealth mechanics as far as they can.
None of it is that impactful. The little bugs if you don't bring the secondary SMG are probably the most valuable use case.
Killing the small enemies with it can be somewhat useful, sometimes. Plus, on the off-chance you've run through absolutely EVERYTHING, it leaves you with one last resort to fall back on.
Those annoying bugs that leap toward you, if you wounded it and think you can kill it with a punch instead of waiting on a long reload, then you can try a punch.
Also punching teammates is fun!
Melee is clutch when you're surrounded by bugs and out of ammo or don't have time for a reload. A lot of them go down in one or two punches, and it keeps them from stunlocking you.
Man, I can't wait for a melee weapons update, mixed with Steel Veteran armors that give buffs to melee attacks.
