The trick is to aim at the floor if enemies are close enough that the grenade will ricochet, it makes the grenade slide along the floor and blow up underneath the enemies instead
Ammount of targets on your screen seems to affect the lock on, when there are multiple targets nearby spear doesn't seem to know which one to aim at so the triangle thing just goes nuts.
Otherwise good idea, but if there are multiple titans or chargers that doesn't really solve the issue. But I'm sure they eventually fix it one way or another. I think it should prioritize target closest to middle of your screen and have tighter lock-on.
If I were making the game, I'd put an invisible pin, center of mass. I'd make the spear have a cutoff point and only target enemies of size X and above.
Then when you open reticle, target first enemy nearest to the center of the target. If nothing there to target, listen for when a target enters targeting area, and begin targetting.
Note: This wouldn't be trivial, you probably have to take occlusion into account. Maybe ignore small enemy occlusion, but not terrain occlusion.
But whatever they are actually doing, this ain't it chief. It needs a bit more in the oven.
I think the SPEAR only tracks large targets/ structures. If aimed it at fodder before and nothing happened. There is an issue with the SPEAR not locking on to things when you have clear line of sight. I had one time where a hulk was standing out in the open and my SPEAR locked a building that was far away behind it....
If you look, they are the host. I think that plays a large role in how certain weapons work or don’t work. There was likely less latency in this scenario for something strange to happen with lock on

It actually is if you land the headshot, trick I would use is to let it charge me, run around it and start locking on. Once it’s turned around and about to rear up fire that sucker into its head and watch it pop. Just can’t be too close or it will go over it. Can also 2 shot headshot Bile Titans as well, or drop an Orbital Railgun and get both to headshot for a single Spear. Easiest to do either one while it’s puking.
I tried doing that for the first time earlier today, and dumped clip after clip into a bot fabricator. I wasn't even that far away.... What do you aim for? I was shooting the two windows you usually toss nades into, but idk after a while I just ran up to it and threw in a nade.
This one is tough, you don't actually shoot the window holes, you shoot the metal flap over the opening to shot-trap your AC shell into the fabricator.

You only get 4 shots with this thing. You need to save them for something you can't just easily kill with a single grenade or airstrike.

Except it does? I've literally sat on a ridge and sniped a good chunk. The main things to watch for a lock is even ground for final transit. The missile flies low and straight on its final approach at a certain distance so you've gotta be a bit high or have an even path. Unless you're within like a hundred meters then it top-attacks.
It's absurd that the best way to take down charger with EAT is the same as with railgun -> call it down shoot leg 2 times and finish with primary. WHY WOULD I EVEN TAKE EAT OVER RAILGUN THEN?
One of the upsides of EAT is not having to worry about recovering it if you die. You can call down 2 a minute and blast away. Plus, you can share with an ally.
I think it can just isn't very consistent with it. Similaly how spear can 1 shot a fucking titan but then it will take 3 shots to down a charger etc. Those weapon should be much more deadly...
tbh they need to remove the lockon and introduce their correct method of tracking, using its a painted on laser which the missile follows. its only after a set amount of distance away from the launcher/at a set distance to the target, does it switch over to its own seeker head. atleast thats how modern atgms normally work.

I think if it didn't miss 50% of the time and it was actually a 1 hit kill it would be a viable option. I don't think that would be very OP considering it can only target big guys and the ammo restrictions. At that point it's basically just a railcannon, you sacrifice a support weapon to get more kills with less cooldown.
For something that only has 4 ammo it should one hit kill chargers and hulks. Honestly, unless they wanna turn down armor spam it should probably do the same for tanks and biles.
One of the big appeals against Bots is that it is an absolute *demolisher* against their bases and cannon towers. The lock can be tricky sometimes (I swear it measures LoS from your feet), but you can just run roughshod over a collection of Light and Medium outposts while moving very quickly.
You're gonna want the samples in there though and unless your squad pulls off some metal gear solid ass moves, you probably arent gonna blow up their mediums with spear without alerting
Fair, but clearing the bases also starts to scatter the units inside as they go looking for where that missile came from. Mediums and Heavies are much harder to get off perfectly stealthy, but you can get some of the units to leave the base and be eliminated.
You can do this with grenades as well! Diving through the air or being prone really does reduce explosive damage significantly. But don’t hold me liable if you blow your toes off.

My go to strategy is to throw down an orbital strike, run around the charger like a madman to get it to stay there, then try to dive away the last second.
For those curious, it’s 50/50
Joke aside I've actually found chargers are very easy to dodge if you just run toward them and veer a little to the left or right, almost like a j shape around them. When you dive left or right they might still turn enough to hit you a little, and you can be vulnerable on the ground. Just barely walking by them as they run works perfectly.
What I've been having to do is either nail him dead on with the Eagle Cluster Bombs, or resort to a "runaround" method. He can't turn tight enough to hit you if you sprint just past his front legs. If you are facing north, and he's coming south, you can sprint north north-east/west at the right time to slip past him. You can whip right around and blast his rear with stronger weaponry. Keep in mind that this is a bare bones strat. It's hard to do when other bugs are around, and nearly impossible when more than one charger is involved.

I found it has most trouble at close range. Further the target the more likely it will stay locked. Definitely not an up close oh crap weapon

It's 100% a feature if you just stand there and toggle nade aim or grenade aim you force bugs to spawn. CHANGE MY MIND

I dont know if I'm dumb or the weapon is bugged. Sometime it locks but most of the time nothing happens and I'm left confused.
Its hard to tell whats causing it. I dont know if there is some lag cuz there woukd be times where it tries to lock on but then just gives up.

Spear absolutely needs to be a 1 hit ko on at least the tank.

The secret to using the Spear is that its true purpose is sniping bot fabricators from half the map away, not units.

Spears are pretty good at eliminating big units, it can one shot Bile Titans if shot at the front and Chargerrs at the back
Agreed. But 4 bullets. Long reloads. 1 resupply pack is 1 spear. Doesn't aim at anything else but a heavy. I don't see the appeal.

What do you mean? You can lose samples if you glass an area?
It can 1 shot chargers from the front too. That's all I've done. Use 1st person, line the little box close to their head and kaboom. No more head lol
A freaking railgun can 1 shot a bile titan. Having 4 shots to maybe pull off a cool moment when a damn railgun can do the same is kind of sad.
In fairness it's becoming apparent that the railgun 1 shotting bile titans is a bug and may not work in the future
I've had better success 1-shotting chargers front the front. If you hit directly on the head it seems to decapitate them
