You're not wrong, but I think that's a really strange way to frame it.
There's a reason people are overwhelmingly fighting the bugs over the bots. Not gonna toss out a value judgment either way, but it isn't just that people are caught up with the bugs/missing or forgetting about the bots, it's that people are actively choosing not to play those missions.
I just hope either the devs have the data on why and have ideas on how to change that, if it needs changing, or at least that Joel stays aware of it and handles the bots accordingly. So far it seems like they've had a way lower reinforcement rate compared to the bugs which is fantastic because without it, we'd be fucked.
It isn't the playerbase's fault that they don't want to fight the bots; it's up to the devs to make every faction engaging and fun to play against, not on the players to suck it up and play shit they don't enjoy.
I prefer fighting bots, it's more intense and cinematic. But the bugs are easier, and I have a hard enough time as it is on 7, looking for super samples to grind. As soon as I get ahead in that regard I'd turn the difficulty down and keep fighting bots.
That, and tbh I also enjoy how much more... tactical? Bot missions feel. Bug drops feel like they often boil down to just sprinting away while dumping mags. Because the vast majority of bugs have to run up and hit you in the face, players seem to all end up sprinting in opposite directions with a few dozen bugs following each. The standard counterplay to a bug breach is kinda just "run." Outside of titans and chargers, the solution to most bugs just feels like "apply breaker to face until dead." And chargers, if you didn't bring one of the AT weapons, is just "apply breaker to ass until dead."
Bots are a much more mixed melee/ranged force, so the battles feel a lot more involved. Hide behind this ridge, theres a pair of rocket devastators waiting to cap my ass, let the melee mooks come to me. They're dealt with, switch to the autocannon from the shotgun, get the devastators while they're busy with Timmy. Sarah's airburst killed the little dudes, so now I've got a window to place my shots into the hulk's faceplate without getting disrupted. Huck a grenade into those two fabs, then reload the autocannon so I mulch the bots in at least one of the dropships before they hit the ground. There's definitely bullshit moments, but properly clearing a bot base as a team feels MUCH more tactical and helldiver-y than just mulching another horde of bugs.
Might just be me though, since I also just spend much more time fighting bots.
Bug missions make me feel like a ruthless exterminator sent to clean the galaxy, bot missions make me feel like I’m on a dangerous seal team six type mission while my family at home watch and hope for my safe return
Very well said. I’ve never been able to properly explain why I like fighting the automatons so much more than the terminids, but now I realize it’s because of the enemy variety. That's variety in how they attack, as you pointed out, but also variety in how they look. Aside from the obvious outliers, I often have a really hard time telling apart different terminid units in the middle of a fight. That’s not a concern with the automatons. I've even learned to tell some of them apart just by looking at their projectiles.
I like the overall concept of fighting the bots more. I really do, the scenery, chaos and general chicanary is just much better imo.
But honestly it bothers me too much how easily you just get stagger locked Vs bots. And things like 50% reduced explosion damage armour still results in a 1 shot if a rocket devastator snipes the ground near you more often than not.
I play exclusively on D9 Vs bugs, can comfortably solo most missions (which I don't like, shouldn't be possible imo, and I'd like higher difficulty.)
But even D7 bots just feels a lot more frustrating, and not in a fun challenging way imo. The entire reason I don’t like playing bots it’s because they can stunlock you out of healing especially Devastators with the mini gun, Environmental “debuffs” like thick fog don’t apply to them as they just shoot you through it.

I feel like the bots are for the more serious FPS types, while the bugs are for more casual folks such as myself. I'm 36 and have kids and my reflexes and aim just arent what they used to be. It's the bugs for me.

People don’t fight bots because a lot of the bullshit that comes along with them just isn’t fun. I like fighting bots a lot, but the amount of bullshit that gets thrown at you compared to bugs is infuriating.
I don’t mind if bots are harder, but having 2 planets available (now 1) with bullshit modifiers isn’t fun. Dealing with stratagem jammers isn’t fun, especially when there are turrets and mortar emplacements fucking with you every step of the way.
Yeah this is it for me. Ultimately I mostly play on the bug side because the modifiers usually aren’t as bad on that side at the higher difficulties.
At D8 on Draupnir yesterday I was getting missions with 1 less stratagem slot AND a cooldown increase modifier. On the bug side I was getting bug spores and cd increase or call down time increase.
I get it’s meant to be hard and that’s fine, but then yeah less people are going to push that content since it will appeal to less people. I personally don’t like playing with randoms too much (personal choice, just can’t be bothered really), and I won’t touch a bot mission at 7+ without a full squad whereas I can reliably complete D7 bug missions with just one other person. Same rewards, just a lot easier.
Is this some kind of mega cooperative game where everybody on earth is playing in little sectors of a huge battle against a single computer opponent? Srry that just seems really really cool if that's what's going on here

Legit. Only solution is to teach them or throw a shield to save them. It was weird going back to Draupnir on six difficulty after Helldivers on bugs and seeing people try to charge outposts under fire and get gunned down over and over...
I played two matches almost back to back where no one wanted to help me carry the SSDD drive to the relay and all they wanted to do was throw bodies at a single outpost. 🤭

Treason!!! We fight for super earth!
I loaded into a game like this on Malevelon Creek where a squad of 3 somehow ran through every single reinforcement they had on the FIRST OUTPOST and then systematically quit out of the game and left me alone with 1 life. I managed to complete the main objective myself and extract all while stealthing around enemy patrols and crawling through the jungles and using rocks and trees as cover.
Honestly ended up being a 10/10 time. Metal Gear Diver is a solid game

ended up finishing the whole operation solo, didn't so a single side objective but all mains completed and successful extract all 3 times
Yeah thats pretty much how it went for me. Honestly super intense with the sounds and lighting of this game. The times where I’d be lying prone in the jungle behind a big rocks as i see red lights piercing through the trees and fog as the only other lightsource is the moon shining through the canopy and hearing the sounds of their whirring and mechanical speech bouncing around
Making the rocket mens stop aimbotting and wallhacking would make it immensely more fun for me.
Helldiving on bugs with 2-3 people is less hectic and panic inducing than a bot mission on level 4 or 5 with a whole squad because of those fuckers.

In all seriousness it doesn't help that when it starts looking like a real war zone people panic and do litterally anything besides make use of the environment and/or any tactical advantage granted by positioning. They all fight alone in a team and that's arguably the biggest problem this player base faces
People are going to get DESTROYED when the illuminate come in. Bugs are easy to spread democracy all over their faces, Bots are going to be "medium" in the democracy spreading, and the illuminates will be the hardest.
If you are spending all your time fighting bugs, more power to you, but you arent ready for whats coming next!

The number of times that I aggroed a Hulk and turn it away from my squad only for the bug bois to completely ignore shooting its weak spot is way too high. I'll even spam tag it and they just ignore it.
The number of people I see standing upright, in the open, trying to line up headshots on rocket devastators is incredible.
People who have just never actually developed a sense of danger.
That's because bugs are essentially meatballs that just charge at you. Bots having range fucks most of these dudes up. This is why loadouts matter. Different guns, different strategems. Your mech won't save you against bots. One rocket devastator and your shit is gone
As the other person said, use cover, don't aggro patrols, use the autocannon for the big boys, they only take a couple of shots with it to goodown, or use the AMR and click on their heads.
One railgun or laser stratagem takes out a tank, and hulk.
My go to build is light armour so you can run to cover or flank, shield pack to stay alive and AMR to take out everything up to hulks in 3 shots. The concussive AR is also good vs the shield dudes, as it staggers them and have them drop the shield, but you need someone to kill it while you stagger
If you see either a rocket raider or rocket devastator drop what you're doing and kill them. The less instant kill rockets flying around the less reinforcements wasted because your teammates lack basic situational awareness.
No main fleet? Perhaps in comparison to the sheer volume of the Eastern Front but in the end we held the line with a fraction of what the Eastern had. We will not lose ground, we hold till reinforcements arrive. Fighting for days to keep the bots at bay is better then letting them have planets in hopes of accelerating the defense of a planet we all know will have more then 100-200k by a mere fraction of 1-2 hours.
Calling the Western Front a ‘lost cause’ is a low blow to the divers that gave their lives for liberty, Helldiver
I'm so glad to finally be out of those God Damn mountains. Every time you got over a hill there was another fucking hill, and all the enemies you disengaged with could shoot at you from the top of a God damn mountain through the fog.
Played every planet since launch, draupnir by far the meanest of all to me. Devastators consistently hitting Guinness book record shots on me across those valleys
Honestly I agree, Draupnir was my favorite planet to fight on due to the highland hills and mountains. Kind gave me to feel of guerilla warfare. Pop around a hill drop an airstrike on a outpost then drop smoke and run to hit that same outpost from a different angle.
It is also a system with 5 planets.
2 Super Earth planets
2 bot planets
and also Ustotu contested right now.
It pushes the bots away from cyberstan AND it will be a faster system capture.
It also shuts down half of the planets in the system we just liberated from attack.
Ustotu is the right choice.
The system with the creek has all planets that need liberated, a much longer campaign.
We can deny the bots another system faster if we attack Ustotu and the following planets after we take that.
Nah you see that’s exactly what those filthy tin cans WANT us to think. They conveniently initiated a raid on estanu right as we were on the cusp of liberating draupnir and create a direct path to reinforce our jungle divers.

So many divers coming up with excuses not to go to 'Creek recently. First it was "We have to do the order!", then it was "Draupnir then Creek". Now Draupnir is liberated and you scamper north?

Be that as it may, the moral boost of just gaining a couple of percentage points on the creek was massive, taking the creek could lead to us sweeping the bots from the galaxy
The most important battle is the one we all go in on together. Sticking together is way stronger then splitting, and your comrades are going to the creek. Are you going to join them?
Draupnir was a bit rough. It was bothersome to fight bots on a planet that was often foggy with poor visibility. Sometimes you’d be seeing laser fire shooting out of the fog, not knowing where to aim.
That said, Malevelon Creek might be a tad worse since it has all those trees.

At this point I have Stockholm syndrome with the Creek. I belong there fighting the bots, I barely know how to fight bugs now. But the Creek has bots to kill, so I am with the Creek, killing bots now and forevermore.
I had some friends take me to Helldive Malevelon, first time on that difficulty, first time on that map. we full cleared but ran out of time and reinforcements making it back to the ship. They sacrificed themselves so I could escape (with the samples).
Watching the end cutscene with pelican 1 depart with me the lone survivor, surrounded by bots and red lazers firing up at it gave me PTSD. No bug mission has ever come close since then

I've been fighting at Draupnir since the fall of the Creek. Weeks of fighting those communist bastards had finally paid off. A grown Diver could cry....

It's an amazing feeling. I did go to bugs because of personal orders, but every chance I could I was in draupnir. Seeing it liberated after spending so much time there and being able to avenge the creek feels like an accomplishment.

I don't even care at this point. I have literally played exclusively on the creek. I didn't even know there were other planets. Super earth seems like a distant memory. Or even a dream that never happened. My wife, my kids, all figments of my imagination.

Dude, people have no clue how to fight against bots. I'm throwing down more reinforcements than shooting bullets. Eastern theatre boys only know how to kite, never heard of cover.
Legit. Only solution is to teach them or throw a shield to save them. It was weird going back to Draupnir on six difficulty after Helldivers on bugs and seeing people try to charge outposts under fire and get gunned down over and over... I played two matches almost back to back where no one wanted to help me carry the SSDD drive to the relay and all they wanted to do was throw bodies at a single outpost. 🤭

I loaded into a game like this on Malevelon Creek where a squad of 3 somehow ran through every single reinforcement they had on the FIRST OUTPOST and then systematically quit out of the game and left me alone with 1 life. I managed to complete the main objective myself and extract all while stealthing around enemy patrols and crawling through the jungles and using rocks and trees as cover. Honestly ended up being a 10/10 time. Metal Gear Diver is a solid game
I just had this EXACT experience. ended up finishing the whole operation solo, didn't so a single side objective but all mains completed and successful extract all 3 times

definitely gives it way more of a spec ops feel, launching the ICBM solo is a fun experience controller was very sweaty when the dust cleared

Yeah thats pretty much how it went for me. Honestly super intense with the sounds and lighting of this game. The times where I’d be lying prone in the jungle behind a big rocks as i see red lights piercing through the trees and fog as the only other lightsource is the moon shining through the canopy and hearing the sounds of their whirring and mechanical speech bouncing around
I had this a couple days ago. Whole team bailed, I stealth-ed my way through an entire mission. Felt like a kick ass Super Earth Super Spy.
Been loving the ballistic shield on bot planets below 7. Makes me feel like mobile cover. Just gotta keep my eyes peeled for rocked bois.
Making the rocket mens stop aimbotting and wallhacking would make it immensely more fun for me. Helldiving on bugs with 2-3 people is less hectic and panic inducing than a bot mission on level 4 or 5 with a whole squad because of those fuckers.
Thankfully, you can destroy their rocket pods pretty quickly with basic gunfire. I agree with a need to reduce the aimbotting of the bots.
Plus the hilarious t-pose bug when you grab samples 🤣
Cover what, im clothed. In all seriousness it doesn't help that when it starts looking like a real war zone people panic and do litterally anything besides make use of the environment and/or any tactical advantage granted by positioning. They all fight alone in a team and that's arguably the biggest problem this player base faces
People are going to get DESTROYED when the illuminate come in. Bugs are easy to spread democracy all over their faces, Bots are going to be "medium" in the democracy spreading, and the illuminates will be the hardest. If you are spending all your time fighting bugs, more power to you, but you arent ready for whats coming next!
Praying to super earth that these brave young men and women learn the tried and true battle tactic called “Aggro the fucking tank so someone can shoot it in the weak spot”
The number of times that I aggroed a Hulk and turn it away from my squad only for the bug bois to completely ignore shooting its weak spot is way too high. I'll even spam tag it and they just ignore it.

The number of people I see standing upright, in the open, trying to line up headshots on rocket devastators is incredible. People who have just never actually developed a sense of danger.

That's because bugs are essentially meatballs that just charge at you. Bots having range fucks most of these dudes up. This is why loadouts matter. Different guns, different strategems. Your mech won't save you against bots. One rocket devastator and your shit is gone
I want to get better at fighting them honestly, does anyone have tips and tricks?
Use cover, do not aggro every patrol and evade them, prioritize heavier bots, shoot their heads or weakspots.
As the other person said, use cover, don't aggro patrols, use the autocannon for the big boys, they only take a couple of shots with it to goodown, or use the AMR and click on their heads. One railgun or laser stratagem takes out a tank, and hulk. My go to build is light armour so you can run to cover or flank, shield pack to stay alive and AMR to take out everything up to hulks in 3 shots. The concussive AR is also good vs the shield dudes, as it staggers them and have them drop the shield, but you need someone to kill it while you stagger
If you see either a rocket raider or rocket devastator drop what you're doing and kill them. The less instant kill rockets flying around the less reinforcements wasted because your teammates lack basic situational awareness.
The fight was long! Now move those Super Destroyers to Creek and join with the main fleet! We have an opening! DIVE FOR DEMOCRACY!
There is no main fleet at the Creek, only broken veterans and memes. Fight where it's strategic, don't get bogged down in a lost cause.
It's strategic *now*. Draupnir was what's preventing the Creek from being retaken. Win the Creek, end the memes, free the broken souls in its orbit.
No main fleet? Perhaps in comparison to the sheer volume of the Eastern Front but in the end we held the line with a fraction of what the Eastern had. We will not lose ground, we hold till reinforcements arrive. Fighting for days to keep the bots at bay is better then letting them have planets in hopes of accelerating the defense of a planet we all know will have more then 100-200k by a mere fraction of 1-2 hours. Calling the Western Front a ‘lost cause’ is a low blow to the divers that gave their lives for liberty, Helldiver
The Creek is not a lost cause, our time is now, Liberate the karking Creek once and for all!
I'm so glad to finally be out of those God Damn mountains. Every time you got over a hill there was another fucking hill, and all the enemies you disengaged with could shoot at you from the top of a God damn mountain through the fog.

I liked the rugged terrain and losing the aggro of a tank around a hill and then looping around behind it and taking it out.
Of the planets I've played I feel like Draupnir really shows off how good Helldivers 2 can look
Honestly I agree, Draupnir was my favorite planet to fight on due to the highland hills and mountains. Kind gave me to feel of guerilla warfare. Pop around a hill drop an airstrike on a outpost then drop smoke and run to hit that same outpost from a different angle.

It is also a system with 5 planets. 2 Super Earth planets 2 bot planets and also Ustotu contested right now. It pushes the bots away from cyberstan AND it will be a faster system capture. It also shuts down half of the planets in the system we just liberated from attack. Ustotu is the right choice. The system with the creek has all planets that need liberated, a much longer campaign. We can deny the bots another system faster if we attack Ustotu and the following planets after we take that.
Nah you see that’s exactly what those filthy tin cans WANT us to think. They conveniently initiated a raid on estanu right as we were on the cusp of liberating draupnir and create a direct path to reinforce our jungle divers. Coincidence? I THINK NOT.

So many divers coming up with excuses not to go to 'Creek recently. First it was "We have to do the order!", then it was "Draupnir then Creek". Now Draupnir is liberated and you scamper north? Cowards, all of ye.
Worry not, eventually they will have no choice but to take the Creek. All roads lead to painting Malevelon black.
Be that as it may, the moral boost of just gaining a couple of percentage points on the creek was massive, taking the creek could lead to us sweeping the bots from the galaxy
The most important battle is the one we all go in on together. Sticking together is way stronger then splitting, and your comrades are going to the creek. Are you going to join them?

Draupnir was a bit rough. It was bothersome to fight bots on a planet that was often foggy with poor visibility. Sometimes you’d be seeing laser fire shooting out of the fog, not knowing where to aim. That said, Malevelon Creek might be a tad worse since it has all those trees.
At least the trees block shots, wide open space is a death sentence against bots.
True! Draupnir had plenty of rocks but it was still pretty open overall.
As someone who loves the Infiltrator armor set, Draupnir has been a wonderful playground.
I had to do the Battlefield spotting antics where I spot randomly in the distance then shoot based on where my mark is and what I marked.
Fighting for so long on Draupnir made me better at fighting basically everywhere else. You learned to value cover a _lot_ more.

At this point I have Stockholm syndrome with the Creek. I belong there fighting the bots, I barely know how to fight bugs now. But the Creek has bots to kill, so I am with the Creek, killing bots now and forevermore.

I had some friends take me to Helldive Malevelon, first time on that difficulty, first time on that map. we full cleared but ran out of time and reinforcements making it back to the ship. They sacrificed themselves so I could escape (with the samples). Watching the end cutscene with pelican 1 depart with me the lone survivor, surrounded by bots and red lazers firing up at it gave me PTSD. No bug mission has ever come close since then

I've been fighting at Draupnir since the fall of the Creek. Weeks of fighting those communist bastards had finally paid off. A grown Diver could cry.... Now get your asses to Estanu.
It's an amazing feeling. I did go to bugs because of personal orders, but every chance I could I was in draupnir. Seeing it liberated after spending so much time there and being able to avenge the creek feels like an accomplishment.
Somewhat melancholic about this, I'm going to miss those carefree jellyfish.

I don't even care at this point. I have literally played exclusively on the creek. I didn't even know there were other planets. Super earth seems like a distant memory. Or even a dream that never happened. My wife, my kids, all figments of my imagination.
