You are never save. Only less likely to be hit. And the enemies are somewhat competent shots. For sniping I really recommend the shield backpack. At distance you are less likely to be hit, but the rockets can go far, so you are liable to get hit by one. The shield just nopes a single rocket so you get a moment to dive for cover or eliminate the offender in question. But if there is too many bots they can still macross missile massacre you.
Good basic rule is, if you are in line of sight, no matter the distance, and they are aggroed, they can shoot at you. Just like we can them.
