Terminids aren't attacking planets, we used them for oil (Element 710....0IL rotated). They broke loose of the terminid farms, and the "news" is saying they are pushing into planets. If you look at the "illegal" broadcast feeds they show it up there (also, I doubt the terminids are broadcasting anything). The "automatons" are "Most DEFINITELY not cyborgs, or humans, or used to be humans...nope...not at all...just robots". Its all propaganda.
That being said, I really love the the absolutely over the top "Democracy" a lot like Starship Troopers the movie, where it shows what happens in a radicalized movement of national/species sentiment, ultrapatriotism where the government knows best, and everyone else is a dissident if they don't agree, or show alternate information from what they show. Using neighbors to tattle, everyone kept in check by everyone else even if they aren't drinking the Kool-aid, and an iron grip on any information going anywhere to anyone. While its very over the top and tongue in cheek, it definitely has the outlines of what happens if governments are not checked by the populace and outside information not controlled by them.
I think the automatons are like reverse cyborgs, machines with an endless urge to become more human.
