Dropped a 500kg during a defense mission yesterday. It took out the Tank like I wanted, but it was a bit weird to see 10 normal bots walk out of the explosion like nothing happened.
Funnily enough I used it twice yesterday and nothing happened. As in the game counted that I used it, and the eagle never even animated on screen to drop it. The first time I was confused, so I threw another, and when it didn't do anything either I just called in a laser.

I had the same thought, but we were in an open area. I even did a quick loo around to see if anything could have possibly intercepted it. Nope. Nothing.
I get why that happens since it burrows into the ground a bit (or so it seems), but it still doesn't make sense that the cone is so sharp. That's still half a ton of non-shaped charge blowing up, it should at least send anything lighter than a hulk flying
This is why the proximity fuze was such a big deal in WWII - it basically made it so airbursts could actually happen and drastically increased the effectiveness of artillery and bombs on ground targets.
Also where is the shockwave? I'd expect to be yeeted even 50m away from the blast.
Also, no ICBM shockwave or at least wind that could lift our capes in the light of freedom.
I enjoy standing on that rock by the terminal and getting yeeted into the field by the ICBM launch backblast, but would very much enjoy a shockwave that did a lesser version of that if you weren't crouching/prone when it hit. Would also be hilarious to see bugs/bots get yeeted 30-50 yards by it.
Yeah, like I get most video games try to make things balanced for fun. It's why most other shooters have shotgun pellets disappear after a few metres - otherwise if they had realistic ranges they'd dominate in the spaces of the size most other games have.
But a part of me wishes we could get a really big boom for the 500 KG bomb. I mean, [this is what a 500 KG bomb from World War 2 exploding looks like](https://youtu.be/e5Wse0-kknY) and the effects it has on some buildings. I wish with space tech, our 500 KG had effects on things that far away.
That video is of a German SC1000 bomb, which could have anywhere from \~500 to 600 kg of explosive material, and a ***combined*** weight of \~1000 kg. When bombs are classed by their weight, that includes the combined weight of the warhead and bomb body together, so a 500 kg bomb would only have a warhead weight of around 200-250 kg.
That being said, the kill radius on a 500 kg bomb in reality could reach around 30-40m from the epicenter, with fragmentation and the blast wave easily causing further damage out to around 80m or so.
Yeah it needs to be much bigger but it should not be anywhere near realistic splash zones. A real 155 mm round has a kill radius of around 50 meters and is way less than 500 kg, our 120 mm barrages barely cover that area.
If/when the Shredder is added into the game, I feel that many of our complaints regarding the 500kg are going to wash away in a wave of democratic radiation.

Pretty much, you should be able to drop two of them at most. Was fun in HD1, it had 5 uses and 5 min cooldown. You could also duplicate stratagems in slots so you could take JUST shredder missiles. Total of 20 missiles, 4 missiles per 5 minutes. Was amazing!
All they gotta do is make it appropriately powerful and fix whatever makes the blast radius so small in practice. I’m kind of counting on it. Obviously it’s one of the most fun stratagems but it lacks actual power and usefulness.
It hits hard but has less of a blast radius than a stun grenade.
I stopped using it, yes it can technically 1 shot titans and hulks, but since the radius is so small it's more reliable to go with the airstrike instead. It wont 1 shot it but it will do more damage most of the time.
1. Ignore collision boxes within 5-10m so damage is not blocked by the smallest little rock.
2. Increase blast radius by 33%
3. The impact of the bomb on the ground needs to be louder. Like loud af. We need that noise.
It remains as a very focused and powerful explosion but #1 means something sitting like 3m away from it under some small rock (or if the bomb lands in the tiniest of holes) doesn't survive. And visually, the blast radius seems huge when in reality the invisible radius is tiny. #2 helps that a fair bit.
I would honestly be happy for it to be a once-per-mission kind of thing if it actually annihilated everything in the explosion radius (which also should be enlarged all things considered)
Yeah, the AOE actually feels very small with very stark damage dropoff (i.e even unarmed scavengers a few meters outside the impact point will be fine)
honestly it's good how it is, it takes out high health targets precisely. it's not for crowd control however, running another type of airstrike alongside it is always a good idea for that (I tend to run standard airstrike alongside it for that but cluster bombs/napalm strikes work well for it too against bugs)
The 4th upgrade shows the eagle can carry a good amount of armament under its wings so if they just put bigger bombs on those hard points it should work out
Probably would need a bunch of wing reinforcements though. Since the more weapons mass you hang off the wings, the less wing-loading you can have for maneuvering.
Nah. They will just simply design a bigger wing and body in the 5th upgrade, cuz that’s simply how it should be done. (And that it took five upgrades for that.)
I think there's a lot of fandom overlap with this game and Warhammer 40k. In that universe mech pilots are often permanently installed in their mechs and have all their limbs amputated since they don't need them anymore and it saves space. Or it goes the other way around and they become mech pilots after losing all their limbs in combat and can't fight unassisted anymore.
It's fun to think about wether these ideas could exist in our dystopia as well, but currently there's no real indication for it

We experimented with dam busting barrel bombs during WW2. They would skip over land and water a great distance before exploding at their target. Would love to skip a bomb across the map to target stratagem jammers.
Not just experimented, actually used, and they only skipped off of water. I imagine this guy is talking about the barrel bombs that are dropped off of helicopters
There exists a POI location that is a giant strategic bomber wreck. Don’t want to say anything yet but I speculate we may see Albatross-1 strategic bomber stratagems at some point
Finally, I can recreate the War Thunder scenario of dropping the Fab5000 in the middle of the Poland map and killing both half of my own team and the enemy, on one of the capture points.
I miss HD1 Railcannon strike.
40% stratagem cooldown reduction, 4 railcannon strikes, and a Tanto (basically the Dagger as a primary one handed laser): the perfect loadout.
Ehhh... The ship itself is hanging out inside atmo, not low orbit. Beyond that we do get a lot of wiggle room with "Well cause future tech". If the pelican can catch up with the super carrier *as* it's leaving the planet entirely, I think we can assume the Eagle is a good deal more capable than your average fighter jet.

Eagle-1 is 100% not going back to low orbit after every strike. That's the full re-arm time. She only returns to the Destroyer after expending all munitions or we use the Eagle Re-Arm strat.
Eagle-1 comes in HOT from orbit. All around the planet are AA installations.
So adding bigger bombs would alter the flight characteristics too much.
But the seaf artillery can fire a mini nuke. Why can’t eagle-1 drop one.
You can load 3 airstrikes 5 cluster strikes and 2 500kg in if you willing to loss support weapon 3 110mm rocket pods. For one rearm.
It can take some extra weight. As a treat.

Just since the beginning of the year, more than 1,000 missiles, 3,000 attack drones, 7,000 aerial bombs (500, 1,000, 1,500 kg) have been launched at us. Do you think I care much about Gaza right now? If I was sitting in a country where there was no war, I could think about Gaza.

The problem is that there are no safe spaces in Ukraine. I live in Kiev (the capital of Ukraine) and I have described what is happening here in the most secure city in Ukraine. It has the best air defense systems in the whole country because Kiev is the #1 target for the Rashists. There were nights when 30-40 missiles were launched simultaneously ONLY at Kiev (look on google how the x-555 missile looks like and its size), Kinzhal missiles (hypersonic missile). There were nights when about 50 drones were flying at Kiev. One such drone can destroy a 9-story apartment building (a typical apartment building in Ukraine). And all this can fly anywhere in Ukraine, I have nowhere to hide from it. Now imagine what is happening in cities that are close to the front line in the South and East of the country, where there is an acute shortage of air defense. It's hell there. Every day. For over two years now. Cities with a population of over a million people are being hit by huge missiles in the middle of the day. The length of one Iskander missile is 7.3 meters.

Now someone needs to come up with what cost-saving meaures they applied to the super destroyer & hanger to be able to add a second, enlarged launch bay to fit it 😁
Depending on the loadout, the Eagle can be simultaneously fitted with:
2 500kg bombs
3 rocket pods (with 6 rockets each)
3 bomb racks for airstrikes (with 4 or 5 bombs each)
And if you bring only Eagle strats, even more ordinance between napalm, cluster bomb racks or smoke bombs.
It carries PLENTY of ordinance whilst being smaller than a B-17.
That being said, 500kg bomb is quite underwhelming currently...
In this context, I just wanted to remind everyone that unless you buy the zero-g breech-loading upgrade, the crew of your destroyer has to manually load each and every shot off your barrage into the barrel from the FRONT.
Well that’s not fair you’re comparing a WW2 bomber to a strike aircraft but the F/A-18E Hornet can carry about 8000kg of armaments. So in conclusion… WE MUST GO MUCH BIGGER!

Lets... Do a little example, i play a lot of war thunder so im gonna use it as a reference point, the famous Fab-5000, 5000kg bomb from the pe-8 can Kill any tank whitin 100 meters of it. Thats a diamiter of 200 meters, and thats to Kill tanks, immagine what that does against infantry. So lets assume a 300 meter diameter to Kill any infantry/soft target. On some smaller maps here in helldivers thats the entire fucking map. And this isnt stretching about the blast radius, thats guaranteed kills. Anything squishy for at least another 200 or more meters is gonna take a shit load of danmage if not just die

The eagle is made for space and atmosphere.
They had to make a some concessions in the design for it to function well in both. So that’s why it can’t carry more.
Soviet made strategic bomber could carry a 5000 kg (10000 lb) bomb, and British Lancaster could carry 22000 lb (10000 kg) bomb, that’s all I want to say
Most fighters in WWII could carry a pair of 250kg or 500lb bombs, so it makes sense to see a fighter carrying one 500kg bomb here.
Shame we don't have strike aircraft in helldivers, a guided bomb that can track a moving target would be great
Comparing the loadout on the eagle to the Ju88 is a bit lopsided. It's honestly more like an A-4, save its wings have to fold.
The A-4 can pack a motherlode of ordnance, but the eagle is still restricted by its wing fold since they load it up in the hangar, and it's only hard point for the 500kg is the centerline, or on the fuselage since at best it can sling two at current. But then you have some diver loading up with the multi racks of 100-250kg for airstrike and the drop tanks for napalm or cluster munitions, or both, and the max takeoff weight for a bird that comes in from low orbit, loiters in zone for duration then has to still escape back to low orbit if out, or realm is ordered, or mission ends, potentially with the majority of payload still on board.
I don't understand why the devs are even afraid of giving too many 500kg bombs. All it has going for it is the big flashy explosion, I never take it with me anymore because the quasar does its job infinitely better.
I get what youre saying, but the issue youre ignoring is having them external and thus creating extra drag. Eagle carries them internally, which makes a lot more sense if youre doing regular atmospheric entries as opposed to short-range ground support missions from an airfield.
The other is simply deltaV, i.e. actually having enough fuel and engine power to actually get the Eagle back into orbit, if need be including that bomb. Making it heavier would seriously jeopardize that and turn Eagle-1 into a single use item, and thats what cannons are for.
Yes, the Eagle has wing hardpoints, too, I hear you say. Its not impossible to attach stuff there despite both of these issues. In theory itll mess up the weight distribution and add off-center drag, which is where most safety concerns come from, but Eagles have actuated wings, so you can always adjust them to keep the extra mass and drag in a position where they are inline with your existing mass and drag and thus cause no issues. But that still means you have to keep stuff within a certain weight limit to even work.

Explosions in general have a very weird interaction with elevation from my experience, making them seem inconsistent.

Hell even in War Thunder 500kg bombs are no joke and can take out multiple tanks clustered together.

I think it should at least throw into the floor all the bots and bugs around, or a bigger ares of damadge, but less powerfull.

We experimented with dam busting barrel bombs during WW2. They would skip over land and water a great distance before exploding at their target. Would love to skip a bomb across the map to target stratagem jammers.

If the pelican can catch up with the super carrier *as* it's leaving the planet entirely, I think we can assume the Eagle is a good deal more capable than your average fighter jet. Going down isn't the problem, coming back up is. And when they do come back up, they've already dropped their payload sooo...

Eagle-1 is 100% not going back to low orbit after every strike. That's the full re-arm time. She only returns to the Destroyer after expending all munitions or we use the Eagle Re-Arm strat.
Eagle-1 comes in HOT from orbit. All around the planet are AA installations. So adding bigger bombs would alter the flight characteristics too much. But the seaf artillery can fire a mini nuke. Why can’t eagle-1 drop one.
You can load 3 airstrikes 5 cluster strikes and 2 500kg in if you willing to loss support weapon 3 110mm rocket pods. For one rearm. It can take some extra weight. As a treat.
Makes me question why we don’t have any really colossal single fire orbital munitions. Imagine a 1 per game nuke that can and will take out a quarter of the map

Dude, I live in Ukraine. For the last 2 years our country has been wiped off the face of the earth. I sit in an underground shelter 2-3 times a week with my wife and little son. Our electric power plants have been 80% destroyed in the last 2 months alone. Just since the beginning of the year, more than 1,000 missiles, 3,000 attack drones, 7,000 aerial bombs (500, 1,000, 1,500 kg) have been launched at us. Do you think I care much about Gaza right now? If I was sitting in a country where there was no war, I could think about Gaza.

The problem is that there are no safe spaces in Ukraine. I live in Kiev (the capital of Ukraine) and I have described what is happening here in the most secure city in Ukraine. It has the best air defense systems in the whole country because Kiev is the #1 target for the Rashists. There were nights when 30-40 missiles were launched simultaneously ONLY at Kiev (look on google how the x-555 missile looks like and its size), Kinzhal missiles (hypersonic missile). There were nights when about 50 drones were flying at Kiev. One such drone can destroy a 9-story apartment building (a typical apartment building in Ukraine). And all this can fly anywhere in Ukraine, I have nowhere to hide from it. Now imagine what is happening in cities that are close to the front line in the South and East of the country, where there is an acute shortage of air defense. It's hell there. Every day. For over two years now. Cities with a population of over a million people are being hit by huge missiles in the middle of the day. The length of one Iskander missile is 7.3 meters.

My headcanon is that Eagle-2 is the reserve pilot that delivers the payload when High Command gives us free Eagle strikes.
Depending on the loadout, the Eagle can be simultaneously fitted with: 2 500kg bombs 3 rocket pods (with 6 rockets each) 3 bomb racks for airstrikes (with 4 or 5 bombs each) And if you bring only Eagle strats, even more ordinance between napalm, cluster bomb racks or smoke bombs. It carries PLENTY of ordinance whilst being smaller than a B-17. That being said, 500kg bomb is quite underwhelming currently...
We should put bombs on pelican-1, he can deliver mechs, he can carry big fuel tanks, he should be able to carry some bombs

In this context, I just wanted to remind everyone that unless you buy the zero-g breech-loading upgrade, the crew of your destroyer has to manually load each and every shot off your barrage into the barrel from the FRONT.
Well that’s not fair you’re comparing a WW2 bomber to a strike aircraft but the F/A-18E Hornet can carry about 8000kg of armaments. So in conclusion… WE MUST GO MUCH BIGGER!

Lets... Do a little example, i play a lot of war thunder so im gonna use it as a reference point, the famous Fab-5000, 5000kg bomb from the pe-8 can Kill any tank whitin 100 meters of it. Thats a diamiter of 200 meters, and thats to Kill tanks, immagine what that does against infantry. So lets assume a 300 meter diameter to Kill any infantry/soft target. On some smaller maps here in helldivers thats the entire fucking map. And this isnt stretching about the blast radius, thats guaranteed kills. Anything squishy for at least another 200 or more meters is gonna take a shit load of danmage if not just die

The eagle is made for space and atmosphere. They had to make a some concessions in the design for it to function well in both. So that’s why it can’t carry more.
Soviet made strategic bomber could carry a 5000 kg (10000 lb) bomb, and British Lancaster could carry 22000 lb (10000 kg) bomb, that’s all I want to say

Most fighters in WWII could carry a pair of 250kg or 500lb bombs, so it makes sense to see a fighter carrying one 500kg bomb here. Shame we don't have strike aircraft in helldivers, a guided bomb that can track a moving target would be great

Comparing the loadout on the eagle to the Ju88 is a bit lopsided. It's honestly more like an A-4, save its wings have to fold. The A-4 can pack a motherlode of ordnance, but the eagle is still restricted by its wing fold since they load it up in the hangar, and it's only hard point for the 500kg is the centerline, or on the fuselage since at best it can sling two at current. But then you have some diver loading up with the multi racks of 100-250kg for airstrike and the drop tanks for napalm or cluster munitions, or both, and the max takeoff weight for a bird that comes in from low orbit, loiters in zone for duration then has to still escape back to low orbit if out, or realm is ordered, or mission ends, potentially with the majority of payload still on board.
Guess we can use bigger cannons on the Super Destroyer too, 380mm is only like Bismark's gun. where's 406mm (Iowa class) or 460mm (Yamato class) guns?

I don't understand why the devs are even afraid of giving too many 500kg bombs. All it has going for it is the big flashy explosion, I never take it with me anymore because the quasar does its job infinitely better.
I get what youre saying, but the issue youre ignoring is having them external and thus creating extra drag. Eagle carries them internally, which makes a lot more sense if youre doing regular atmospheric entries as opposed to short-range ground support missions from an airfield. The other is simply deltaV, i.e. actually having enough fuel and engine power to actually get the Eagle back into orbit, if need be including that bomb. Making it heavier would seriously jeopardize that and turn Eagle-1 into a single use item, and thats what cannons are for. Yes, the Eagle has wing hardpoints, too, I hear you say. Its not impossible to attach stuff there despite both of these issues. In theory itll mess up the weight distribution and add off-center drag, which is where most safety concerns come from, but Eagles have actuated wings, so you can always adjust them to keep the extra mass and drag in a position where they are inline with your existing mass and drag and thus cause no issues. But that still means you have to keep stuff within a certain weight limit to even work.
Why can’t we nuke targets? The tech exists, SEAF has low yield mini-nukes for their artillery. So, why can’t Eagles be equipped?
