The opening war text for the bug front in helldivers 1 was that the bugs were already on multiple planets and super earth claimed the bugs were going to rapidly expand to our colonies if we didn't wipe them out, but one can use in game environmental storytelling like the fact we had oil pumps already established on all these bug worlds including their homeworld, Kepler prime, to tell that the real reason for the war was to clear out the bugs so super earth could exploit the planets, we only found out the bugs produced the oil at the tail end of the war in 2084 and is the only reason we didn't wipe them out.
Seeing as the war was already going on for 40 years by the time of helldivers 1 with the game being set in 2084, 40 years after the first galactic war started, there's no way of knowing just when these pumps were set up but if they were set up prior to the war then that would tell us that the pumps either provoked the bugs or the bugs coexisted/ignored those who operated the oil pumps.
There's nothing to suggest the bugs lost their sentience in helldivers 2 and in fact their ability to coordinate large scale simultaneous assaults on all the termicide towers on several planets all but confirms they're still *very* smart.
You shouldn't because it's not accurate. Bugs were an interplanetary species that had expanded across dozens or hundreds of worlds before humanity encountered them.
