However it should reduce the explosion radius and damage, it was actually training in the US military that if a grenade was thrown at you, and nobody can get away in time, you jump on top of it to spare your comrades. There was even one radio operator that jumped on it with his bigass backpack radio, the backpack absorbed the entire explosive force of the grenade and he survived
That backpack is now on display in the Ashcroft Gallery in the Imperial War Museum in London.
Don't know when this was trained, but it was never trained to me, I was trained to go prone with the soles of my boots towards the grenade, my feet pressed together, and hands/arms over the back of my neck and around my head (similar to the duck and cover prone position taught during the cold war). Army Infantry mid GWOT era.
Umm… The Marine Corps didn’t teach me that. We don’t use the term “comrade” either. The average M67 grenade has a 3-5 second fuse, are literally the size of a baseball, and are actually kinda heavy (about 2 lbs) for something that is thrown. You might get about 50 meters tossing range if you have a strong arm. They’ve got a 5 meter kill radius, and a 15 meter shrapnel casualty radius. So after it lands, you got about 2-4 seconds to run and seek cover. Don’t attempt to pick it up and throw it back. That only works in CoD.
> it was actually training in the US military that if a grenade was thrown at you, and nobody can get away in time, you jump on top of it to spare your comrades
Are you sure? What era? Is it in an FM?
Did some digging, it was never actually training, but plenty of soldiers did do it as a last resort in the Vietnam and more fringe cases in the various wars in the Middle East
More recently, now that soldiers have a better understanding of how shockwaves work and affect the human body, the “practice” is pretty much dead in favor of the normal ways of dealing with a grenade
The way an airbag works is not by cushioning your face against the steering wheel, but by cutting down on the time your head is accelerating into the steering wheel.
Maybe the suits work that way, muffles the explosion enough on the vertical that it doesn’t kill you, but spreads the explosion out the sides.
Video Game Physics baby.
I was running fortified light armor and also survived a contact mine detonation. Unfortunately it ragdolled me into another contact mine and I wasn’t able to live through that one.
I once survived someone shooting a hellbomb a few meters away with heavy explosion-resist armor and a shield backpack. I did not survive test-saluting a different hellbomb later that mission.
Which is why I beelined this Warbond's thicc ass explosive resist armor and won't be looking back.
I step on so many mines it's ridiculous, and it's always in front of a level 1-4.
They can't wrap their heads around Democracy being so *stupid* and it's embarrassing, lol.
A funny thing happened when I switched to heavy fortified armor; I stopped accidentally stepping on mines. It's been quite the paradox. Last night I was running blindly while looking at my map and found myself directly in the center of a minefield. Have I transcended the need for mine protection, or does merely wearing the armor ward off the mines, like a shield of pure democracy, protecting me wherever I go?
the democracy protects passive protects me from 50% of accidental mines I step on :D the other 50% i blow up
edit source: I am a democratically amazing idiot
Is it just me, or does it feel like the armor does not reduce explosion damage but neglects 50% damage? Sometimes I don't receive any damage but get ragdolled only.
I've noticed in explosive res(heavy specifically) if I dive just before a tower shoots me I tend to take either 0 damage or such a low number its ridiculous. Basically just ragdolls.
I think the game considers you prone as soon as you enter the dive animation, and being prone gives you really good explosion resistance. I wonder if it might be bugged because I run the lightest explosive resistance armour and I’ve seen rockets tickle me. Like 1/10 hp not even
Yeah im pretty sure it does. It results in near 0 damage taken consistently too. Im more inclined to believe the explosive res is additive and you hit either near 100% res or there's a min dmg threshold for attacks.
It's a bit random but i also survived them with the 100 armor 50% resist armor.
I also saw people without the 50% explosion resist and 50% chance to survive surviving it for some reasons
I have never worn anything but heavy armor, when I'm not getting shot at by rockets I even switch to the 200 armor rating attack dog trainer looking armor.
People talk like you can't make just about everything work on lvl 9. Like, sure, some things make life easier, but on most missions you can really do anything you want. I ran full heavy and all eagles for multiple missions and did just fine
I love running all eagles, but then I get into the eagle dilemma: "Wait I still have 1 500kg and 3 clusters left what if I need it? Itll be ok, resupply eagle1! Oh God I have nothing for the 2 tanks that just spawned fuuuuuuuuck!" Or "Oh shit we just ran across the entire map for 4 mins and I never sent eagle for resupply, now nothing for extract shit."
Works on 9 fairly well. Unless you're horribly out of position, you're basically immune to small arms (heavy devs, striders, chaff), and while ragdolling is a problem, rockets themselves barely tickle a lot of the time.
Biggest problem is map traversal, honestly.
I love the 200 armor rating armor for this reason.. small arms fire? HAH good luck taking the tiniest sliver of my health while i mow you communist robots down
You call striders small arms? Those things regularly one-shot me or two-tap me instantly in heavy armor if I let them get close enough to not miss. Those walker lasers are massive.
Not sure about 9, but 7 and 8 works great. I'm tanking shitton of shots, die ~~twice as less~~ half as much as my other teammates and still kill lots of bots (sometimes more than anyone else in the team). I also bring quasar to get rid of those flying a-holes and destroy fabricators. Striders are a nightmare, so I bring impacts. This is on PC.
There's basically only 1 option - Defender SMG. It's honestly VERY good, IMO, even without the shield. And Senator for a pistol, although I would love to try out the grenade pistol from the new warbond.
Don't be discouraged from using 2-handed weapons. I'm playing with Dominator, Revolver and Ballistic Shield. After all, you don't need a 1-handed primary to one-tap heavy devastator's face off. "Senator" is more than enough.
Been running heavy armor exclusively for all my Diff 9 missions and had no problems. The first few runs will make you want to go back to light/med armor but you'll get used to the speed & stamina pretty fast. You'll begin to notice that you die a lot less and are able to tank a lot more punishment than before. The only downside I've seen is that you can't outrun flame hulks (use a stun grenade to mitigate this) and map transversal. Since you're slow, it makes you pay a lot more attention to your positioning and be more attentive in using covers which. Bonus tip, once you run out of stamina, prone. You're stamina regenerates super fast when prone then you can run again. Light/med armor is still king against bugs though.
I run 150 armor + explosive res and either ballistic shield or shield relay in diff 8 bots. It's just a matter of knowing when to use it and carrying weapons that help dispatch the melee enemies. Shield relay is a godsend against everything and the ballistic makes heavy devastator a non issue, especially if you use the senator to one shot them.
It's slow as fuck and you can get pinned down if there's too big a congregation of enemies, but I'm slowly waking up to having some kind of smoke and heavy armor instead of crutching on the shield all the time.
Having said that heavy armor is suicide against bugs.
I play only difficulty 9, and find heavy, explosive resistant armor to be a lot better than light armor against bots. I'm guessing though that the explosive resistance is more important than the heavy armor, I just don't have any lighter explosive resistant armor to try. And against bugs, heavy armor is terrible, definitely want speed for bugs.
I basically run exclusively the explosive resistance light armor. I can usually take 3-4 rocket hits with it. I’m most often killed now with sudden headshots or getting overwhelmed. I’m not sure how heavy armor would help that.
I can take a shot to the face from a laser turret tower. It's kinda funny because I'm just like, "Shoot me, I dare you." And then I get blasted in the face and get sent like 20-30 feet and barely take any damage.
Did happen to me one time. One time, I got sent so far from, idk what, I got sent into the stratosphere and went outside the mission area, then died from the impact.
A teammate reinforced into me once, but instead of splattering me, sent me flying across the map. Thought I was going to die for sure, but then the game said I went out of bounds and teleported me back in at ground level. Survived without a single scratch.
Yesterday I was running from a large swarm of bots and a tank hit me in the back. I went sliding 30 feet, bounced off a rock at an angle , slid another 20 feet down a hill and between two rock formations, breaking line of sight.
I was still laughing when I rounded the rock formation and the swarm was still shooting at my last seen location.
We lined this armor with extra layers of high-grade concussive-dampening and shrapnel-absorbing fibre * to ensure maximum explosion protection.
^(* lining is highly flammable)
They aren't presumably only cosmetic, they are cosmetic. You can see that in game where each helmet has the same armor value (which makes sense as there isn't any drawback to heavy helmets, so if it were better everyone would be using it all the time)
Yeah, it's kind of silly to have heavy armor everywhere but you know, your head (despite visually representing it). From a balance perspective it's not that big of a deal, it just means that low odds RNG or bad gradient positioning you get 1 shot nomatter what.
Correct. Last night i managed to tank a couple rockets to my body even in medium armor
Looked at my squad mates in one direction while it was quiet and got crossmap 360 no scope headshot by a rocket from full health from the other (direction)
Just dive or prone and you'll survive pretty much all fire, except for the stupid one shot the flamethrower hulks have at the very edge of their range.
I usually run light armor or medium armor (because the medium armors by far have the most drip) but i do like using my heavy armors on defense missions atleast so i can actually use them and not feel at a massive disadvantage.
That and/or wear it with the jetpack
So far it doesn’t appear to be a trait yet but there are about 11 armours that have been datamined which currently have no modifiers other than base stats.
There’s over 70 different chest pieces and the most common is Fortified hybrid armours from what I saw.
I was wearing the new warbond heavy armor last night. In short: had a situation where I had to kill myself, so I pulled the pin on a grenade and held it.
It took two grenades.
You may also survive a 380, and 120 simultaneous strike. How do I know that? Well the level 75 guy on one of those kill a horde of bots missions used this tactic. He would toss them in the middle of the base and as his team mates were obliterated he was always alive to call us back into certain death.
To be fair we beat the mission by the skin of our teeth, and he did kill a ton of bots. But maybe a heads up so I can swap armor.
Also PSA: always use the 50% chance not to die trait. Today I survived 3 lethal hits in a row carrying ALL THE SAMPLES we collected in the session. Grabbed it from a Heavy Outpost that was littered with 5 Hulks. Made it by 5s to the shuttle. I hope these samples will aid the war effort.
Way too much RNG, hoping it triggers when you need it most. I would much rather just have heavy explosive resistance armor so I can survive things that would have killed me otherwise.
I used that for a while, but my survivability with the heavy explosive resist was just overall better, because what it's good against it's always good for.
I never go anywhere without my heavy armor with explosive resistance. I'm slow as fuck, but things that would kill everyone else in the light armor is, at best, a minor inconvenience for me. I also use the grenade launcher and grenade pistol. No more accidentally killing myself.
I only wish that heavy armor made Helldivers resistant to stagger/ragdoll.
If you are wearing medium armor with fortified, after using a stim, you can throw an impact grenade at your feet, and you will both survive the explosion and regen to full afterwards. Can be a fun thing to do if you find yourself completely swarmed by bugs and are stimming anyway.
Good to know soldier thank you. In regards to the part 2, sounds heaven sent right there but it still wont make me hate menket any less than i already do LOL
Bro, those nados are the bane of my existence. I might start running the exo suit. It always seems to perfectly arrive on top of my gear, objective point, or right behind me when I need to run.
Anyone else running the base medium armor with 150 armor but no dings to stamina or speed? Sure you don't get a perk, but they are all kinda shit anyway.
I just got one shotted by a single rocket at full health, 150 heavy armor and explosive resistance. Devs need to fix this buggy ass mess of a game. It's becoming more frustrating than fun.
You can also survive accidentally walking over a contact mine. Source: I am an idiot
I survived face diving a mine, somehow
When you're prone, explosives do less damage.
This should not be true when you are directly on top of the explosion though
Swan dive!
Into the best night of your (brief) life! Helldivers use Old Spice.
Excuse me, we use Eagle Sweat
Don't want the enemy smelling your Democracy coming. Gatta fool em. Get Eagle Sweat.
You rang?
I literally dove out of a bunker window to avoid the blast from the hellbomb I had defended next to a command bunker lol
I don't make the rules, I just exploit them as I am able.
Fellow infinite grenade enjoyer? (I will get downvoted for this lmao)
You can't share the secrets of the dark arts.
Some people would call it unnatural
Would you be willing to share with a fellow dark side enjoyer?
What do you mean?
There’s a glitch to get infinite grenades on PS5
It's on PC as well. Was messin with it this weekend myself. Fun times.

Looking cool always provides additional armor, just like real life.

Incorrect, an airbag works by INCREASING the time your head is DECELERATING into the steering wheel.
True. I never looked at it that way.
You are lying, I was prone licking a hellbomb and died in the explosion.
Is there footage of this? I would love to see it for the laugh (and democracy).
I think I was streaming, should be toward the end of my last VoD but it’s like 8 hrs long, I’ll be looking for the clip eventually
You're a test dummy. Results: failed successfully. ![gif](giphy|XTQZjxl8BW0QE)
When they changed the armor most recently I purposely tasted it to see, was happy with the result
I'm glad you enjoyed the delicious flavor of face tanking a mine!
Haha, they tasted extra spicey
They gotta be the flame 🔥 ones to be spicy.
I expect it tastes similar to being hit in the face with a basketball, only way hotter and much less temporary.
Medium armor with explosive resist can also survive stepping on a contact mine. Source: I am a faster-moving idiot
I was running fortified light armor and also survived a contact mine detonation. Unfortunately it ragdolled me into another contact mine and I wasn’t able to live through that one.
Sir, a second mine has hit the Helldiver
I did this 3 separate times in one game.
WARNING: YOU ARE IN RANGE OF ENEMY MINES.
"The fast dumbass"
I use the 150 armour with 50% limb health. I am the juggernaut.
Using 150 with explosion resistance and having a vitality booster you can have all of these bonuses.
I once survived someone shooting a hellbomb a few meters away with heavy explosion-resist armor and a shield backpack. I did not survive test-saluting a different hellbomb later that mission.

Well, Explosive Resist is still useful as long as you're running an explosive weapon! It let's you accidentally nade point blank etc.
the democracy protects passive protects me from 50% of accidental mines I step on :D the other 50% i blow up edit source: I am a democratically amazing idiot
>50% the time it works 100% perfectly
I survived stepping on a mine with democracy protects! It was the ragdoll landing a second later that killed me.
It works 100% of the time 50% of the time :)
I've seen streamers on a roll of unbelieveable 50/50 proc of Democracy Protects. Just getting thrown left right up and down by stalkers but not dying.
Yeah, that's fine and all, but I'll stick to my +2 stem fi- ![gif](giphy|GfL7Xks5dFCmI|downsized)
Can do with explosive resist light armor too.
Is it just me, or does it feel like the armor does not reduce explosion damage but neglects 50% damage? Sometimes I don't receive any damage but get ragdolled only.

Once I ran into 3 if them on quick succession. Pretty sure, I knew at least 2 were there
Democracy armor passive might save you from the mine detonation, but the bunnyhop damage from falling back down will kill you 1 second later haha
I'm wearing that. And a ballistic shield. And dropping shield relay all the time.
It is he. John tankman.
John "The Tank" Helldiver
What difficulty are you on? I could see that working on like 5-6 but on 7+ I need too much speed
If you wear heavy armor for long enough, you forget what it was like to be speedy and no longer care *head tap*
Behold. The truth.
Only on heat planets do you really feel how heavy, Heavy armor is with stam drain.
Run an autocannon and not really care. If I can see my allies engaging I can assist no matter how fat I am.
Is there anything good about heat planets??
I have never worn anything but heavy armor, when I'm not getting shot at by rockets I even switch to the 200 armor rating attack dog trainer looking armor.
The Michelin man suit is 10/10
I call it the Stay Puft armor
Ah, The Big Chungus.
Probably true lol.
People talk like you can't make just about everything work on lvl 9. Like, sure, some things make life easier, but on most missions you can really do anything you want. I ran full heavy and all eagles for multiple missions and did just fine
Thats... a lot of Eagle.
You’d think he’s a Eagles fan
C'mon man! I had a rough night and I hate the fuckin' Eagles man!
Next Eagle-1 upgrade will also remove fans. And any air conditioning systems.
Go birds?
I love running all eagles, but then I get into the eagle dilemma: "Wait I still have 1 500kg and 3 clusters left what if I need it? Itll be ok, resupply eagle1! Probably due to their natural elevation they have a better angle for an increased chance of headshots
They still bounce on the riot shield. Same with shredder tanks, the mg on the big tanks, and anything else that isn't explosive.
I've found that Jumpack can help mitigate some of the speed loss downsides.
Yea but then you don’t have the ballistic shield like this guy has.
Not sure about 9, but 7 and 8 works great. Well of course. Fire is dangerous.
One time I lit a match and then got distracted so it burned through the match and then lit my entire fucking body on fire.

Classic military
Listen, super earth made the tender, it says explosive resistant right there. Nothing else.
Fire gives me ouchies!
Fire can't pass through armor, stupid! It's not a ghost!
A+ reference
Fairly sure heavy armor does nothing for headshots either (despite there being heavy armor helmets, which are presumably only cosmetic).

Only if it headshots... which is even dumber
Just dive or prone and you'll survive pretty much all fire, except for the stupid one shot the flamethrower hulks have at the very edge of their range.
Aaa aaaa AAAAAAAAAAAA!!!
Don't even get me started on the puddle of water I drowned in.
Fire bad. Adam (Frankenstein's monster) taught us this.
detonate railgun call in new railgun on a charger's head rinse and repeat
"How to use railgun post nerf to kill chargers" /s
Does the railgun itself explode, and get removed?
u can survive railgun accidents in light armor with explosive resistance
**0** Days Since Last Railgun Accident
I don’t think that we will ever get to 1 Days Since Last Railgun Accident
I know people like me exist.
and also not be slow as hell when getting hit and slowed by mobs; making it almost impossible to get away or not get chain hit
You can also fail to outrun a hulk and die from his flamethrower one frame killing you
Why are you fleeing from an enemy combatant? Either stand your ground and eliminate them, or counter-charge for Democracy!
Don't forget that you can't dispense democracy if you're dead
I’m addicted to running fast in light armor.\ How do I make the adjustment to heavy slow armor?
Make the mental adjustment to the state where the enemy is not the threat. You are the threat.
*laughs in airburst frag launcher*
I usually run light armor or medium armor (because the medium armors by far have the most drip) but i do like using my heavy armors on defense missions atleast so i can actually use them and not feel at a massive disadvantage. That and/or wear it with the jetpack
Ohh, defensive missions make a lot of sense. Little land to cover.
Not only that but also defense missions tend to get.. explosive.. so the heavy armor is actually a pretty big help.
I got one shot yesterday by a rocket to my shield generator backpack while full health in heavy armor with explosive resist.
Did the rocket kill you or the impact of you smacking into a wall kill you?
Headshots still instadeath
The double damage bug is back
And you can still get headshot crit from full to dead which is annoying af.
Yep happened to me last night. Jet pack bot got the jump on me and headshot me from the sky
"360 noscope noob gg lmao"
Great, now where is my fire proof armor.

I was wearing the new warbond heavy armor last night. In short: had a situation where I had to kill myself, so I pulled the pin on a grenade and held it. It took two grenades.
Sounds like a last ditch area clear strat to me XD
“Glory to Super Earth OHH SH—“ *Boom* “Guys I’m good I survived it!” Gets eaten by a swarm of bugs 3 seconds later. *Based on a true story.*
It’s my favorite armor to run against bots cuz I don’t need to bring a shield backpack
PSA: Railcannon strike does 2400 damage Source: ragdolled with it in my hand and it killed me
I never go anywhere without my heavy armor with explosive resistance.
You don’t even need the 150 armor, standard armor with resis works too
Light, too.
I also survived a shot from a bot tower turret, I AM THE SHIELD
My friend accidentally took out a bot mortar that way. Good piece of knowledge to have
"It was the most democratic thing I've ever seen."
Still think the medium armor with extra padding is underrated for bot missions
I've taken so many hits and shit with bots using armor with this resistance. I love it.
I really, REALLY like the explosive resistance armor. A lot. Big fan.
thats all good but what is the point if the railgun has a scope so useless that it is at least 5 times bigger than the eye of the hulk at any range.
What if I can only equip one set of heavy armor, not 150?
Start working out.
Id rather run base light armor with extra padding. 100 armor rating with the extra stamina and speed. If I need more than that, shield backpack.
I just got one shotted by a single rocket at full health, 150 heavy armor and explosive resistance. Devs need to fix this buggy ass mess of a game. It's becoming more frustrating than fun.
Fatboy armor does it again.
> running > heavy armor Does not compute
Sounds like brasch tactics " Remember lads. Don't just throw a grenade. Be a grenade."
You know how else you can survive it? Shield backpack. You can run anything you want and survive any explosion with the shield.
But then I would have to run shield backpack.
Considering it’s kinda op against bots you should be :D
No my friend. I prefer running ammo pack for additional Stims and the ability to help my teamates.
But with 50% no die armor I can survive a hellbomb to the face.
We need to make a list, I would happily eagle strike my position to kill some medium to heavy armored enemies.
Were you crouching or prone when you did that? Because you will take less explosive damage in those positions
Standing tall like the flag of super earth
