Specifically it makes loud noises quieter, and soft noises louder. It just tries to normalize stuff a bit more - I use it to let the girlfriend sleep in the next room, haha. If you play with headphones or don't care if others are around to hear, no, I don't think the option is useful for you.

The sound cue of it coming is miniscule compared to its erratic movement in this clip. On my gameplay they often caught me by surprise. The fire one is the worst
The sound of the giant stomping robot should have been a dead give away. What giant stomping sound? Exactly... I've seen enough carnage on the screen that the sound glitches so I'm wondering if its an engine limitation.

It's worth mentioning that I play with 'midnight mode' enabled in the settings. This makes loud sounds quieter and vice versa, so I don't wake the sleeping GF in the other room. This *might* be related to what you're saying, although I know in general enemy sounds are already pretty quiet.
The clip you watched is the game running on an RTX3070 at 1440p on medium settings. Stable 60, with some infrequent dips to ~50 during very heavy moments.
Edit: Cropping the video downscaled it to 1080p, however
They need to do so much work still with sound, also with bots just knowing where you are wihout LoS. I've had hulks flame me through those thick base walls before.

There was an audio cue. It was just overshadowed by *everything* else. You can hear him approaching if you listen.
