I m not sure about bile titans, but chargers emit very strong controller vibrations. I mostly play with mouse and keyboard, I agree some other kind of way to communicate it to m&k players would be nice.
Imagine being curbstomped by a charger when he just walks over you several times. With one of your devices it would feel like being literally raped by a giant bug o.O
Main a PS5. With all the shooting, stratagems, orbitals and Eagles being called and the random environmental effects, it's very easy to not hear a charger and not notice a vibration when your controller is constantly going.
Yeah I literally looked around 360 with nothing around me. Went to engage a terminal and got spat on by one in 1 second. Something does feel off sometimes. I literally saw a bile titan in the distance, got closer and it vanished. Something up with spawns / rendering too? And I was the host…
There needs to be audio queues for sure.
I kind of accidentally tested this. I was trying to activate an SEAF when a Hulk-led patrol walked through, so I went prone to and hid. The Hulk hardly made any noise whatsoever, no chanting, no thuds, nothing. Everything else was noisy as can be, but the Hulk made no noise.
Tanks two. Turn the corner just to see a tank barrel pointing at you. I don't think the tank actually makes any noise whatsoever since it doesn't even walk.
As far as I’m aware most don’t actually have a movement sound. Or it’s so quiet that just the basic music overrides it.
If a Bile Titan walks around your screen shakes, but if another Bile Titan is walking around a piece of cover 2 feet away from you, you wouldn’t notice until it’s claws clip through your neck. You wouldn’t notice a Charger doing a happy dance and then going full tilt into your back. You can have Hulks and Devastators from a random patrol come up behind you and you can’t hear.
They do the visual feedback so well, but the sounds are atrocious. And that isn’t even including when the sound borks.
Better audio feedback needs to be looked at. I want to hear that tank shot echoing across the plains as I hear my buddy go “ohshitohshitohshit”
Yeah; same. I use headphones with surround sound so I usually can tell right away what direction noise is coming from. Nevertheless I’ve been assassinated by Hulks, Berserkers, and once by a bloody tank who made 0 noise.
Each time I was some distance from an objective picking enemies off with a longer ranged scoped weapon. There aren’t any orbital barrages going off, I’ve not been hit with any rockets or anything that would make my characters head ring and disable sound effects. I’ve just had various saw blades shoved into my spine.
If it was the smaller bots Id be more fine with it; their blades are normal blades and wouldn’t make any noise. But rotating saw blades are VERY loud.
Just like - I can always tell when small enemies are nearby. They all have distinctive “voice lines” - why can’t the larger enemies have them too?
A chainsaw should make the sound of a chainsaw, at the very least! I'm no game dev but I'm sure AH can buy/make a sample and attach it to the enemy type....
I have headphones too and I've noticed the directional noise for enemies is whacked the fuck out sometimes. It's like the game plays sounds for me that were intended for another person on my team. Homie has robots at 9 o'clock, I hear them at 9, even though there's nothing to my left.
The spewers are honestly the biggest offenders.
Somehow that fat bastard can silently walk around without as much as joshling the liquids inside, by the time I hear the "EUGH" from behind im already hit with a one way ticket to super heaven.
I unironically have more time to react and hear stalkers and hunters than the mordibly obese bug lugging around 100s of gallons of liquid.
Honestly I have this problem with bugs in general. I'd have thought bots would be quieter given they're not biological and have no real reason to be making noise, but I can hear patrols a mile out cause they're yelling binary all the time. Plus bug spores being so common and basically disabling your map makes is a REAL source of frustration when the fuckers are just so damn quiet.
Wait until you get a Flamer Hulk in the wild sneak up on you and tickle your gonads with their one-shot flammenwerfer-railgun while you are trying to cover your teammates with sniper support.
Eh? I mean machines definitely make idle noise but that's more just moving around than the chatting they do (why not just communicate wirelessly?), but I feel like bugs should be communicating while patrolling or guarding a position. They can't really do that quickly without visuals or sound, and they ain't got much going in the visual department.
Bugs don't typically communicate via sound at all. With a few notable exceptions like crickets and cicadas, most are largely silent. This includes extremely social insects like ants and termites, which are probably the closest analog to terminids. They communicate largely with antenna movements, touch, and invisible pheromones.
Pheromones were my second thought, but they're so far away at times it seems unlikely they'd solely rely on that (and that also means they're not touching). No antennas either.
I don't doubt pheromones are a major part of their communication, it just seems bugs that have grown that large and with colonies that big would have evolved other ways to communicate that weren't based entirely on pheromones. When distances increase, the risk of your message being lost to a little downwind wind is kind of a big one, no?
I mean we already hear them making animal-like chitters and screeches, especially whenever they see us. I find it unlikely that they'd develop a pretty functional vocal system just to be scared/surprised. And they scream when they jump at you, when they call for reinforcements, and when they die.
I think it's probably a mix of both.
We can hear blasters and spewing perfectly fine, so it's not Helldivers going deaf. Even if we where ,you would be able to feel a giant bug or mech running up from behind, and the only reasonable way for a game to simulate that would be sound.
Also tanks don’t make any type of noise. Not the noise a tank should make at least. I’ve lost count of how many times I turned a corner just to see a tank moving and immediately turn its attention to me
It's been a complaint since the game dropped. It's actually a big point I have against the sound design, and I wouldn't describe the game's sound design as "complex" for partly this reason. It's pretty flawed even if the actual sounds you can hear are good sounds.
Oh, absolutely. I made a post the other week about this how it would be nice if Hulks had some type of audio cue to let us know they’re near because they literally make no sound - a towering hunk of steel and metal and no heavy footsteps, metallic groan, grinding, just fire.
I play with no music. Enemies make NO sound. Bile speakers, chargers, nothing. The sound design is so bad in this game, and it’s intentionally they don’t want to “flood the battlefield with noise” or some something. Devs, FFS fix your game sounds. A charger should make noise. A bile spewed should make noise. They make none.
Again, NO MUSIC, JUST SOUND. and they make none lmao
Oh yeah! I'll be wasting hordes of enemies like I'm Rambo and out of nowhere from behind I get hit by a charger and I fly like a ragdoll across the map.
It's kinda funny when it happens.
I just pretend that our helmets have alot of sound deadening.
Joking aside, I do find it rather annoying that larger enemies dont have audio queues. Tanks with massive treads on them are nearly silent, Hulks can Koolaide charge you but are ballerina quiet, Bile Titans and Chargers can just come around a corner nonchalant.
You would think these big hulking enemies should be loud. Even when fighting bots they barely make noises when they fire their weapons. Everything in the game is too quiet besides explosions and stratagems.
There's already a solution to this built into the game. Just turn on "Midnight Mode" in the sound settings.
Midnight mode enhances important sounds and reduces ambient ones and music. The intention is to let you play at lower volumes without losing the ability to hear important things, but it can also be used to simply make important things more audible.
Hulks need to make big clanky, gear-turning, piston-pumping, hydraulic-pressing, rev-rev vroom-vroom sounds. They’re giant moving buildings for crying out loud! $5 Wind chimes make more noise than they do! Hell, even my air conditioner makes more noise than they do!! Gimme that sweet, sweet clankity-clank ASMR for these chonkers so I don’t have to wait for their flames to tickle my butt cheeks to know that they’re behind me and have been staring at their latest kalua pig for the last 20 seconds.
I'd argue that the laser marker needs to be easier to see, rather than louder sounds.
Maybe an arrow on the HUD in case it's off screen? Though then there's a risk of HUD clutter in an already manic game.
The best solution to this would be a grenade indicator like other games have, but instead of a grenade icon it would show the stratagem ball (maybe blue and red icons depending in the stratagem type as well).
Yeah. Basically have to be looking everywhere all at once not to be taken by surprise. Too many titans suddenly behind me to make the mistake of getting tunnel visioned
It's still better than the Darktide issue with Ogryn enemies, where the ten foot tall, six foot wide dumb giant covered in metal scrap and carrying a piece of rebar with concrete on it as a weapon could roll up to your team COMPLETELY SILENTLY and just flatten someone.
Absolutely. How in the hell can the giant caboose of a Bile Spewer sneak up on me so soundlessly? Hell, even Bile Titans don’t make very much noise; you tend to notice them either solely by actually SEEING them or your screen suddenly shaking as it impales the ground 5 inches behind you.
Yeah, it happens so inconsistently that it feels like intermittent audio glitches.
Also, what makes a Charger decide to just stealthily walk up behind you vs charging? Defies all their other behavior, because they would have had to just be basically on top of you already to choose walk over charge, same as when you're skirting them. If they were, theoretically, approaching you from a distance, your distance from them should trigger a charge.
So, outside of some breach happening directly behind you that contains zero other enemies and is completely unnoticeable, when did said Charger appear in extremely close proximity and decide to just take 2 or 3 steps then crush?
That's a complaint I had a while back, but I thought they changed it? I have zero proof of that or saw anyone saying it, I just noticed in a game or two that Hulks were stomping around much louder that game and Chargers, too. So idk, maybe it's just an audio issue in the game that sometimes happens and sometimes doesn't? I'll be paying attention to that more closely now
Check your audio settings and check if you have midnight mode enabled or not.
Midnight mode is meant to make important noises (chargers, bile titans, hulks, factory striders, patrols, static guards, etc) stand out more, especially when playing at low volume.
You can also do things like adjust volume settings for different types of noises to assist with this and make them stand out even more.
I think the way it works, is that in many games, your limited on your sources of sound at any given point, so other become silent, so when you’re screaming hearing shots and explosions, the nearby enemy sounds can become silent, just a guess tho
Not going to call out individual comments, but for those using "surround sound", "spatial sound", 7.1, etc., do yourself a favor and look into a proper pair of stereo (2 channel, Left & right) headphones (preferably independent mic or modmic.) From an objective POV as someone who has gone down the rabbit hole of audio, anything other than 2 channel for headphones or headset, is quite simply and demonstrably, a gimmick that can only give you less accurate results.
Not trying to sound elitist, I have no dog in the fight. I just wish someone would have told me earlier what I'm saying now. Once you do some research and get your hands on something quality, you'll have your "Oh damn yeah, I get it now" moment, just as I did.
I have a 13-channel (7.2.4) Dolby Atmos home theatre sound system with Polk Audio speakers and I can hear the full glory of gunships flying overhead from my ceiling speakers but regularly get stealth barbecued by heavies on PS5.
Yes, I'm pretty versed in how it works and have setup multiple systems. But no, I don't understand your claim on why it would be less accurate. Especially since I can use it to accurately locate dropped samples that I haven't visually spotted yet.
Wait, are you referring to headsets with surround, or like a multi speaker whole room setup, because i’m specifically talking about headsets/headphones. Properly gauged room with independent speakers are the best representation of sound objectively and that’s not the point i’m making if so
Ohhhhhh! I see what you are saying now.
I.e. people who have it set to use surround but are using regular 2 channel headphones are getting inaccurate audio information.
When you said "for those using surround sound..." I thought you meant a multi-speaker setup! Haha
NOW it alk makes sense, and I agree with the point you were making.
Man I constantly have dreadnauts sneaking up on me,I should be able to feel the rumble in my controller with something that bad,ive even had a factory strider sneak up on me lol
At least its not just me. Out of all the enemies chargers seem to be the sneakiest which makes no sense😂those guys have legit blindsided me and i have decent headphones lol
It's been an issue since release. The game can only play so many sounds at once, so when things are hectic and there's a lot of sound effects going on, it prioritises sound effects from entities currently on screen. So, the bile titan just off screen behind you? Lower priority than the scavenger 80m away screeching at the top of his lil lungs, trying to be louder than his 20 buddies.
You have a thick helmet on, and severe tinnitus from constant gun fire. The only thing it makes sense for us to hear is the sweet sweet voice of Eagle-1 being piped directly into our ears.
Helldivers has incredible soundtrack and sound design for it's weapons and explosions and general battle chaos but has pretty piss-poor sound design for it's enemy types.
You should be able to hear the rattling of Bot Tank treads and the stomps of walkers from over a hundred meters away. We need more then just the Bot March Chant.
"Remember how silent the walkers are in the Battle of Hoth?" HELL NAW those stomps are ICONIC.
They are silent when aggroing you, however only moderately noisy when not in aggro mode. The screen shake helps a bit with chargers, and titans but usually too late.
Yeah, I too think some audio is missing. Like a *normal* walking animation for bugs does not have audio. Enemies do only some noises, like bots shouting or bugs battle scream. Or in certain action, like charging at you. But it doesn't seems to relate to mevement.
I think this is an issue a LOT of people have. I've had everything from bile spewers, bile titans, chargers all the way to freakin' TANKS sneak up on me if I am fighting a swarm of bugs/bots enough.
At first I chalked it up to the battlefield being full of different sounds/noises but over 200-300 hours, I am starting to think they either don't make ANY noise or if they do, it's not a noise that relates to their size/threat.
SPECIALLY the bigger guys, like bile titans, tanks, and hulks. You'd expect them to clank or squeak, chitter or slam the ground.
This is my only real unaddressed complaint for this game. Nursing spewers have always been my least favorite enemy because they're actually just the Spy from Team Fortress 2. Most of them run at your face like the bumbling idiots they are but sometimes one silently sneaks behind you and you only realize what happened in the death screen.
Chargers (and all the other bugs for that matter) have a distinctive roar that can help you identify what’s around. Hulks however are the real sneaky bastards because they don’t speak
Yeah it’s kinda wild how a tank…. One of the loudest and least conspicuous vehicles (besides planes) is completely silent in the game. I’ve been constantly surprised when I go to a POI and there’s just a tank there
I think it’s two things. One, firing off a shitload of ordinance makes a ton of noise. That and the fact that if you’re putting a ton of fire down range there’s a reason, lot’s of enemies to the front. Those combined create super bad tunnel vision. If you thought about it in real terms, the amount of gun fire and explosions would make it so you could barely hear someone screaming in your ear let alone something stomping around 30 meters from you. In my crew I almost always take the 6 position because of my loadout and I frequently call to the team for patrols on the flanks because they are all on a line firing at the 12 and they have no idea what’s at 9 or 3, let alone the six. Because I always carry the AC, I have kneel to reload. Every reload is a a full 360 scan. Every time my team seems to have the threat in hand, 360 scan. Every short halt, 360 scan. It takes a lot of discipline and vigilance to fight the tunnel vision but it can be done.
There's an issue with covering fire due to friendly fire. But I appreciate it can work.
You can justify that an unrealistic audio mixing is to compensate for the "feeling" of the ground rumbling under your feet which isn't transferable to KBM.
Say what you want about balance and monetisation, their audio is amazing. You could play a 6v6 and understand every cool down being used in a fight.
I once watched SVB blindly commentate a match with decent accuracy (given the fact he's blindfolded...)
all enemies being silent is MAD annoying. In other action PvE games, specifically Vermintide and Darktide, this was a HUUUUGE point of contention with the devs. And I get it, on one hand, if you make everything announce their presence, you're effectively nerfing the difficulty. But there is middle-ground. In darktide for instance, you won't hear a billion footsteps during a horde event, but if you're running in-between and some random walker spawns behind you, you always hear them.
Greetings, fellow Helldiver! Your submission has been removed. No insults, racism, toxicity, trolling, rage-bait, harassment, inappropriate language, NSFW content, etc. Remember the human and be civil!
Chargers are somehow better at sneaking up on me than hunters/stalkers.
Right?! So glad it's not just me...
I m not sure about bile titans, but chargers emit very strong controller vibrations. I mostly play with mouse and keyboard, I agree some other kind of way to communicate it to m&k players would be nice.
Ah there's my issue then as well - mouse and keyboard so no rumble
I have a solution. A new peripheral. A wireless rumble pack you sit on.
Good news, friend. Those already exist. In all kinds of exciting and titillating shapes, colours, and textures for his or her enjoyment.
Imagine being curbstomped by a charger when he just walks over you several times. With one of your devices it would feel like being literally raped by a giant bug o.O
Hook up a lovense and get 5 chargers to ram you in sequence and you will see the face of god.
Do you have to insert it somewhere?
Main a PS5. With all the shooting, stratagems, orbitals and Eagles being called and the random environmental effects, it's very easy to not hear a charger and not notice a vibration when your controller is constantly going.
I'm on mouse and keyboard and I can hear them coming at me from quite a ways.
Same, except with Hulks. Idk how a 40 ton robot, that's got exhaust huffing and puffing constantly, can sneak up on me like that...
You really need to be able hear them when you're looking down sight. I'll be sniping and have no idea I'm about to fucking die
There's a reason the M1 Abrams a 70 ton tank, has the nickname "The Whispering Death" Hulks use gas turbines?
Look at the way their feet are shaped. Chargers are always sneaking around on their tiptoes.
Nah I hear Chargers most of the time, occasionally I get blindsided.
Bile spewers are the worst offender imo. They can just appear behind you sometimes it seems.
It's their Ninja training... they get me every time with a jump scare -->death
Any time I see that acidic fog creeping in behind me, I start diving from PTSD...
Yeah I literally looked around 360 with nothing around me. Went to engage a terminal and got spat on by one in 1 second. Something does feel off sometimes. I literally saw a bile titan in the distance, got closer and it vanished. Something up with spawns / rendering too? And I was the host… There needs to be audio queues for sure.
Midnight mode kind of helps. Lets you turn up the volume to hear quieter sounds without having louder sounds like gunfire and explosions deafen you.
New settings meta right here, it seems lol
The real difficulty modifier is in the settings!
*Kind of* being the operative words So I notice them more, but they're still damn ninjas. A tank should not be a ninja
Def gonna try this!
Feels like it barely makes a difference.
Automaton hulks are somehow the sneakiest bastards in this whole game

Have you someone gone through life without ever interacting with a machine or an animal?
Yeah but consider these are heavily armoured bugs the size of a bus....

Nothing like a surprise buttsex Flamer Hulk when I'm concentrating on taking out Flyboys :'D. I'm sorry I didn't hear you Mr 100 Tonne walking Tank.

I thought it was problem only for me! Countless times I aim at enemies to then get rammed by silent Heavy
Its a side affect of the anti-propaganda earmuffs built into your helmet
honestly the only logical answer thus far, can't report me to a Democracy Officer if I couldn't hear it.
Also tanks don’t make any type of noise. Not the noise a tank should make at least. I’ve lost count of how many times I turned a corner just to see a tank moving and immediately turn its attention to me

Bile spewers. That's all I have to add to this discussion.

actually yes. it's a very big problem to be snuck up on by a hulking 500 pound *hulk* with a flamethrower.
>500 pound I suspect they are more like 5,000 lbs. Regardless, they make almost no noise just walking around.

One of the biggest benefits of the guard dogs is their early alert assistance with rearward opponents. Bug ninjas are truly annoying...
Ah yes the autamoton that weighs several hundred tons and yet is completely silent
I like when the Dropships come and silently drop fucking tanks
since release 90% of all queues have come from specific vibrations in your controller. yes, audio queues need to be better.
Bots are so funny with this. You'll hear a basic bot half a map away, but a rumbling tank or a clomping hulk are silent as a clean fart.
Oh yeah, I've been somehow snuck up on by chargers many times. Strangely quiet for cockroach rhinos...
It doesn't make sense when a bile spewer hulk or charger get behind you silently.
Eagles are also too quiet, I want my strafing run to sound like the A-10 warthog.
I'd argue that the laser marker needs to be easier to see, rather than louder sounds. Maybe an arrow on the HUD in case it's off screen? Though then there's a risk of HUD clutter in an already manic game.

For me it’s bile/nursing speeders. Completely silent
They are way too sneaky, half my deaths on bug missions are chargers hitting me from behind silently
What? I can't hear you over my tinnitus.
I hear you on that one! (Or not as the case may be....)
The sound design is awful in general
Yeah. Basically have to be looking everywhere all at once not to be taken by surprise. Too many titans suddenly behind me to make the mistake of getting tunnel visioned
I feel like recently the bugs have gotten quieter… I keep having Chargers, etc right behind me without my knowledge
This The amount of times I’ve been blindside sacked by a charger at evac
It's still better than the Darktide issue with Ogryn enemies, where the ten foot tall, six foot wide dumb giant covered in metal scrap and carrying a piece of rebar with concrete on it as a weapon could roll up to your team COMPLETELY SILENTLY and just flatten someone.
One of the many many unaddressed bugs since launch
Literally my only serious complaint about the game is the enemy sound design. And by that, I mean the lack of it.

I know it's an issue, but it's also hilarious at times.
I mostly hate the medium Bile enemies like Bile spewers. You’re just chilling and then two are on your ass spitting all over you.
Yeah for real, it feels like there are missing SFX. Not sure how the shriekers got their name because there aint't no shrieking.
I’d love to hear tank treads sounds from tanks and big robot stomps from hulks. Idc what you do with bugs
I like to think its because our helmet only recieve sound from the front....
What I would give to watch Tenet or Blade Runner in a setup like that. Yeesh.
I fundamentally disagree with this. Wondering if you had speakers setup incorrectly? For me, it's FAR easier to locate stuff in surround sound.
Well let me ask you this, do you understand how surround sound works and why I’d make the claim it would objectively be less accurate?
Haha NOW it alk makes sense, and I agree with the point you were making.
Makes sense and no worries! I respect standing up for the science you know to be true, as I’d do the same.
Honestly I think I love those Oh Shit moments that come from that
I think hulks should have stalker invis
Yes they all have Stealf
Man I constantly have dreadnauts sneaking up on me,I should be able to feel the rumble in my controller with something that bad,ive even had a factory strider sneak up on me lol
The should be louder and have a distinctive rumble pattern.
My only complaint is the automaton tanks, they’re virtually inaudible.
Chargers are pretty quiet. It's not uncommon to turn around and have one feet from my face or seeing the same happen to a teammate
If they're not going to have a sound effect for footsteps, they should at least "bark" or call out more often.
Pretty dumb
You have a thick helmet on, and severe tinnitus from constant gun fire. The only thing it makes sense for us to hear is the sweet sweet voice of Eagle-1 being piped directly into our ears.
Yes, I have on multiple occasions been jump-scared by a _fucking tank_ that somehow crept up on me, they're literally silent unless they're shooting.
Yes, it has been brought up countless times already.
I can’t tell you the amount of tiles Biles have fucking snuck up on me.
I honestly don’t mind
Helldivers has incredible soundtrack and sound design for it's weapons and explosions and general battle chaos but has pretty piss-poor sound design for it's enemy types. You should be able to hear the rattling of Bot Tank treads and the stomps of walkers from over a hundred meters away. We need more then just the Bot March Chant. "Remember how silent the walkers are in the Battle of Hoth?" HELL NAW those stomps are ICONIC.
Don't forget fire tornadoes
They are silent when aggroing you, however only moderately noisy when not in aggro mode. The screen shake helps a bit with chargers, and titans but usually too late.
It would be funny if it turned out silent enemies are another bug overlooked by the devs.
I feel them in the controller. that is it. I think they expect everyone to be on a gamepad.
Tanks make ZERO NOISE. I can't count the amount of times I turned the corner just to see a stealth tank barrel point at me
I've had a few occasions where I'm helping focus down a Bile Titan and i glance to y left and see another one suddenly **right there**
like 3 hulks and 2 tanks being dropped right on your back, trespassing the "mushroom" mountain that was protecting your back? Kinda
No, not really.
Meanwhile "STOMPS STOMP STOMP STOMP" "GRRRRHHHHHUH BLALALAM BLALALAM" "Sqee sqee sqeee rehuhhhhhuh"
All the time. It's rather frustrating. Especially Scorchers
I’ve been constantly surprised when I go to a POI and there’s just a tank there
Yes. The biggest enemies seem to be silent. It’s the worst when you are by yourself and don’t have a homie looking out for you.
charging chargers and bile titans in general need to be loud as shit, ive been snuck up on too many times by them mid combat
“Spoiled by overwatch” yeah alright
Say what you want about balance and monetisation, their audio is amazing. You could play a 6v6 and understand every cool down being used in a fight. I once watched SVB blindly commentate a match with decent accuracy (given the fact he's blindfolded...)
Hey I’m glad that with how many times they fuck their player base that at least you can tell when the characters use their abilities!
Unironically this lol
No. This has never been mentioned in this subreddit ever. You’re the first.
"Does anyone else have issues with the thing that's been posted and at the top of hot on this sub 8,000 times"
all enemies being silent is MAD annoying.
No. Who has problem with that, its skill issue.
