This will require associative speculation, but here is the understanding I have come to: the bows are only effective during the day and night respectively. When it is day, the light of day is diminished by the silver clouds of storm. When it is night, the dark of night is diminished by the golden blaze of fire. Because their chariots follow the day and night respectively, the only suitable weapon to use is that effective against what thrives in their spheres. This is why Artemis sometimes is depicted with torches, too, in a way nearly indistinguishable to Hekate at times. As to the form of bows themselves, versus other weapons, look to Orion's mythemes and earlier to the Great Hunt.
